Regarding Herbie’s comment “In some areas, fire goes on every EMS run,” I agree with JakeEMTP – I realize that only some services do this, but what a waste of resources, and this sounds very much like responding to justify existence.
How many calls does a medic really need backup on? How many calls do you go on where you truly need another set of hands other than your partner? Not very many – for those few calls, fine, call for backup…. But for the rest, it is a waste of resources. A good medic will also be able to tell pretty quickly if they need backup, whether that is to drive, lift a heavy patient, or other needs, and will call quickly.
Dust, regarding your comment “they will NOT -- EVER -- drive my ambulance. In the back, they endanger the patient's life. I can accept that. Behind the wheel, they endanger MY life. Unacceptable,” although given in the absolute, does make sense. I wouldn’t say “never” but you are right – at least having them in the back, you can control their actions, where if they are behind the wheel, you can’t.
I like the fire crews that I work with, but I try not to let them drive – they don’t know my unit, just as I don’t know theirs. The one and only time I had a firefighter drive in the last year, they hit a car…. Caused me nothing but paperwork… I learned my lesson…
