  1. I think that driving with lights and sirens needs to be done away with. Why are we putting ourselvers, our partner, and the community we work in at higher risk just because someone else called 911??? Most of the time when we get there, it really wasn't needed to run with lights and sirens and was only done because it's in policy. In my company, even if you are running code3, med3 whatever each area calls it, we STILL have to stop at stop signs, red lights, and all intersections. What time is really being saved??? It is an unnecessary risk if you ask me. We already have enough responsibilities and liability, why add more?

  2. Regarding Herbie’s comment “In some areas, fire goes on every EMS run,” I agree with JakeEMTP – I realize that only some services do this, but what a waste of resources, and this sounds very much like responding to justify existence. How many calls does a medic really need backup on? How many calls do you go on where you truly need another set of hands other than your partner? Not very many – for those few calls, fine, call for backup…. But for the rest, it is a waste of resources. A good medic will also be able to tell pretty quickly if they need backup, whether that is to drive, lift a heavy patient, or other needs, and will call quickly. Dust, regarding your comment “they will NOT -- EVER -- drive my ambulance. In the back, they endanger the patient's life. I can accept that. Behind the wheel, they endanger MY life. Unacceptable,” although given in the absolute, does make sense. I wouldn’t say “never” but you are right – at least having them in the back, you can control their actions, where if they are behind the wheel, you can’t. I like the fire crews that I work with, but I try not to let them drive – they don’t know my unit, just as I don’t know theirs. The one and only time I had a firefighter drive in the last year, they hit a car…. Caused me nothing but paperwork… I learned my lesson…

  6. When someone sneezed, I offered a box of Kleenex, and said, "Tissue?" She responded, "Tissue? I don't even know you!" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A year ago, I was in a Texas bar, when a drunk cowboy pulled his revolver, and shot a dog in the foot. At the same bar a year later, the door suddenly slammed open, and the same dog limped back into the room. He pulled his own revolver, and spoke to the room in general, "I'm looking for the man that shot my paw!"(Pa) (Sounds a bit better if read sounding like Clint Eastwood.)

  8. Well this has been fun it started with a discussion on the king airway but because a basic brought it that point fell out to the old traditional paramedics rule basics drool argument. but I would still like to know dust do you think the king is a good device. Also there was some pending problems with the king airway and the FDA, how did that come out. As far as the age old basic verse paramedic argument if we throw money out of the equation and did strictly what was best for the patient we would have a ER doc and nurse plus a basic for a driver on ever call in every state but this is the real world know what?

  9. So often people are tried by the media and it takes weeks for the truth to come out and then it is usually under reportered. If you want positive media coverage you need to were tights and a cape, go topless or defame the current regime. Other wise you could start the pope's heart with your radio battery and still get arrested for assault.
