  1. Follow-up story - the "Mexican-American" (not only do I despise hyphenated titles, it is debatable how many are legally Americans at all) students staged a protest at City Hall. American Flag Clothing Sparks New Protest In my humble opinion, whether the students meant to make a statement or not (which I'm sure they did, as I would have), this did not, and would not have, become an "incendiary" incident until the administrators made it one by directing attention to it, by their actions, telling the students that these boys had (1) done something wrong, and (2) that the Mexican's should be offended. They guaranteed that it would become an issue! So guess what? Now they have a huge, national controversy on and have incited racial tension in their city and school. Congratulations! Oh, by the way, Dwayne? I love that Roosevelt speech! One of the first things that came to mind when I read the article. edited for formatting Multiculturalism: Respecting all cultures except your own. The backbone of our educational system right there.

  2. It breaks my heart to think that anyone would think that wearing, waving, exhibiting an American flag anywhere, at any time in the United States would be considered an instigation for violence. If wearing them was to stir up some shit then those that would be 'stirred' should then revoke their own rights to the privileges that they enjoy here and move to a place where they don't find the national flag offensive. I acknowledge americans. I care not one whit of their color, sexuality, national origin, social status, religion. I will be happy to help feed you, to educate your children, to carry you if need be, until you find your way, but don't ever, ever ask me to address you as African American, or Chinese American, or Polish American. We stand together here, as one people of many backgrounds. If it's not sufficient for you to be American, so be it, you should feel free to move on. But if you commit, I will stand besides you, no matter what, American with American. I love the speech below.. (partial) 'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' Theodore Roosevelt 1907 God bless you all, but if you choose to be offended by a symbol of the country that supports you, that fields the military that protects you, that feeds you when you're poor...then I'm afraid I have no respect nor patience for your hypocrisy. I would have worn my flag t-shirt right to the hospital, along with all of those that tried to remove it from me. Dwayne

  3. Hello, 1. BGL = 545 mg/dl (30 mmol so so I think) Dose she take insulin or is her DM controlled with medications? - Voided twice in last hour - Laying on a urine stain - Looks like DKA or maybe Hyperosmolar Syndrome 2. Renal - On the floor 24 hours or so - Weak left arm - Rhabdomyolysis could be a possibility as well 3. CVA - HTN+++ - Droop and left arm deficit - Million dollar question.....is it old or new?? - Do we see any aid of daily living to help her with her weak arm? That would make me lean towards an old CVA - Good LOC.... Again, may be an old CVA...not sure I like Kiwimedic idea...a 12-lead. Who knows what this lady K is. Maybe, get the friend to help you out. She may be able to get her to go to the ED. How safe is this lady? Once off the floor can she actually move around and take care of herself? Also, can the friend give more information about the patient? (i.e. the arm and droop) Besides, what ED wouldn't want a 375lbs women in poor health?? Easy to fix and easy to discharge...... =) Cheers...

  4. "With due regard to safety and traffic"... There you have it in a nutshell. After 36 years of operating Ambulances, Fire Apparatus and Patrol Cars, I've seen so many imbeciles behind the wheel (both civilian and official imbeciles) it makes me want to heave. Yes, we have a duty to respond, but those "seconds saved" can kill. I hammer into the heads of every member of my Department that driving like the hammers of hell does no good at all. We serve no one by becoming another response. Yes, accidents happen. Yes, many, if not most are preventable. No one goes to work thinking "I'll kill or maim someone today". Yet, some seem hell bent on just that by their actions behind the wheel. We need to police our own and get the bad operators out of the seat. As Chief Engineer, that's one of my main jobs. Once the Academy says they're qualified, then they have to pass my tests... And the members know that I keep an eye on all responses by our apparatus. I've worked with departments and companies that don't push operator safety at all. I'm very happy that my Chief requires it. The last thing I want to do is go to an LODD funeral. Especially one of our own making. I'm not going to cast aspersions on the Department involved in this accident as I don't have all the information needed to make an informed decision as to what happened. And it doesn't matter if it's professional or volunteer, municipal or private. Apparently, the investigating agency put the blame on the cyclist. But the operator of that ambulance has to live with the fact that someone is dead and he had a part in that person dying. Would you want that monkey on your back? I sure as hell wouldn't...

  6. A few of us were discussing this, and I wanted some opinions. I work in a very rural setting, minimum transport time is 60-80 minutes to an ER. Sometimes, you can't get an extra hand onboard during bad calls. So....if you're working an arrest alone, and you're just to tired to do more compressions, is pacing a feasability? Isn't it still going to circulate, providing you get capture?
