  1. Mario, It does appear that you do need to study more. I agree with Siff, that in several conversations with you in chat, the depth of your knowledge needs some work. That having been said, you did comment that so far, only 8 of your classmates have passed the exam so far. There are bad programs, and bad instructors, and despite that, some students will still always excel. Even with a poor instructor, it is still up to the student to ensure that all the material is getting covered, and that you understand the material. EMS classes are not spoon-fed classes. There is a lot of homework, and outside research to be done. As Siff said, it is easy to recite from a book. Knowing the WHY of things is the hard part, and I suspect that is the part that you have difficulty with. If you know why certain things happen (for example, knowing what vital signs are when a person is in shock is not as useful as knowing WHY those vital signs are what they are) it will be much easier for you to be able to recognise these items in a question on an exam, in a scenario, or when you get to the street. You failed your first NREMT attempt – it is not the end of the world. You have two choices. You can give up, or you can really put your mind to it, study hard, and try again. Write out your notes in detail. Work through your text, and ensure that if there are chapter objectives for each chapter, that you can answer all the objectives. If there are review questions in each chapter, do those. Take advantage of sites like www.emtb.com and use the reviews there. Passing an EMS exam shouldn’t be easy… we carry a lot of responsibility. Do you want the person who barely passed their course to work on you or your family? Probably not. You want the one who excelled in their class – it is up to you to be that person – be the one who excels, and can give the best care to someone else’s family member.

  2. With idol sitting and not being able to work while you are recuperating, you should be mindful of a possibility of some depression as well. They never tell a person that, but a person that is otherwise always busy and always working can become very depressed in a short amount of time not being able to work. IMHO, depression is much more a possibility in these cases than addiction. Keep cheerful, it's only a few weeks of much needed rest. Harass some friends, start a new hobby, torture your significant other with sarcasm and practical jokes, whatever it takes to keep laughing. Hope you're better soon.

  3. My class is over, I took my final on Tuesday. I worked my butt off in that class, and enjoyed every minute of it. I got my score today, and I passed the class with an A, and my score is 101%! I am so proud of what I did, and so thankful to those of you who pushed of the importance of this class. Reading things on here, hearing EMTs and Medics talk about patients, or scenarios used to be totally confusing to me. While most still is, I finally feel I have an better understanding as to why or how when it comes to the human body and treatments. I can not tell you how many times I read something, or during lecture that something would 'click' and made sense as far as illnesses or injuries etc. It makes me feel more confident knowing this will help me in my EMT class, and be a refresher for my medic classes. I am enrolled for summer classes to take care of my math and English. I will have a 12 unit semester this fall, and will take my EMT class in January. With that class under me, I will only have 5 or so units to complete my Assoc. in Science to transfer over to CC SF when I can join the Paramedic program. I hope to pass the EMT class, become certified, work, and finish off the 5 remaining units. Then within the year, or as soon as the program opens up for enrollment in 2011, I can submit my packet, and hope to be one the ones chosen. Again, THANK YOU. I could not be more grateful.

  4. Well, I admit I am wrong. I viewed this video on my desktop and could have sworn to what I saw. Looked at it on the laptop and can obviously see the pants. My bad.

  5. Weezers and seizers was a term of endearment I learned from one of the NICU attendings at one of the hospital where I work. We have a 67 bed, Level III NICU that is the only one in western Michigan and the upper penninsula so we do know a few things about premies. As for transport, we have our own helicopter service which is staffed by doctors and nurses. We do not have a ground transport service but have a private service such as AMR pick up the team. I, personally, was never a paramedic, only an EMT and I admit I had a cowboy tendency when I was an EMT. It scares me now, knowing how much I didn't know. As for issue of providing links, when you post a statistic to further your argument, it is up to you to provide a source, regardless of how many people do or do not look at it. I agree that it is foolish to keep going back and forth on this, so let's agree to end it here. As for the JEMS link, I did not go to it. I, personally, do not look at much from JEMS. As for your other links in other posts, I have looked and them many times and have found them to be helpful and educational. Just because someone may not comment on a link you post does not mean they are not being looked at. Looking at your reputation, people obviously find your posts informative. I would encourage you to continue providing links. It only helps to prove that there may be hope for bringing education and not just training to EMS. The onus of the transport is on the sending physician. The receiving physician has not evaluated the pt and can only base their decisions on what the sending physician says. I think the Florida lawmakers response to this incident is an uninformed kneejerk response (would you expect anything less from politicians). There are times when waiting for a fully staffed, more equipped ambulance to arrive may be detrimental to the patient. These situations are judgement calls and should not be legislated. This is where the art of medicine comes from. Some times judgement is wrong, there is no way to avoid that, including trying to legislate it away. Sometimes, there is nothing you can do to change the outcome. Let's say this kid had a fully staffed NICU transport, would the outcome have been different? There is no way to say but it is very possible. As I said before, how do we know this kids was not oxygen deprived while mom was laboring in the hospital waiting for the transfer. Would waiting another hour for a fully staffed unit to come have made the situation worse? As a sending physician, when I call for an ambulance I expect that the paramedic that takes my pt has met the qualifications to be a paramedic (although I do keep in mind that the guy who graduates last in his class is still called a paramedic).

  6. I have a cute little story.... You know how you kind of get this feel for patients, and you know the ones you can joke with, and when you can, etc? Well, we had this lady once, a nice lady, but really down to earth and had a neat sense of humor, but she kept apologizing for calling us. I forget what her complaint was, but since she really did feel bad for calling us, we're trying to get her to laugh about it. We also had a student riding with us, and he was practicing his IV skills, so he did all the IV's. As he prepared to obtain access, he said to her, "OK, you're going to feel a little prick". So my partner goes: "He says that to all his girlfriends!" Our patient just completely cracked up laughing!
