YOU make arguments without backing them up with statistics or references (oh, I correct myself - you made 1 reference that you backed up with a link). YOU ignore the original posts so that you can get on your soapbox about race issues. Every one of your arguments in this thread has been race related, and have no bearing on the original article posted. Even when you were asked to keep your posts related to the original thread, you refused. YOU are every bit as racist as you accuse others of being, by the way you treat others here on these boards. YOU throw the first stone every time, and accuse others of racist behaviors without proof. YOU accuse people in these forums of being racist, but whenever someone presents an alternative view, you scream even harder that others are racist. You demand respect when you do not give the same, and wonder why you are not respected. It has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with your own actions. You want to start a thread on race, do it, but quit derailing other threads for your own agenda.

You know, it seems like the new membership, or at least the posting membership goes through waves.. Posts will be many, smart, confident, committed to learning! Life is good all around... And then things kind of peter out a bit, get slower, people that want to learn have a hard time getting others to respond... Then we'll have the wave of "I juSt wnt a P;ace to chill dood, & not be jugdged!!" But sometimes, like now I believe, we get a wave of new posters, younger posters, and those that have been here a bit but have just begun to post for whatever reason, and the board kind of comes alive! New blood, new questions, young people that don't need anyone to tell them to check their spelling and grammar before posting, folks that just want to participate, get better, and try and make everyone else better with them. I really, really love these times! I've posted this here, as I believe that this is where it belongs. I mostly wanted to say thanks! to our new members, or those not used to posting. Wow I missed this one but here is my 2 cents worth. Yes I am canadian and I live in a community that has a high racisum rate white and Haida. For one thing I do not ever tolerate racisum from the people I work with, play with or have raised. My 3 children have gone to school here from kindergarden to graduation. So you know I have 2 white children and one who is a status indian. Through out the school years my boys would complain about those dam indians (even the indian did this) So this is what I told them "If you dont like someone because they are an as shole then don't like them because they are an as shole not because they are black, green or purple. Crotchity you really should stop poking the bear on the racisum it is not very becomming of you. The reason that racisum hasn't gone away for you is because you havn't let it, and until YOU let it go it will eat you up and spit you out in one big greeny. I have to say that I AM impressed with the majority of the new faces around the place! I've always figured that learning is a 'two way street', the pups can learn from us 'old dogs' and we in turn can always learn something from the pups. I have to give credit to the pups that were willing to brave the teeth of the beast so to speak, by jumping right in and letting us know they were in the yard. It gives us time to size them up and evaluate them. I like that there are some really 'solid questions' coming out of the new crop, and that they're appreciative of the wisdom us 'old timers' have to offer. Somebody just stop me if I start calling new members of the EMT City as "young whippersnappers!" (LOL) It is a 2 way street, here. Long-timers like me can sometimes show the older, tried and true ways to the newjacks, while they might be able to show us the newest change in a protocol, or even protocols never experienced by us, as both BLS and ALS skill sets and requirements are increased.

Agreed Dwayne. I'd stopped posting a lot recently for many reasons: It had started getting really slow around here, repetitive topics thriving while good ones flounder, but mainly I was trying (and failing) to do more non-work related things on my time off. But, in the last bit as it's picked up I've been findings myself drawn right back in and enjoying it.

It depends on whether you are profit or non-profit. If money is no object just send ALS on everything, and do not run BLS units (rationale being, why have a limited resource, versus an ambulance that can respond to every call imaginable). If you are profit driven (which I doubt, since no one in your organization understands billing, that tells me that it isnt important), then you need to use the proper resource, as payment is determined by Medicare Policies (almost all private insurance and Medicaid base their payment schedule on Medicare's). Therefore you can send 3 medics on ever call, but if it is a BLS call, you will only get reimbursed at the BLS rate; conversely if you send a BLS crew on an ALS "rated" call, you will not get the higher reimbursement rate. Not going into a potentially dangerous situation (be it in 'socioeconomic depressed sections of town or whether in affluent sections of town) isn't 'racist' it's called COMMON SENSE. In order to be considered 'racist' by any standards, one would have to compromise the level of care rendered based on race, color, creed, religion, gender or socio-economic criteria. We are not talking about oroviding 'compromised care' for the poor, black, white, purple, green or any other color. Nor are we talking about giving enhanced care to the affluent (again regardless of color). As far as your example (the wrecked flaming vehicle in the front yard), if we cannot get near the scene due to hazardous conditions, I don't see where there is anything we can do. Charging blindly into a situation without assessing the risks or a known unsafe scene is foolhardy at best. For the Councilman to even suggest it makes it clear that we are only 'public servants' and our safety means NOTHING to him. Remember, "the rescuer who needs to be rescued is of no use to anyone, and creates a drain on otherwise limited resources!". You stated that our job is hazardous to begin with. To not take steps to attempt to mitigate the hazards is insane. You're so quick to play the 'race card' in every thread you post to, that you seem to forget that not everybody lives or works in Suburbia, USA and lives next door to Ward and June Cleaver. There are some of us that have worked in some of the roughest neighborhoods in the most dangerous cities in the United States (based on FBI crime statistics). Until you can tell me that you've worked and lived in those areas, don't you DARE call ME a 'racist' or even IMPLY that I compromise the care given to ANYONE without concrete facts! Yes, I've worked some of the worst sections of Metro Detroit (which has topped the list of the most dangerous cities in the United States more than once. I have lived in Flint, Michigan; which is currently the fifth most dangerous city in the United States based on the FBI's 2009 Uniform Crime Reporting Program) With the frequency that you stir hell and havoc in this forum, I actually think you live to create strife. This story was NOT about race. It was about responding to unsafe scenes. If you want to start a thread about racism and EMS- be my guest. Just be prepared to back up any claims with proof that EMS refuses to respond to calls because of some racial factor.

And, when I went to the official Jackson, Missippi site (http://www.jacksonms.gov/government/planning/demographics/) it reports the population as 70.6% black and 27.8% white, not the 61.6% black and 29% white that you quoted without a reference source. Agreed – THIS IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE INITIAL POST, PLEASE KEEP WITH THE PROGRAM… You post opinions, and demand that others PROVE their point, and when they do, and provide links and articles to support it, you ignore them. For example, on page 3 of this thread, ERdoc provided a number of examples of ambulance shootings to refuse your comments. You chose to ignore that. That's pretty racist of you crotchity. I've responded to a few trailer parks in my days and have seen plenty of non-white people. So according to you, just because it is a trailer park means that it is inhabited by poor white people. Nope, not too racist. As for this asshat, does he really think that sending unarmed, unprotected, untrained people into a dangerous scene is a good idea? As others have said, instead of needing to treat 1 victim, it's better to treat 3 victims? That makes a lot of sense. The assailant was mad enough to shoot/stab/beat someone, do you really think he will think twice about taking out an EMS crew trying to help the person he was trying to kill? Hospitals go on lock-down or whatever their procedures are when a violence victim comes in because of the possibility of the assailants coming in to finish off the job and anyone that gets in the way. Crotchity, in the original article, at the start of the second paragraph, it states “City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has threatened to reverse the contract American Medical Response has to serve in the area if the company doesn't send its workers into violent crime scenes, even before police arrive.” I think that makes the intent of Councilman Stokes’ comments very clear. As much as you want it to be, since you have brought it up in other threads, this Councilman is not basing his comments on race, and the replies from EMS are not either. It is a question of “is the scene violent? Yes or No.” End of story. Using race as an excuse, or a crutch in situations like this is just that, and excuse or a crutch. The true issue is that this idiot wants EMS to respond prior to police to violent scenes. Race is only an issue when we allow it to be, and instead of looking at the sins of the past, how about looking to the future, and trying to solve problems instead of creating problems where none exist. Let's keep this thread on topic - that this councilman has his head up his *** and needs to be educated about scene safety and the role of EMS.
