  1. Never a good thing to have a negative reputation score which is in excess of your post count.

  2. I said to myself that after being called a rookie (no it was not direct however the inent was there) I would no longer post to this thread. However, I have two more things to say about it and then I agree with Richard I hope this thread is locked. First, I am going to make an assumption and it might come back to haunt me but eh, nothing ventured nothing gained. I would like to take a moment to thank you for not only being someone who set back EMS, but I suspect you set my generation back as a whole. I say MY generation because I don't want to include you as part of it. Some of us especially in this line of work have had to work hard to overcome the stereotypes set upon us by our elders. I for one am fortunate that most members on this forum know that I am not immature (most of the time). They also have watched me grow not only as a professional but also as a human being. Most them including me possibly have more time in rank than you and so for you to call us rookies is not only disrespectful and immature it is a slap in the face. Wait until you have seen a six month old infant die in your arms and then see if it changes your perspective on humor. Second, and in my opinion most important IMHO is the fact that we (the members) are not the only people who read and see these forums members of the public, the general public, see these as well. That is how you have set back the industry and the generation and hurt it the most. Just the other day I was googling something so I could find some contact information to another post. When i typed in my search query the first thing that came up was a thread on another EMS website that I am a member of, you need to remember that you are always in the fishbowl as a member of a public safety group. If you are not sure what a fishbowl is than just ask. So with that in mind I hope that you will learn from your mistakes and hopefully we can watch you grow and learn as so many have watched me and I have watched others grow and learn both professionally and humanely.

  4. A hunter and his friend were sitting in a tall tower stand near Highway 7 early one cold December morning. Suddenly, a huge buck walked out over the corn they had spread in the low shrubs. The buck was magnificent, a once in a lifetime animal. His rack was huge. The hunter's hand shook as his mind was already counting the Boone and Crockett points. Moving quickly, the hunter carefully aimed the Leopold scope on his .300 Win Mag at the unsuspecting buck. As he was about to squeeze the trigger on this deer of a lifetime, his friend alerted him to a funeral procession passing slowly down Highway 7. The hunter pulled away from the gunstock, set the rifle down, took off his hat, bowed his head and then closed his eyes in prayer. His friend was stunned, "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen you do. You actually let that trophy deer go to pay respects to a passing funeral procession. You are indeed the kindest man I have ever known, and I feel lucky to call you a friend." The hunter shrugged. "Yeah, well, we were married for 37 years."

  5. I find neither of your stories funny, nor do they qualify as even being 'slightly amusing'. That you attempt to justify the 'humor' makes it that much less funny. As far as your second 'story', your lack of professionalism makes things even less so. It's apparent that the day your class was taught about professionalism; you were either asleep, or you thought it applied to everyone BUT you. Your actions and your lack of maturity are the antithesis of what those of us that are SERIOUS about our profession are trying to accomplish. Your attempt at casting aspersions (the attempt at using 'rookie' as an insult), only makes you more all the more reprehensible. There are many that regularly post in these forums that have more time in service than apparently you've been alive. Rather than lash out at those who DARE to chastise you for your actions, maybe you should view this as a 'teachable moment' and learn proper ettiquette and professional demeanor from those of us who are quaified to point out your errors in judgement. Congratulations, you and your contemporaries have succeeded in setting EMS back to the days of it's inception. I hope you're proud!

  6. Herbie-- Just for the sake of argument, consider this position... Human sexuality is one of our most basic and strongest drives. It comprises a huge portion of our psychological being. You, as a heterosexual individual, can bring to fruition your sexual desires in a fashion that is encouraged and supported by society and current tradition. Let's flip this for a moment; imagine that homosexual relationships are the *only* approved sexual relationship, and you have been born hetero. Could you decide to only engage in homosexual relationships, even though you feel no sexual drive towards the same gender? Could you decide to live a life of celibacy in order to conform with someone's idea of proper society? Would that be psychologically healthy for you, and would you be able to live a happy life? I want you to really sit there and really think about this. Very hard. Imagine yourself in this exact situation. How does that idea sit with you? Because that's exactly the situation that anyone of homosexual orientation is in. Imagine everyone getting in your business and calling you a malfunction, damaged goods, should just be able to CHOOSE not to have sex with the opposite gender because it's just plain wrong... imagine facing discrimination because you want to marry the person you love and wanting to start a family... fear for your job, fear that people will beat the hell out of you just for being born the way you are... Not so easy as being in the majority and secure in your position... Wendy CO EMT-B

  7. I'm still stumped on the whole distraction thing. I am easily distracted by shiny objects. I am also easily distracted by a man with no shirt who has a great set of washboard abs.... does that mean that I am a menace to society? (I refuse to comment on the troll emtpociet's posts - it would be a waste of my time to expend energy on the garbage that person posts). I am easily distracted by a completely rebuilt 1972 Chev truck, especially if it is red. What is this "distraction" that people are talking about when they talk about gays in the military? Gays are there to do a job, just like straight people. There is no more distraction than having a male soldier check out a female soldier, or vice versa. Soldiers are supposed to be adults and act like adults. This distraction excuse is just that - an excuse. I'm also stumped by the DADT being a complete discrimination issue, and people thinking that is ok to leave it in place, with no evidence to support it. In the workplace, I can't hire or fire someone based on their sexual orientation. If their actions are contrary to the job that the hold, and puts the project or someone's life or limb in jeopardy, that is a completely different thing. Their ACTIONS made the difference, not their orientation. Yes Herbie, there are a lot of things in the US that should be on the top 250 list... the economy, employment figures, the US trade deficit, the instability of the US dollar, education, health care..... the list can go on and on. That being said, those people that the citizens of the US voted into power decided that this was something they wanted to work on. You don't agree, voice your opinion to your elected officials, and use your vote to express your displeasure.

  8. There are two ways to look at this. 1: She's empowering herself by attempting to benefit financially from her once-in-a-lifetime experience, and by doing this she is breaking free from the traditional molds of society where sexuality is either licit or illicit. 2: She's devaluing herself by commoditizing her sexuality, and is little better than any other whore who sells sex for financial benefit. I'm halfway between the two. It's her body, and she has a right to do whatever she wants to with it, as long as she's found some way to make this "transaction" legal. But, I think she has not thought through the emotional and potential physical consequences of sexual interaction in this fashion. For example, is she planning to have her partner screened for STDs, or is she going to take the $5 mil HIV risk? I wonder how she feels about sex in general- the first time is usually not as enjoyable as subsequent times, and instead of finding a partner she connects with on the emotional/psychological level, she's going for a wallet. What if her partner is extremely unskilled, or hurts her intentionally? How will that affect her future sexual interactions? She's worth more than her coochie... I hope she realizes that fact. I do think that putting yourself out as a sexual partner for financial gain does devalue you in some way... but how individual people react to that varies by the person. Also, why are we still perpetuating the idea in our modern society that virginity somehow denotes value? Why is having sex with someone who's never had sex before so important in a society that doesn't value the "first born" in nearly the same way that progeny were valued in the Middle Ages? I was a virgin before I had sex with my husband (but was not married to him at the time I lost my virginity), and he's the only man I've ever had sex with. That makes me an oddity, it seems, in our society... but I don't value my husband any less because he had a sexual past before meeting me... No easy answers here. Wendy CO EMT-B
