I recent had the opportunity to speak with Bill Weeks, one of the CMAT regional chairs about their organization and how it works. The people volunteering in Japan right now are doing so out of their own pockets, travel is not provided. If you wish to help out a friend who went over you can make directed donations to help cover their expenses and still get the tax reciept. Also anything they bring over will stay there to continue helping the Japanese people. Truly a noble organization that deserves our support.1 point

I've been thumbing through my job description, wondering where the section is that I became a public safety person in. The last time I looked at the patch on my sleeve is said Paramedic, not Police or Officer or Detective or Investigator. But I digress. :/ I don't come to work everyday thinking that my job is to enforce the laws of the city, county and state. Mandated reporting pertains to child abuse and neglect and elder abuse. It isnt my job to blow someone in to the local PD while they are having a "crisis", that MIGHT have been caused by ilicit drugs. I would be concerned about leaving the drugs in plain sight if there might be a child present, in that case I would ask the patient to please put it away. I'm there to take care of the patient. Period. In the case of the 2 minors having sex. Again I'm not going to "tell mommy and daddy". Teenagers are tricky to put it mildly. It takes alot to get them to open up to you and trust you enough to tell you whats going on. If their parents arent around, I am their biggest advocate. I might not agree with the kids having sex but it's my job to make sure they are ok and unhurt before I would consider signing them off. And I would talk to BOTH of them and to do that you have to have a repoir built with 1 of them to get them to talk. I'm not condoning teenage sex but they are going to experiment. It's part of growing up and you aren't going to stop them. So my answer to the OP's questions: #1 no #2 it depends1 point

Dwayne had a giant case of open mouth, insert foot where you were concerned, 11outof10. He tends to do that sometimes. He made an inference he shouldn't'a made. Hopefully he'll man up and apologize. (GIANT HINT, DWAYNE...) He already struck out the statement in his original post with a footnote... but hopefully he'll come back and really apologize. He doesn't take pleasure from sniping n00bs, he actually has a passionate investment in making sure people actually learn. Gets a little excited and shoots off before he thinks sometimes. As far as his age old battle with Spenac, just ignore the side show there... really, there's a long history there and it's really just good for entertainment and not much else at this point. He comes on strong, but he posts a lot that's worth reading. Trust me- just because you're broke and feel pressed for time is not a good reason to skimp on your education. These are the building blocks for your CAREER, not just some fancy letters to put behind your name, hence why some feel so strongly about this issue. Look at some adult learning theories- it is impossible to really absorb and be able to critically think about the material you are covering if you are doing 12 hour class days and 12 hour clinical days with no "down" time to let your brain do what it is supposed to do. There is learning that occurs when you are NOT COVERING the material, and to deprive yourself of that and force yourself just to regurgitate to pass the test is not a great idea. You *are* going to lose a lot more of the material than if you give yourself the time to really absorb it and be able to work with it in the field under pressure. You want to be a GREAT medic, not just a mediocre one, right? Then do yourself the favor of allowing yourself the time to learn. You will be glad you did. There are ways to finance school and afford a good program. Medicine is more than remembering drug calculations and physical skills... it's about critical thinking and that only comes with time and deep understanding of the material you are working with. You are so full of yourself it is not worth my effort or time to respond more than once to your attacks. You make it clear that you try to belittle anyone that presents any opinion that is different than yours. Have a great day. Now back on track with the OP. As you see this is a hot button issue. I have met some darn good medics from the 12 weeks schools but they are the rare exception. I have met some worthless lazy piece of crap medics from the 2 year schools though as well. Any education you seek will require you to be dedicated and focused. You must put forth the effort and not settle for the basic text book answer. If it turns out your school or professors are lousy you will have to put in the effort to make yourself the best possible. You will have to weigh the short term as well as the long term benefits. Only you know your financial situation as to what you can or can not do at this time. People will spout off usless BS like I was able to do the 4 year degree while raising 20 kids and walking uphill both ways barefoot and naked in the snow with packs of wolves biting my rear so everyone should be able to. Don't waste your time with them. I encourage you to get the degree if possible as stated as it can transfer to other degrees. Transfering does not mean leaving EMS it means you have reached for more. Some blindly seem to think if you transfer your degree credits you can not continue in EMS. They are wrong. Some choose to get their RN, CRNA, and other degrees yet remain working in EMS. Others get their EMS degree then stop the education process entirely, those are the medics that scare me. No matter which route to Paramedic youj choose, certification must only be a beginning to your education if you are truly going to be any good.1 point

Sorry you are wrong, the fact that you will not sleep with someone based simply on skin color is the most basic barometer of how racist you are or are not. I realize it is painfull for the racist to admit, but it is true. There is no other action that more clearly defines how you feel about the other races; if they are not good enough for you to date, then you clearly feel your race is superior. Funny, the crickets are still chirping. There have been 4 or 5 non-racist who have stepped forward, the rest of the room must clearly be racist. Call your mom and tell them you are considering dating a black person, lets see what happens-1 points

At one time the smartest people in the world thought the world was flat, you were labeled crazy if you argued; just because you do not understand the superiority of my intellect does not make me crazy.-1 points

A good number of deaf people have been killed in chokehold by police officers. ( I have nothing against them and in matter of fact, we consider each other as professional partnership and my prayer is on my lips every single day for not cops but all responders). Why? Deaf tends to frantically tried to use hands saying they just cannot breath. I don't know about the same situation with paramedic but heaven help them since they do not know ASL.Pity. Ok.. now how about this,, if you come across the worst disaster similiar to 9/11 and you come across countless Deaf patients who look at your eyes and pleading you to please communicate in a hurry. Can you do that? NAH! I mean.. come on now. What about a very short person who cannot lift the stretcher? What about a cop with artifcial leg, running after a bad guy? What about this ? I had a DEAF doctor at university who treated me. No.. I mean.. seriously he did. You guys GOT to stop slapping disabled folks with DIS-Ablitity.. and START looking for a disabled responder's ABILITY. In matter of fact, I am sure this Deaf responder would be able to perform a far better than some of your areas that you ARE NOT GOOD at. An EMS director , when he heard about me as a Deaf responder.. he was THRILLED! You wanna know why ? He valued my skill.. he lived in a small city where there was a Deaf campus and he needed a person like me. So... stop and THINK. And be willing to work together as team. Compensate each other for skills they lack. All those responds I have read here, I hear door slamming shut without giving another thought of what Deaf EMS can do rather than what they cannot do.. You certainly missed some wonderful responders. Too bad for you but you know what? this is not going to stop me. I believe in my ablitiy and I can do my job. Ain't giving up just because of you guys have been saying in this forum. I sure as hell ain't going to let this negative perspective stop me from applying as a volunteer. Think it over will ya ? If you have a gut, go read a book " On the Edge" written by a Deaf EMS. Sighs... Next time, before you slam the door.. think. Work together.-1 points

I am here, all you have to do is say my name three times like beetlejuice. Good point beiber, you are correct, it is sad that this is such a racist country. Now before you all get mad, let me check the dictionary; racist: The notion that ones own ethnic stock is superior. Most everyone in this room is racist, but can't admit it. Here is a little self-test that I have mentioned several times, but cant get anyone to fess up to. To see if you are racist, ask this question to yourself: If I am white, have i ever dated or made love to an african american ? If you are african american, have I ever dated or made love to a white person ? If the answer is no, you are a racist. Even if you are non-racist enough to have done the deed, you would never admit it in this forum for fear of how you will be judged ? Which may make you more racist than the person that never has. Furthermore, every guy in here at some point in his life has done the fattest, ugliest chick (of his own race) because he was hard up and drunk, but never seems drunk enough to cross the jungle-fever line (what does that say) ? Fortunately, the women are a little more decerning, as far as number of partners, but just as racist as thier male counterparts. And please spare me all the comments about how you are best friends with the one AA person at your workplace. You have never had dinner at his/her house, or invited them to yours (at least 98% of you have not).-2 points

I am liberal ? I thought I was quite the conservative, silly me. I would think it would be hippy liberals who all about having sex with minors, and excusing the behavior. Most liberals are closet child molesters, most conservatives are closet homos, glad I am independant.-2 points

Your logic does not work here, homosexuality is a mental disease, I am not mentally ill, so I would not sleep with a homosexual. I have no problem hanging out with homosexuals in a social or workplace setting, so I do not think I qualify as a homophobe. But back to the original point, I still hear the crickets chirping, where are all those non racist who date everyone ?-4 points
