  3. It's some sort of Supraventricular Brady-Escape Rhythm. Without a clearer strip; we can't fully interpret the Rhythm... You have to look at all variables which may have caused the Artifact. Was there fine muscle movement? Were you in the Ambulance with the engine running? Was someone in the house operating an electric powered appliance? Was there ointment or gel on the skin? Was the skin dry? Did you press on the electrodes due to diaphoresis or dry/flaky skin? Have you notice the Monitor to have Artifactky isoelectric lines on other patients? Maybe it needs service... Remember she's approaching 100y/o... If her complaint was just feeling tired and the only finding was this bradtcardia; Pharmaco-Intervention could wait until you get to the ER.... How was the rest of her presentation? Mental Status? What was her RR and BP (You said stable but stable is subjective)? SpO2? PMH and Medications (Prescribed, OTC, Herbal, Recreational)? Who let you into the house? Bystanders/family/friends; any story? So many factors to take into consideration before the bolus of 650cc NaCl... BLS intervention: when in doubt, do. ALS intervention: when in doubt, don't do, for the most part (Unless it's ECG, SpO2, ETCO2, & IV)... I'm just saying... I wasn't there; I'm sure your Interventions were appropriate... Thank you for sharing...

  4. Novelty gifts are always a little bit fun so the bear is cool, but everyday working equipment is a bit of a let down IMHO. Why not buy a bedpan for a new nursing grad?

  5. Pretty common for n00bs to give out during CPR. The adrenaline rush wears off, and you crash hard. With experience, you learn not to care, and can do it hours non-stop.

  6. Just an idea but check in the couch for some change, your best girl deserves a bit more than a $10.00 gift. If your broke then do something special, like a card for "free cloths wash for a week" "coupon for special (ahem) favour" or "prepare a meal of her choice" she busted a hump getting her ticket YOU SHOULD TOO if you want to keep her as your GF. I got a pen with my initials on it from my ex (we were broke too she saved up for months before) ... after 30 + years I still have and use it. To bad I still don't have her .

  7. One thing you have to remember with Asystole and PEA is your Hs and Ts. What was the cause of his cardiac arrest here? You said he said he had been stung. Maybe following your anaphylaxis protocol while doing your cardiac arrest protocol... Just food for thought...from my iPhone. ;-)

  8. Medevac is sometimes a possibility, but it is rather difficult to justify fixed or rotary for every call, or we would need an aircraft posted at the station.... I guess a case in point is that uyesterday I went 16 hours straight out, drove almost 900 kms, all for three calls! During this time the other crew ran 3 more, so there would have been 6 flights out of here in less than one day. Ground is likely going to continue to be the main process, I would imagine. I have considered bringing my portable DVD player and mounting it in the unit so the pts, especially some of the peds ones, can watch something during the trip. While it might not be acceptable to the "big guys", it would possibly help with patient comfort and happiness!

  9. I didn't personally do anything out of the norm, but I was once dispatched to a haunted house. There was this very superstitious Mexican family who called the sheriff because the "ghost was getting angry". The father was feeling a little nauseous, and the family was blaming the ghost. I asked the father what he had done throughout the day and he claimed he had gone to work (construction in the hot summer sun). I asked the father what he had eaten (a few spoonfuls of Corn Flakes in the morning and he skipped lunch). I asked what he had drunk (a bottle of water in the morning). And they were blaming all of this on the family ghost... They wanted the deputy to force to ghost to leave. He was nice enough to go inside and give the ghost a trespass warning. I advised against encouraging them, but he defeintly went out of his way.

  10. Medical school is hard & complex enough without this added annoyance. Unless you're planning to work in an ER, EMT training is going to be of little practical use. Granted, all students should know BLS & ALS practices, but why if somebody wants to be a dermatologist, then why should they have to ride an ambulance to do so? Hell, if somebody wants to be a general practitioner, why should they have to ride an ambulance? Remember when you guys jumped on me for carrying LE equipment and having combat training? This is similar to that. Doctors and EMTs have very different jobs, and I think it's silly to require that doctors learn how to be EMTs. Plus, I'd probably hate to ride with a med student. I have a strong feeling they'd be full of themselves.

  11. Wow, are you guys really this obsessed with me? I'm near NYC, but I don't live in NYC. I don't want to give my exact location/department, as I don't want my employer to easily identify my postings. All too often nowadays background checks involve internet checks. I like to keep myself anonymous. "Bus" is the slang term we use amongst ourselves here. RA is the way we refer to ourselves over the air, and outside agencies request an ambulance by asking for a "RA". And if you listen closely to the North Hollywood radio transmitions, they send the RA to the CP (which I believe stands for command post). I assume this is probably a few blocks away from the war zone.

  12. Tell them it's the law. Thanks to the news, most people are accustomed to there being legal limitations on professional drivers, pilots, train motormen, etc... They'll be glad you're being careful.

  13. I think washing your hands correctly is more important than the particulars you use to wash them. Simply letting cold water hit your hands for three seconds before drying them doesn't cut it (this is what I see every lay person do in bathrooms, and it's disgusting). I stand there scrubbing for twenty seconds or so while three or four people use the sink next to me.
