AK I am so embarrassed by my fellow countryman's past comment so if you would be so kind to allow me ...... Dear a noob Canadian Paramedic DOOGs firstly a welcome, I believe "we" have perhaps met from CPW ? This very out of character for you and stepping into an area of honour after just 4 posts on this site, to the my band of my brothers is serious folly at this juncture. I have held my brother Rob in my arms, as, I was one of the privileged few that knew from initial dx what the final outcome would be, the memories of those few days and end of life discussions are mine and Robs alone. Never to be discussed, except that I am most proud that Rob chose the path he did .. he climbed a Mount Everest every day. I too as the many others am seriously fucked up / messed up by this announcement, its been many, many years waiting for Bledsoe's dreaded notification. I know that my brother AK too was aware, but HE deals with lifes challenges in his "own way" as he is his own man and I am honoured to call HIM my friend. BUT I am soooo displeased with your post, Doog, yet a thank you as my deep sorrow has changed to serious teeth clenching anger, so thank your <insert your great spirit> that I am not anywhere close to you this minute as my Scottish heritage coping mechanism's are not any where near as refined as AKflightmedic. I am most pleased to bring to you one of my most favourite biblical quote's so you may pick up what I am laying down, well, that is if you are a religious man. Ezekiel 25:17 (eh). (somewhat amended) The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak minded through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper (or in this case, the village idiots helper) and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison, disrespect and dis my brothers opinions out of unadulterated ignorance .... And you will know I am the Squinter when I lay my vengeance upon YOU! cheers2 points

First, do you think his death has impacted me any less than the others here because I lack belief? Second, are you stating my coping mechanism has no relevance here since it is not religious in nature? The topic is how we cope, I shared, others shared. I knew Rob personally, I also knew his beliefs or should I say non-beliefs. It is entirely relevant and entirely appropriate place to share...unless you have a different copy of a rule book somewhere?? Dust, still able to stir up a thread without actively contributing...awesome!2 points

Thanks everyone. I'm doing better. I still have a few moments of regret for missing out on time with Rob, but I'm coping. Plus my wife bought me a new set of skis and politely informed me that if that doesn't do something to put me in a better mood she's going to mail me to Peru.1 point

However, unlike police, health care professionals needs to include their interpretation of what's going on. It isn't simply enough to list vital signs and exam findings. Those have to mean something as a whole, and diseases are not nearly as clearly defined or as straight forward as the penal code. Those interpretations needs to be justified in facts, but they also need to be documented. Yet that is not the standard used by physicians. Why is that? Simply because chronological order isn't nearly as important as it's made out to be. Unlike the police where certain facts have to be established in a specific order (in order to do things like justifying a search or arrest, or use of force), it doesn't matter if I ask allergies before medications, or look at the abdomen before listening to lung sounds. The order of treatments provided, and the ensuing response, is the only thing that's chronologically important in terms of the care provided. On a similar note, I've also always considered SOAP note style H&Ps to be fairly straight forward and easy when they were available on a discharge or transfer. That's why you take the stand. I'd rather have to dumb down my testimony than look like the 2 Michael Jackson paramedics who just testified.1 point

I have to say this before my head explodes. Doogs how dare you demean someone else's coping mechanism and feelings without knowing who ANY of us are??? Really???!! 4 posts on this forum and you dare to attack a member who knew Dust personally?! Spewing BS about negative religious views?? I think you better step back and step off. And AK...you are absolutely right! Dust is still stirring the pot..how freaking awesome is that!1 point

I too, have found this to be extremely difficult to deal with. I truly think that we all feeling like we just ran into a brick wall. 2 days ago, I signed into this forum, wondering what threads I hadnt read and if Dust had replied to any of them yet. I really looked forward to reading his replies to scenarios and questions because he was such an advocate for the betterement of EMS...and of ourselves. And before I could even sign in....theres this banner at the top announcing that he had passed away. My initial reaction was WTF!!!!! no way!!...my heart started pounding and I started to hyperventilate and the tears started to roll. The initial reaction has calmed but the tears havent stopped and my heart is still heavy. There was a bunch of us in the chatroom last night and it was awesome!!! It seemed like old times with a bunch of us older members chatting and joking around....and remembering Dusty. Now you KNOW that he is sitting up there laughing at us all...thinking to himself "They need to get over this and move on. Havent I taught them ANYTHING???!! and I cant even kick thier asses for it!!!" The truth of the matter is, its hard to let go of it, the shock and the hurt. His legacy will live on in all of us though. As long as we continue to help EMS get to where it should be and help each other along the way. And most importantly, to pass on our knowledge to the new people coming up through the ranks, and help them be the best EMS providers that they can be. All we need to do is walk through the doors he opened for us.....1 point

As a new first responder (back in 2004), I found myself stopping more often than not providing what aid that I could. Of course, I kept a BLS bag including O2 because I was a volunteer and had that equipment at my disposal. Now that I'm a paramedic and not carrying a jump bag of any kind, I find I can watch and wait. I'm always watching. If it's serious, I will act otherwise I stay out of it. And, if I do stop to offer aid, as soon as EMS arrives, I'm outta there.1 point

Big rep points for that excellent answer! That should be in the textbook! I was using tourniquets for a good 20 years before it became the latest fashion. And getting yelled at for it too, of course. But -- as usual -- I turned out to be right.1 point

Are we really ready to be dishing more money to ACP because that time is coming soon as per the "courteous email" i'm sure everyone recieved if you're a registered practioner. Mooooooo Mooooooo can you hear the cash cow calling? I personally believe paying more money to ACP isn't going to benefit me or any of us, and frankly i'm tired of it. Why does ACP exsist if AHS has taken over? Why don't they take over for examinations, registrations etc? I'm sure it's not quite cut and dry but..... Sorry for the short rant,i'll be back to post more...... gotta run, stay warm.1 point

You can't hear it, but I started a slow clap. I am lighting up each and every practitioner that whines too me, and ask them to outline to me how they have supported an association in this province, or what years they attended the AGM. The glazed over look os always the same.1 point

I have to admit that I have done my share of complaining aimed at ACP, but my attitude has changed some most recently. Don't get me wrong - I still feel that it is an organization with no real use to practitioners in the province. The change in attitude is mostly that I think we may be getting exactly what we deserve. Face it, an organization that has no input and no support from its membership is highly unlikely to be able to respond effectively. AGMs are very poorly attended, for example - 30 to 60 people out of the thousands who could is a pathetic turnout. There are solutions, I think. Most of us say that we can't take the time to attend the AGM. This may be true, though I can't see any more than half of us being on shift at any given time. Life gets in the way too - lets assume that realistically only one in 10 of us can go. Well, that still means that 800 people should be at the AGM, right? There are other solutions to allowing practitioners input as well - including making the AGM completely online, in a forum/vote format. We are stuck with ACoP, whether we like it or not. Maybe a few more of us need to get in and do something about it, instead of sitting back and bashing it. I have a few more ideas, and possibly plans to run next year once this studenthood is finished. Anybody else got input?1 point

WE did not deserve this .. no clapping from me, at one point AB was respected as a leader .. no longer due to the leadership that was 'HIRED'. Now an RN as a assistant registrar .. say what ? Well medic north I just want to say I have tried my best but when by-laws changed (called housekeeping) the concept of self governance was lost in its entirety. ACoP is an arm of the AB Conservatives Government plain and simple as is ACSP now, until there is a change of government ... YOU will all be paying for national reciprocity exams. YOU will all be paying for Foreign Health Care Credentialing. YOU will all be paying for "CON ED" reporting redevelopment . BUT fortunately you ALL will no longer see my face at any AGM .. simply because it is a proven waste of time for anyone to attend, unless your an EMR and NCSO wanting to climb a political ladder. I am simply nauseated by the fact that the propaganda of "what can you do for your college instead of what the college can do for you"-1 points

Quote you a law ? Read your Bible. If you are atheist I guess you have no obligations except to your selfish self. The fact that you say "you used to stop all the time" tells me that you know you are wrong now. In your early years you did the right thing, now that you are old, lazy, and burned out, you choose to do the wrong thing.-1 points

I'm disappointed that AK chose to use this thread to spew his negative opinions on religion. There is certainly a better time & place for this type of "discussion". Manure stinks, is not pleasant to deal with and can leave unpleasant lingering effects. But spread it on your flowerbed and see what happens - in season. Life is like that - $hit happens that isn't nice but if we accept it as part of what will eventually makes our lives richer, it can give us hope. Hang in there.-3 points
