Greetings ALL . Ok so no fear any more no hiding from the world .. I have not posted for a LONG time ... sorry all. So WHY ? .. well 37 years as a REMT-P and 12 years on top of that, in ICU ... Well it caught up with me, PTSD axis 1 cluster B . Robs and a non member of EMT city Peter Mitchell in the UK (took his life) well these deaths death hit me so very very hard ... so anyway I have a new hero. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JwoqUl90BM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odXWyEk2O00 https://www.facebook.com/Thelongwayhomemm?ref=stream If anyone is on facebook please give Kate a holler minimum ... if you can spare a couple of bucks well she really needs it. Kate was "saved" and god I hate that word BUT a civy Paramedic made a huge difference in her life, she's running for all of us that wake up at night in a cold sweat. Because once that zip file you THINK is closed in your head opens up .. the Operating system runs amuck . cheers Squint1 point

Welcome back, hope you are feeling and doing better. I wish I had an answer to the question of suffering, only to say that I have no particular belief that it is due to any sort of supernatural being's supreme plan. However, I am not here to talk about such things, only to welcome you back.1 point

Thanks island .. the culture of EMS is oblivious .. better said, hides behind the "suck it up princess syndrome" we are just humans and after all the pain/suffering and cruel deaths we are subjected to0, its no wonder really, we are not superhuman but are expected to be, by employers. So 4 different experiments with SSRIs .. they did not help they made it worse, a pill does not take the years of memory away or make one feel "less depressed" I believe after all the research I have done is that constant bombardment with endogenous catecholamines, the crappy shifts, long hours without sleep (I believe now this adrenal rush we get) well it eventually screws up synapses between Cerebral Cortex and Amygdala ..well that's my theorem and like hell im taking any more meds other than anti anxiety and pain rx (my shoulder needs a new plastic one) lifting so many phat people under major stress situations wore it out prematurely. This Kate gal s doing her damnedest (last year she made a Guinness world record .. see the links) I feel so compelled to support her as she has more physical strength and moral fortitude strength than I do .. its the least I can type a few emails and give her a few pesos ... I know this sounds strange (ps I do not believe in any god) but I do believe in Karma .. I keep thinking, did I screw up and kill someone in error and now being punished ? I dunno .. realistically with chance vs anti chance in over 12 + 40 years its more than likely (like your very rational fear).. maybe I deserve this and I should have been a Plumber instead ? I would not wish this on my worst enemy .. some days death seams the only escape .. I now understand why regular folks do themselves in .. I now understand that Mental Pain can worse than Physical, that said living with both is very difficult .. Rob and I talked about this a lot, frankly I thought Rob knowing in depth about his disease would take this route, if there was a God .. WHY oh Why would s/he invent such suffering ? ps I will not respond to I will pray for you crap. The one thing that keeps me going (is my new rescued red nose pit bull) YES they are not all monsters .. and my Grandfather who was a POW in France in WW1, he lived to be 96 and enjoyed every day and sharp as a tack till the end .. well, I just can't comprehend the atrocities he saw and how he was treated .. it gives me solstice, well ... some days . Oddly enough we can help many many others in this life but I think we forget just how to help ourselves. OLD ? well f u ! ... dinos wtf ? LMAO ! Dwayne your a prick but I still love you man and btw Dwayne is a Cool Name !1 point

God Squint...just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water... I for one have certainly missed having you here. I'm sorry my friend to hear of your troubles. But, you are pretty old, and that can happen. I mean, if Island feels the same, I see a trend here for dinosaurs... Good to have you back. We need you both, spreading hate and discontent, to keep us kids in line... Welcome back Brother...1 point

I was absolutely shocked when I read the first few responses to this post. It's not warm and fuzzy and PC to avoid defamation and insults. It's human decency, empathy and emotional maturity. I challenge anyone of us to spend a few hours in this woman's wheels.1 point

Lawsuits are not always the idea of the person involved. They often stem from others who are part of organizations which defend people who they feel have been victimized. We often have children who have been victimized in some way and often the kids or the parents will just want whatever to go away and be left alone. However, the DA, DSHS/CPS, doctor, RN or some patient advocate group might want to make an issue out of it. The person then gets caught up in a whirlwind of legal issues stirred by others. Ever watch an ADA or CPS go after parents or try to force a child to say somebody they trust did something really, really bad to them? But, it still can come right back to the person who did wrong to begin with. Had this EMT been a professional, the photo would not have been taken and this woman would not be called a cow on EMS forums or causing the media to print what is news. This person does not deserve a comment like this or any of the other comments about her size from someone who has an EMT license. This lady did not attack EMTs as a profession. Her attorney is going after the one EMT who put your profession in a bad light. There is no need to go on and on about how everything is her fault including her weight especially when what happened to her has helped get someone off the street who didn't belong as an EMT.1 point

Unfortunately by the time the NY Daily got the photo this had already gone viral early this year in the Social Media networks. It was also lumped into NY's other photos which created headlines. Chances are this lady was contacted by EMS and the fire department during that investigation. Once the lady filed, much of the information had been made public. I also believe there was a statement released about what not to do and this is being used in many training sessions in health care. Most privacy laws by State and institutions are written as "which might give the identity of the person". It does not have to be a name or SS#. If this was your loved one and this hit the media in your area, there is a good chance you will recognize them. Some can recognize a person at a distance just by their standing position. In this case you also have race as an issue. I only read a few of the posts when the photo first hit the media and stopped in disgust. But, regardless of skin color this was not appropriate for a health care worker of any license. If this was a random person with no health care license then there might not be such consequences. But, once you get a license in health care, regardless of its level there is some expectation to the patient and the public that you will conduct yourself in an ethical and professional manner. If this had been a nurse, the BON would already have been involved. Nursing takes this very serious regardless if that person is still a patient. If this person had been this EMT's patient or within the walls of any medical facility, this is just plain unprofessional. Also, with all the GPS coding on photos by many cameras and cellphones, it is not difficult to determine the location and when it was taken. https://www.ncsbn.org/NCSBN_SocialMedia.pdf1 point

I think there are several parts to the OP's question that need to be answered/addressed separately. As for what you should do in regards to your future field, none of us can answer that but YOU need to figure out what it is you want to do. DO NOT try to go to RN and PA school. You are wasting one. If you want to be an RN, be an RN. If you want to be a PA, be a PA. Getting your EMT/Medic in addition to RN or EMT is a fine idea but will not get you much more in your current location. SBU staffs the SCPD helicopter and all of them are medics, no nurses. Your chances of getting on the helicopter depends on who you know and I can almost guarantee you will not get on it will DWI convictions. You will more than likely not be able to get a job with FDNY or any of the NYC hospital services. Some of the privates on the island might hire you with your convictions but since on LI EMTs are a penny a dozen, your chances are very slim. You also asked if you will be able to get your EMT cert. The answer is, most likely. Here is a link to the NYS EMS policy on certification for people with felony convictions. http://www.health.ny.gov/professionals/ems/policy/09-05.htm It says to refer to Part 800 which lists the specific felonies which are disqualifying, and surprisingly, DWI is not on there. You do need to let your instructor know that you have a felony conviction and then things will be assessed from there. Here is the Part 800 (search for the word 'conviction' on the page to get to the relevant part). http://www.health.ny.gov/professionals/ems/part800.htm Your best bet is to contact the state and find out what there process is. You should also talk to others at the 2 vollies you are with. There are probably a few that work for the privates and can tell you what their experience is. As others have said, it sounds like you need to get some help with your drinking problem. Do it as soon as possible.1 point

As others have said: Get some counseling from the VA for your issues with alcohol use/ abuse and possible ptsd. Most states will not allow you to take the course orissue an EMS license with 2 felony charges on your record. We have a full NCIC background check every time we renew our license, including a full criminal history. You will be asked when you apply for the course and they will check. With a pair of DWI's not even the evil empire would hire you, if you could get a license.1 point

Other than the obvious issue with the DWI I would think you should question if you are capable of physically doing the job. You mentioned you are 40% disabled, I don't know exactly what that means but maybe you should question that as well. I will thank you for your service and seriously suggest you find a different line of work in lieu of the DWI's. You may also consider seeking counseling for the drinking.1 point

I'm calling shenanigans on this one. There's just too much that seems wrong about this. In an attempt to give the benefit you the benefit of the doubt: If you have two felony DUIs on your record, the most recent being less than a year old you're going to be lucky to be allowed to start your clinical year of PA school (if you really are in PA school). If you manage to obtain EMT or even paramedic certification your chances of getting hired with two felony DUI convictions on your record are slim to none. As much of being an EMS provider includes driving insurance companies won't cover you. If you can't drive then you can't get hired. Sound advice? Stop drinking. Find something else that interests you and pursue that. And as an aside, it wasn't the lawyer's fault you got six months in jail.1 point

Well, given that you're a multiple offender without remorse, even if you do get a cert I would hope no one would hire you.1 point
