Actually, we do.. It can be used for a multitude of injuries, and was specifically made for the elbow, shoulder or knee. Wooden, has a support bar and a wing nut to adjust. Yes, it's old. Older than old, prolly even older than Dust. Also, there is a new splint that can be use for such injuries. Seen it in October 07 JEMS. Traction splint, dislocated knee splint, lots of uses. Expensive though. I'd prolly have boarded them and used a 54" splint, and crossed over two 36" splints. Lots of cravats, maybe a SAM, some padding. I'd need to see it to get a better idea.

Amputate! No, but we have a bottle of betadine on the rig to disinfect our own injuries. Anything that breaks the skin in the ambo leaves you open to gawd knows what kind of infections. Best to get it checked at the ER, just in case.. Go to work healthy, come home the same way.

I think it has more to do with the seemingly greedy EMS Suppliers and Manufacturers. Compare catalogs, even new and old. Over a ten year span in our supply catalog bin, prices on commonly used items went up in Moore, Dyna-Med, EMS-A, Life-Assist, Bound Tree. It wasn't until more recently that we began buying "Economy by the case", i.e. Dukal, etc.

Unless you start wearing full Tyvek suits on every call, I would also find it hard to avoid at least minimal contact.

I'm aware they're available in the UK. I didn't say I've never seen them or they don't exist, I meant I'd like to see them on our rigs. Which, will never happen. They are a rare sight here, except on wheel chair/stretcher vans and bariatric rigs. In fact, that's the only time I've ever seen a ramp, on an ambulance specifically set aside for Bariatric's. However, it was not an option for Type 1 FWD rigs in 2003, our last purchase. It was only available on Type 2 Vans.

Looks like a toy, rather than an actual EMS item. I personally like hard plastic, rather than bags, but they end up weighing too much.

We have no street addresses here, rural homes only have a mail box number. If they have one at all, most ppl use the Post Office boxes. We use a Zone-House Number mapping system. My community is called "Expanded Zone 37-Alpha". If a home has the number of 1234; the dispatcher tells us "HELP Number 37A-1234". So, we get out the map book, turn to zone 37A, and look up house number 1234.. and then follow the map to that location. The only way to get lost, is if the home owner doesn't know their number. Frequent advertisements and mailings help to avoid that. This way, they don't even have to know what road, township or county their in, and some of the weekender's don't know that stuff even when not faced w/ an emergency. When someone calls 9-1-1, their help number that corresponds w/ their phone number comes up on the screen. So the caller, doesn't even have to know their number.

I'd like to see a ramp that pulls out from under the floor.. That, or patients that weigh less.

Hard to tell.. Nobody has ever came right out and said it, but anything that deals with wounds (rather than injuries that have recently occurred) or septic shock, that is always the first thing the ER asks.. Lots of staph patients, some w/ uber nasty drainage and odors. :pukeright:
