Is Rescue Ricky related to Resusi Anne?
-
I'm a volunteer too.. Please don't make us all look like the common whacker. Most of us are normal and just do it with out advertising. There is no need to carry anything on ones belt.. If there is a need, in your opinion. May I suggest black fabric, with black thread.. Wide webbing, like the handles of your bags, or like a mini-mag pouch is made of, works well. You can get it up to six inches wide in boxes at most craft stores. Duck canvas works well too, it's as strong as cordura, and looks the same. It's also cheaper, and available retail, where as cordura canvas is an imported product of the UK. By the way, when you reply, look to the lower right of the box. See that button Use it. Please.

Hope this show doesn't become another 'Saved!'
Chief1C replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
It's just Entertainment. Look what Emergency! did for EMS..? JEMS recorded tens of thousands of people who brought EMS from the doorstep of the funeral home to what it is today, because E! inspired them. They made so many non-realistic mistakes, it was almost a joke. Only stupid people get a personal education from a sitcom, learn CPR by watching TV. Sure, they get a general idea.. But unless it's a sim doll, it's going to be the wrong idea. Bending the arms, etc.. Especially Dr. Bracket's version of CPR. I don't mind some EMS entertainment, lord knows I detest all these crime drama shows that are flooding the time slots... Saved! was entertaining. They screwed up during the pilot, they got better advisors, and made the show more entertaining. However, the critics say they jumped the shark with that cliff hanger season finale.. So it was cancelled. That sucks.. At least a show to break the cliff hanger? I'd like to see an EMS reality show too. Thats only my opinion, you don't have to like it.. But it doesn't make any difference to me one way or the other. Won't affect how I do my job. -

Oxygen Tanks and environmental temperatures
Chief1C replied to skibum's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
I find the brass and rubber yoke gaskets last much longer, in any conditon, than the plastic or vinyl seals. Cost about three bucks, but they last longer, so its a plus.. and its brass. My valve and regulator is also brass to comply w/ the fire safety thing. -
Oxygen Tanks and environmental temperatures
Chief1C replied to skibum's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
I wondered if the climate or weather would hurt the dept. issued cylinder or regulator that I leave in my Unimed bag in the SUV. Air Gas East, pretty much the only EMS oxygen people that I could find in the state, said "Depends". It depends on the normal climates, etc. If you live in an enviroment with "extreme" climate, i.e. Alaska, Northern Canada; Arizona, Texas, Mexico, etc. High temps could ruin the seals and O rings; low temps can break the diaphram in your regulator. But with a shifting climate, no extreme changes like real cold to very warm in a matter of hours, such as Pennsylvania has, it shouldn't hurt it. However, for safety sake, All "Chemetron Cylinders, if possible, should not be left in temperatures that exceed 110*F, or drop below 38*F, for an extended period of time. The same goes for B&F, Flotec and Hudson Medical Gas Regulators". So. I just bring the bag inside when its cold. Not really that heavy, so if I need it, I bring it along. If I don't have it with me, I go to the fire house, no big deal. But its a better plan than having to replace the brass and rubber O ring, which are more expensive than the plastic (vinyl) green rings, but last longer and comply with federal standards. (according to the oxygen people). -

I fly someone if they need a specialty hospital or a trauma center.. two things we don't have unless it's okay to transport 90 or 120 minutes by ground. The Pedi Trauma Center is 2 hours away, and the Level 1 Trauma Center is over an hour and twenty minutes by ground.. If they have an extended ETA, I won't wait.. We often land chopped between us and the nearest hospital. I won't sit and wait longer than it would take to go to the closest ER.

OOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooh! MATH! I LOVE MATH!!! It's perfectly logical. It works based on multiples of nine, given the instructions, any number you choose will result in a multiple of nine and you get the same symbol on all multiples of nine.. Now someone will say, well, I did it twice, and the symbol changes.. Yes, it does, but if you screen print every time, all the symbols on the multiples of nine are the same. Every time you do it, the symbols change positions.

I'm just starting out and have a question...

I bought the local EMT Text, Brady Seven, and workbook about six months before I took PAEMTB. Since I had to wait for the class anyway, I decided to expand my field of knowledge. I already had first aid classes in the past, so I came in pretty familiar with splinting, bandaging, Signs & Symptoms, CPR, etc.. But this gave me time to read through various chapters, and go through the work book on a sheet of paper. In the end, I didn't use the workbook for the class, and passed it off to someone else the next year. I don't know if it helped me or not; I'd been reading Prehospital Care texts and old Brady books since I was eleven. I had an odd facination for EMS since syndications of Emergency! had been on WGN Chicago since the late 80's. Buy a pocket mask, you'll need one (if not, buy some alcohol wipes, Resusci-Annie's lips shouldn't be trusted.. ha ha. ); the text book that will be used in the class, a couple highlighters, a short stack of legal pads and few good pens.. Look over the book, but don't get too far in, read it when you cover it in class. Highlight important stuff in the book, and look it over before the tests.. Practice, practice, practice.. I don't know about ride alongs, I'm not too keen to allow a new EMT student ride on a complex call.. In case we don't do things the way the instructors want them to, or the course requires them to learn a specific skill. But, that's just my opinion. -
That's a test that I would fail! Focusing the lens of the eye to view objects close up, etc, i.e. accommodation testing. Lown-Ganong-Levine

Hrmm.. I won't waste my time justifing the use.. It will be lost in translation. However. Yes.. Somebody buys them.. and it was very kind of Proctor & Gamble Corp to purchase the Pedi-Air-Align boards for us.
-
Prior to getting Pediatric spine boards, thats what I would have used.. I've used the KED for stabilization of "hip" fractures, then scoop the patient onto a spine board that is padded with a long blanket, remove the scoop, and your set. Less movement, less time on a truely hard surface, less pain.

I agree w/ that; ebay can be quite helpful. eBay - EMT Equipment eBay - Medical Equipment eBay - Military Surplus eBay - Military Medical Surplus

If you get a DVD player that works for all regions, US and Europe; you can buy it from the UK right now.

Read a book? Ipod? Portable dvd player? Crossword puzzles? Gameboy? Sleep? -
I don't care if the person who shows up to save my life is a basic, medic or a six year old who just watched Rescue 911... But you better know every tiny detail of the skills involved with the job title you've earned.
