  2. We're faced with the potential for similar incidents, quite often. The region is covered with "Marcellus Shale Gas Exploration", they use hydraulic fracturing to drill, which includes use of caustic, toxic and radioactive chemicals. And.. with the popularity of METH labs, we've done quite a few clean up stand-by's. When these at home labs were just starting to pop up, the only clean up crew in Penna., was in Pittsburgh. So our stand by lasted anywhere from six to fourteen hours. One of the big materials used to make this toxic brew, is Anhydrous Ammonia, something many of the farms around here have on hand. People were stealing this shit, and transporting it in their car, to the lab. So there would be MVA's, where we'd find propane cylinders in the trunk, leaking this AA. You just have to be prepared for anything, anywhere; if there's a vapor, stage out, SCBA up.. walk in behind a fog line. AA may not be flammable itself, but the vapor can explode at high temps.
  3. I know at least two Paramedics who have Lupus, and they are still able to perform their duties. So, I guess it depends on how it affects your daily life, personally.
  4. Oh Gawd.. I am never drinking again..

  5. Perhaps it should be locked, so it dies and heals wounds?
  6. Aren't you like 23ish? Who are you, Doogie Howser?
  7. Had a call a few years ago, snow machine accident, involving a wooden fence. Open tib/fib, literally fluid coming out of the bone ends; and bilateral femur fx. Used a KB on the left leg, use a Reel traction splint on the right. Pulled traction on the femur, and splinted the lower limb in place, with pulses present at all times. Amazing device, very expensive. Flew the patient(s) out on two medevac's, all of them had femur fractures. We got back two KB's, a Hare splint, and the MAST. But we never saw the Reel again. We have several Sager splints, but I've yet to find anyone who is willing to use it b/c of ignorance mainly.
  8. 1.) Do you transport cardiac arrests? If they meet protocol criteria for resuscitation to be attempted. 2.) Do you WANT to transport cardiac arrests? If they meet protocol criteria for resuscitation to be attempted. 3.) What are the benefits gained? In the past two months, we've had two cardiopulmonary arrests (rural, significant distances between stations and patients, and patients and hospitals), one had ROSC, and is living with the same quality of life as they had before. Perhaps a little more careful. 4.) What are the risks? Other than the guy standing up, what's the difference? In complete honesty, and don't respond to this, keep it to yourself, so nobody's employment status is at risk. How often are you properly restrained while transporting a patient, in the patient module? My arms aren't abnormally short, nor am I suffering from a disability, and belted, I can't reach the patient. You can what if the safety of transporting in an ambulance, to death. 5.) Should any code blues be transported or should they all be called in the field if no return of spontaneous circulation? I guess my response would be different if we had Advanced Life Support nearby. So, I won't answer this one. I can't explain what EMS is in my eyes, b/c the values clearly are vastly different.
  9. They do. In fact, the 16 hour course, which is a prerequisite for all fire training.. In chocked full of videos like this. So is the first 48 hours of Delmar Essentials. The video is a training film.
  10. Teach them how to speak into a radio microphone.
  11. Those things... and EMS Monopoly. Something serious, and something funny.

    Scared stiff

They have a device to prevent injury from a late deploying driver side airbag, but the passenger side, not that I've seen. Best you can do is keep away from it, and cut the battery cables. Updated Vehicle Rescue courses also help, esp. w/ side curtain airbags, side-impact airbags and hybrid cables; these education programs mainly aid in cutting locations.
  13. When our crew flew to Florida at the tail end of September, the first airport, had no security at all. Nothing. They had TSA employees, in uniform, but never screened us - or anyone else. The next airport, Philadelphia, was pretty thorough. I couldn't help it, I said "do what ya gotta do, but consider yourself lucky, normally you have to buy me a drink to get this far". Not even a smirk, tough crowd. They weren't as intrusive on the way home, but clearly, I'm not saying which airports or airlines.
  14. The scoop is just as old of a technology as the spine board. Remember there wasn't a real market for companies that solely targeted ambulances. So, unless you made the spine board yourself, it may have been hard to find before 1970. Ferno began with selling folding and short aluminum spine boards; and right about 1969/1970, the Orthopedic Stretcher was developed. Except, until 1975, it had a pillow, instead of another section of aluminum.
  15. Especially since the number one thing that most paid companies look for in an EMT, is to drive the ambulance. A relatively clean driving record will be a big deal, esp. if it happened less than a month ago.
  16. I always want to lecture people, when they call Motorcycles; Donorcycles. B/c when someone dies on one, their organs go with them, to the funeral home. Often, it's a head injury that kills them, at least around here. Head and neck injuries. If we took some of them to the nearest hospital, maybe something could be salvaged. Just sayin'.

  20. Has anyone used the X-Collar?
  21. Chief1C

    Ouchy!

Easy there... I was trying to suggest not to put yourself down, as "Only a basic" and I gave the only advice I'm qualified to give. Stop moving it, splint it, possibly ice it, if you like using it maybe seek medical care soon before it heals awkwardly, and get an x-ray. I was thinking that short and to the point, was what you wanted to hear. Maybe it's dislocated? Maybe there are muscles or ligaments torn, I've never.. knock on wood.. fractured a finger. Nor have I treated specifically, a fractured finger. I was giving you what I thought you were looking for, a personalized effort toward answering your question. *I apologize if it wasn't the correct answer.

  23. I believe it was clear than I was sarcastically playing on the "what if" it to death scenario. I stated my view. Probably all of us have had someone with a painless spinal fracture. Especially with the frail elderly and nursing homes.
