A trauma bag... is not PPE. Gloves, goggles, gowns, tyvek suits, respirators, dust masks, hand sanitizer, bunker gear, hard hats, leather or other gloves, boots with steel toes, et al.. is PPE.

Dyna Med Modular Bag (Video Review)
Chief1C replied to Zach Smith's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
I'm a fan of plastic boxes myself.. less likely to be ruined on winter calls. I issue people a standard, pre-stocked, first responder bag; which is purchased that way. Don't issue oxygen, which if they wanna shell out the cash for it, they're more than welcome to purchase on their own. The only thing that gets added is a collar, one. And if I'm issuing it to an EMR (F.R.) I remove the glucose. It's nice to have ppl equipped, I don't encourage ppl going to scenes, in fact I forbid it. But folks happen upon stuff, and lives do get saved by folks in the right place during someone elses misfortune. EMT's get the same bag, except I add QuikClot and the same military style tourniquets that we're required to carry on the ambo. They're small kits, have the bare essentials; stop blood loss, start CPR, in a nutshell. When I was asked why provide them, I said even if they don't carry them in their vehicle - which some do not - they have skills, and they have families. It's just something nice to have on hand. I've used my stuff more for "at home" or non EMS related injuries than I have on calls where I've either reported or arrived while enroute to the ambulance. -
The blue things...? What the hell is the name?
Chief1C replied to Chief1C's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
Nope.. I'm thinking that the reason I cannot find what I'm picturing, is because they're no longer being produced. But I can't think of anything else that would work. -
In Texas.

The blue things...? What the hell is the name?
Chief1C replied to Chief1C's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
They're blue, plastic or vinyl, roll up, shaped like a back board, but prolly 3' wide -
Now I'm looking for a specific item, not a suggested item. They're blue, thin, smooth and you use them to transfer a patient from one bed to the other. I tried numerous terms, of what I thought they would be called, given their purpose. I have failed to locate them. Does anyone know.. what the hell the blue devices for transfering patients is called? Their industry name, so that I can locate it in a supply catalog.

Dyna Med Modular Bag (Video Review)
Chief1C replied to Zach Smith's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
They were sold as "Organizer Modules". I use those pouches in our MCI bag, each one has certain items, and all of them are the same. Makes triage quick and easy, IMO. Or at least that's a theory. And it must be a good one, because I see now they have vacuum sealed pouches of little bits of stuff to go into similar MCI kits. If only I could sell my ideas. Dyna Med sold the modules separate from the bag, and Dyna-Med no longer exists as a company separate from Galls. Galls doesn't sell them. Now I went out of my way and called Galls to confirm that sooo... just sayin'.. -
The only useless OB kit you can buy, is the ones titled "New Jersey OB Kits" sold by V.E. Ralph. A typical OB kit costs about $7 in a bag, and $11 in a box. No matter how you buy it, from a catalog or ebay, it's probably the same thing. Some get a little more pricey as they add stuff. I did a restock of all of our equipment, replaced anything that looked old. Be it gauze, OB kits, even worn boards. When I replaced the OB kits, if you have a Bound Tree Catalog on hand, they have like 9 diffierent versions, double that with the option of bag or box. I ordered the ones with Umbilical Scissors, instead of the scalpel. Just safer. So really, a $5 kit from amazon is just buying from an online bulk supplies company that uses Amazon.com as a retail outlet. It's probably no different than what anyone else has, and it's not a bad idea to keep one handy. I recommend it for rural folks.

At least coal would be something useful. -
If you consider the gunman blowing his brains out justice, then yes, brought to justice. I see it however, as a shame that he killed himself. I'd much rather have heard that a cop blew his brains all over the place. Or he mysteriously tripped, fell and a halligan bar was jammed through his forehead. Just sayin' I hope he is burning in the fires of hell for eternity.

Usually you can either do one or the other, get paid for calls; or get tax payers to pay for the agency. We could do one or the other. But considering that the pay out for billing would be probably triple what the tax payers could dish out.. I'd say leave the taxes for the fire service. I have a set of Crampons on the desk here, I'd very much enjoy strapping them to my steel toe boots and kicking you in the shin, spleen. Very much. Possibly forcibly inserting them into an orifice. Or maybe I'm just having a really bad day, and it's only an hour and fourteen minutes into the day.

how to open ambulance transportation in Pennsylvania
Chief1C replied to johnyemt's topic in General EMS Discussion
True dat.. Most of the privates around Philly are owned by the mob. Maybe you could get hooked up with one of them? -
The only thing that bothers me about a lack of gun control, is who can own firearms, with no control. I was in a local business, a typical rural establishment. They sell everything except the kitchen sink, but they could probably order one in two weeks. At the counter, I observed an individual whom I've known most of my life. I've also transported the individual numerous times..to the psych ward of a specialty hospital. The individual is prone to violent outbursts, is bipolar, schizophrenic, and is prescribed at least two dozen medications for mental health disorders, a list I can't frankly remember under "past history". The individual was buying shells for the Smith & Wesson fifty caliber handgun (a popular tool among bear hunters) that was casually brought in to show off, and is permitted to carry it anywhere. All that I could think was... This is a person that should neither have the right, nor privlidge to own any kind of firearm, much less something that could blow the head of a human to a mist of fine bone and liquified tissue. Certainly millions of people suffer from mental illness, as defined, depression, etc.. and most of them are perfectly stable. But there are some whom are not, but can go right in, fill out a form, and buy any sort of gun the want. Whether its to hunt, or go on a psychotic murdering rampage. It's not like they're going to tell the arms retailer what they plan on doing, and since a background check doesn't include a medical history, they'll never know.

You know, after a "holy hell, how hard is it to keep your mouth shut" lashing with a crew member. Someone said to me, that you don't see the police and fire, and ambulance people being interviewed, or out there crying. That the media should focus on them. I almost slapped him across the face with the (glass) bottle of birch beer in my hand. (1) ANYTHING we in emergency services say, whether it's to help us vent, or de-stress our selves.. Anything.. is almost always taken out of context, found to be offensive, and frankly discussion what was seen could border line a privacy violation. (2) That was probably one of the only newscasts where I didn't see anyone bothering emergency responders. We know some of those folks will be mentally ruined after this. IMO, the WORST feeling, is helplessness, and wishing you could do something; and when it's a child, it amplifies that ten times. We see people die in horrific manners all the time. I don't weep when I scoop someone up that shot themselves in their bedroom - or their barn; or when we pull a body from a car, or a house fire (unless I knew them). But I've had seven pedi arrests in a short period of time over the past few years, two traumatic.. and each one tore years off the end of my life span. I cannot even begin to imagine what the police, fire and emergency medical personnel are going through. This is one of those things you can plan for all year, but when it actually happens, it over powers your senses. I listed the local EMS agency's website on our page, for donations. I'm sure there are better things to donate to, like funerals, etc.. But I think it's important to keep our brothers and sisters in mind too. What does piss me off, though, is the way the media in general.. like CNN... Fox.. The always say "what's next"? Biggest school shooting so far.. most tragic event so far.. Like they're daring some other psychotic nut job to outdo it.

Retired turnout and other gear needed
Chief1C replied to fireemsworld1's topic in General EMS Discussion
Gonna need more info, publicly posted than that. Even old, ready to retire stuff has value. Except turnout gear. We destroy old gear, it serves a purpose, or it doesn't. When it can no longer serve a purpose, its not safe to be used even second hand. Try your local emergency management agency. General fire safety for the public and children should involve developing a plan of escape, and how to contact emergency services. Not teaching them how to fight the fire. -
I have a deeply personal story, in relation to what would become an unsecured body, bouncing around, and causing damage. I would honestly, probably start crying if I recalled the whole incident. What sticks out the most in my mind during the 1hr+ extrication of a victim. I asked asked a driver who was secured, "What did you hit your head on". The driver stated: "her head". Passenger was sleeping in the back seat, ended up essentially crushing every bone, head to lower legs, crumpled up between the dash and front pass. seat. I knew her my whole life, sad, worst part about being "smal town". There were other elements of the accident, the other vehicle, which made it a very difficult run. In sixteen years, it was the worst accident I've ever tended to, even so many years later, I'm still not open to put that on the WWW.

Now I want to see that PSA, in terms of him not wearing the belt, flying off the stool, and through the TV or something.

Making Sense of Colors and Shapes in the Toilet

The taste of urine? Ohhhh that is so gross... and #6, Black. Go stomach ulcers! -
I admit.. I gave up on Chicago Fire after the kid with the chest issue. I didn't watch a single episode. Then, two weeks ago, I came down with the flu, which I still have.... EVEN AFTER I HAD THE GODDAMN FLU SHOT. Just Sayin.... So I'm flipping through the "on demand" menu of my digital cable service, and there's either Family Guy, or Chicago Fire that I hadn't watched. So, naturally, I watched Family Guy. Then... yanno.. It was down to Chicago Fire. So, I watched all of them. Then I watched it on TV. Now, I just can't wait till the next episode. Maybe my lack of response to prolly a pretty high fever, caused brain damage? On that note. Bed.
