  1. To be fair, I think if my daughter told me she had an 18 year-old boyfriend, we might have a "disagreement" about it as well.
  2. I think he means one of these....
  3. Yes, we have a job to do, yes, we will occasionally get hurt doing it despite our best efforts. That said, most municipalities have ordinances requiring homeowners to keep their sidewalks clear of snow and ice to prevent this type of scenario. Ordinary citizens who slip and fall on ice on your steps could sue your homeowner's insurance for damages. My mother once slipped on a 4 inch square patch of ice at the front door to a Shaw's supermarket, went down face-first (my brother, 6 or so at the time, almost went down with her), and got a concussion. She could've owned the store had she been the litigious type, and the manager knew it. He was practically shaking as they filled out paperwork, and tried very hard to get mom to let him call 911 for her, despite her refusals (damn nurses, always thinking they know best ). Why does the fact that we got hurt on the job and not on our own time relieve the homeowner from the responsibility they have to keep their property clear of ice?
  4. Occasionally, at my 911 job we will arrange private ambulance transportation for 911 callers whose medical complaint should be evaluated at an ER, and should probably (cya, basically) be transported by ambulance, but who we feel do not require emergency transport. We stay with the patient until the private crew arrives, and provide them with a complete oral report; by the time they get there I can usually get the written done as well. They sign my report as having received the patient, and get the carbon copy to refer to and transfer with the patient.
  5. NR means nothing in MA. Several of the privates have payscales in their websites. Fallon I know for sure does, and they're on the lower end to give you some perspective. I'm surprised nobody mentioned AMR. Not that they're the be-all and end-all by any means, but they are here in force and do have a not-insignificant amount of 911 contracts. This may also be of assistance: http://www.firenews.org/ambulance.html. All known private EMS contracts in Massachusetts. If you're willing to work and/or live outside of the city itself, Trinity Ambulance has an interesting setup in Lowell. Very nice looking BLS transporting ambulances with ALS non-transport provided by the local hospital- ie, you're not just chauffeuring a medic all day. Lowell is kind of a pit of a city- not where you'd want to live, but some great experience to be had, especially in a system where it seems like you'd actually get to do something. Seems like a lot of shootings and stabbings happen there for a city it's size, and they're just far enough from Boston that calling MedFlight is not infrequent. I also have a friend at Professional, rookie medic, he's very happy there. I don't know how it is for Basics. They have their own medic school which is getting very good reviews, and reserve a good chunk of the class for their own employees every year.
  6. Comeback fail
  7. Pretty much fire-ems in general, isn't it?
  8. I weep for the future.
  9. I blame, if not the Clinton Administration itself, then certainly things that happened during that period of time, his/their fault or otherwise. Republicans would probably point to actions of the Administration (and probably the influence of Hillary) as creating an acrimonious relationship with Republicans. Democrats would be quick to harp on the "Republican Revolution" in 1994, with the coming of Newt Gingrich et al as being responsible for the infighting. Democrats view the Republican-led impeachment of Clinton as petty and unnecessary, but at the same time could easily be themselves accused of spending the next 10 years exacting revenge for it- ESPECIALLY after Gore lost the 2000 election. THAT disaster REALLY put the kabosh on any chances for reconciliation. The bad blood resulting from 2000- an election that shouldn't have been close, considering the Democrats were running the incumbent VP of the most popular Democrat since JFK- is STILL affecting government today. Democrats blame everybody but themselves for that one, and when they lost again in 2004- failing to unseat an unpopular President who started an unpopular war- it solidified the phenomenon currently known in conservative circles as Bush Derangement Syndrome. BDS is what you see almost every day today. Democrats blaming Bush for every bad thing that's happened since January 2001- 9/11, Iraq, the economy, global warming, the Jonas Brothers, you name it. And they'll ride it for generations to come. But as we know, for every action there is a reaction. BDS is going to have its reaction in The One's administration.
  10. N95s are on the list of supplies all hospital are required to restock us with if used. Not that I've ever been fitted for one.
  11. EMS providers are not part of the license verification system sparky linked you to. Yes, "Emergency Medical Services" is an option on the dropdown list, but you won't find anyone there, licensed or not. Entering the name and selecting "All" won't work either. Best bet is to contact the Division of EMS- 401-222-2401.
  12. Because that's how clueless they are.
  13. Or you could ask somebody at the Nevada Department of Health.
  14. It doesn't bother you at all that these are the kinds of people Obama chooses to surround himself with? What a shock that the Obama Administration's Military Affairs chief would turn out to be a dumbass.
  15. Worse fail: it's been that way for QUITE a while. I think RIDOH dc'd the state exam in favor of NR back in.... gosh, probably 2000 or earlier from what I'm told from people in the area, Paramedic longer than that.
  16. You think he's a great President because he got mad? The guy resigned. Obama did nothing, great or otherwise. Even assuming Obama had no knowledge of the flyover, it doesn't bother you that these are the people he hires to run your government? Let's face facts- you think he's a great President because he reads [a Teleprompter] well, and because that's the way his fans in the media (80% Democrats) packaged him. You couldn't be more gullible.
  17. What does voting "present" in the Illinois legistlature "prepare" one for? You can't claim the US senate "prepared" him for anything, since he didn't even serve one term. His whole "career in public service" was spent trying to get to the next job. "Community organizer" gets him into the IL Senate, which got him into the US Senate, which got him in front of a teleprompter at the 2004 DNC, which got him into the White House. People like that shouldn't be trusted in general, nevermind with the Big Red Button. Or the economy, or healthcare, or....
  18. Go ahead. Quote one of us saying anything like that. The medics in question didn't even DO that. You're the one who said he'd RMA somebody lying in the street. Waa. If you're going to be all passive-aggressive and emo, do it somewhere else.
  19. Incorrect for RI. NREMT required for initial licensure as EMT-B, not required to maintain NREMT-B. NREMT-P required for licensure as EMT-P, maintaining NREMT-P is required. (Ps- you finally learned how to spell Massachusetts, but forgot Illinois??? :P )
  20. (Click to view this embedded page in a new window) (Click to view this embedded page in a new window) Unwelcome start to their romantic weekend "Interactive graphic" According to the Green Line Crash Twitter page, Government Center is STILL shut down.
  21. MA is non-Registry; I can't see OEMS giving you a go to take their test however. That would require higher brain functions.
  22. Your posts are an example of why, every once in a while, this place drives me up a wall. It's letter of the law or nothing with some of you. You must be a real blast to work with. If we don't get ourselves some good press, nobody else is going to. I have no problem at all with an attaboy to these guys if it engenders some goodwill to their service and EMS in general. For the record, insinuating that they neglected their patient to serve the dog would be a personal insult were it my call. That's a pretty big leap to take considering you weren't there. You've never seen a fire department pull a horse or cow out of a mudhole? Dog off of ice/out of water? Happens almost frequently around here.
  23. Where are you sticking them that C diff. is an issue??
  24. His control is fine, he just needs to upgrade the caliber so the target is put down instead of retaining the ability to shoot back, run away, and die tired down the block.
  25. Normally I'd say finish what you started, you've come this far. It's what I did when I realized 75% through a BA that I didn't actually want to be a lawyer. But I'd invested too much of my life to quit, and quittings not really somethjng I try to do anyway. So I finished. That said, if finishing doesn't seem to be an option (ie checm class), I think I'd have to seriously re-evaluate things. The definition of insanity, after all, is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.
