  1. That is always the claim when fire trys to take over EMS. Yet the systems I am aware of soon find out that they are losing money. One small town I am aware of used to pay $100000 a year to a private company. Well the city council saw the $1000 they billed the 800 patients they had per year. The council multiplied the $1000 X 800 and were like we'll make big money if we take over. They took over. Now they are in the negative on EMS over $250000 a year. They never took into account that few pay. And that government reimbursement is very small amount. Bet the fire union will fail to provide these possibilitys to them.
  2. When we are to scared or embarrased to check patients completely are we negligent if we miss something?
  3. I still see very few services that use the over the shoulder straps that have come with all new cots for years. It is sad that to save a few seconds we place patients at risk for more injury or death.
  4. Sadly in my area most service wear those cheap tees. Looks very non-professional. At least polos look nice.
  5. If you have nothing productive to add please do not attack. I choose to revisit as no law was really ever shown as to transport every caller. You are welcome to not open my posts if you find them non productive. Thank you.
  6. I assure you the public would not understand it as humor. If they did they would still it was wrong. Again I implore you to think before you type so as not to harm either your fire profession or my EMS profession. We actually had a incident were some of the forum humor was qouted and used out of context. It really looked bad on the profession. I do not remember if it was this site or another professional site I frequent. Can you imagine the public outcry if the Memphis news found your post? So please for you , your department and our two professions think before you type. I do not want anyone to lose a job.
  7. "Lt. Robert Kramer Engine Co. 34-A Memphis FIRE 901-494-9437 " I am sure your citizens will enjoy that you as a leader of their emergency system have chosen to use your place of employment for sexual exploration. Please think before you type. What you say here not only can come back to haunt you, your department, but also both the fire and the EMS professions.
  8. Excellent points. People expect that medical professionals will be looking, listening, touching. So if you don't do a complete exam of your patient it is your negligence if you miss something.
  9. "He said he plans to ask the judge to dismiss the lawsuit because Nebraska law makes first responders and emergency personnel immune from civil liability unless they engage in gross negligence or willful and wanton conduct. " I would say that is gross negligence if he stuck the hand vac into her mouth with the cap still in place. In my old volly bag I have one of those devices and that cap is obvious. So if he failed to remove it his actions may have expedited her death. Since she was already being worked when he arrived she probably would not have made it, but w/o an airway no way she could. Now in his defense perhaps the family had a suction device and they may have left the cap on. I have dealt with patients with similar long term ailments and the family had suction devices. So if his defense attorney is smart he'll go that possibility rather than making like she was dead already. If I was on the jury and you said she was dead already I would then think you were scum for abusing a corpse.
  10. I understand where you are coming from but that protocol you quoted does not say you can not deny transport to a non emergent patient. To me it only says that if they are going by ambulance to the hospital they can choose. I work, now only part time, where we regularly deny transport and we also treat on scene and then deny transport. But most say that it is required to transport all callers. So far I have not seen in writing a law stating that. Even where I currently work full time we are told verbally we can not deny transport but there is not even anything in protocols that says that. I have found in many protocols and state rules/laws statements such as you posted that patient have right to when reasonable request a hospital, but have yet to find you must transport all callers or you may not deny transport even when there is nothing wrong if caller requests transport.
  11. Actually those comments only deal with patients choice of hospital to be transported to. It does not say all callers must be transported. Not trying to argue just saying. I really want to see a law that says you must transport all callers whether they have a true emergency or not.
  12. So are we all properly securing patients now?
  13. Still a timely discussion based on some of the debates going now.
  14. Are there actually state laws that say you must transport all callers even when they really do not need the ambulance? Proof please. I sure like telling patients no when they can safely go private car to ER or their own doctor.
  15. Anyone find any of theses cases?
  16. They're handy to use when sitting around chatting. Much more comfortable dontcha know.
  17. I like the idea of being able to treat and release rather than transport. Why not treat and aminister enough meds to get them to the next business day to follow up with their regular doctor? I think this will lead to higher education required. Higher pay for added responsibilty. A cut back on transports, making ambulances more quicly back in service for real emergencys. Regardless of how its set up we must have the right to deny transport to those that are non emergent. If you do not have enough education and common sense to determine if it is a true emergency you need to get out of my profession.
  18. Here's an in depth airway course, especially with the cadaver lab. http://www.slamairway.com/id77.html
  19. Don't worry Dwayne, we would never live there, but we're glad to help by keeping all of Colorado and New Mexico afloat with our oil riches. Just remember what ever we destroy is another persons job to repair. Wow wages are cheap. I make more than that as an intermediate. As soon as I get my paramedic I move up to near $20/hr plus great benefits.
  20. LOL. I've had a few topics like that. Thanks. Wish it were more current but better than nothing.
  21. JEMS says they estimate that there are 225,000+ currently certified paramedics in the USA. How many in each state though? Is there a site that breaks it down? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
