Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I was in high school I had a high enough avg I did not need to take the final exam to pass. I turned it in with just my name. The teacher asked me out to the hall. Busted my butt with the board. Handed me my exam, told me sit down and do it. He told me he had spoken with my dad and they agreed that if I did not score at least a 90 on the exam I could come back next year and retake the whole class again since I liked it so much. I scored over 90, thankfully. School sounds easy now days.

Worried? Will Your City, County, Private, EMS Job Survive?
spenac replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
We have to keep watch on the markets. Many agencies have funds tied to the markets. We also have to watch foreclosures, because those that get money from taxes will lose 2 ways. Foreclosed properties will have no one paying taxes. Empty houses also mean property values will drop, thus the amount collected from those that pay will be less. That is just two ways your check could come into question. So who gets cut? At some point all non required services will start feeling the pinch, so goodbye EMS and Fire. -

Really? Where did you get that idea? There are fire departments that have had major cuts as well and they are not a required service either in most areas. So now do you feel safe because your fire based? -

Here is one example that shows why we need EMS to become a required service. "County Ambulance Service Faces Uncertain Future 7/10/2008 The Coleman County Medical Center Board of Directors have voted unanimously to discontinue providing ambulance service October 1, 2008. However, if county residents can come together to find a solution to make the ambulance service operate on at least a break-even basis, the hospital is willing to continue offering ambulance service. Coleman County Medical Center has initiated a committee, made up of county residents, charged with the task of finding a solution to the problem. By law, the hospital is not required to provide ambulance service. You can read an Attorney General opinion on the matter by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: http://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/opinio.../htm/ga0472.htm " They knew it was not required and they used it as leverage. It is my understanding they are still open for business though. But who knows next time they may follow through on the threat. -
So do any of you worry that with the economy and the fact that EMS is not a required service that services will start closing or at least shrinking? I have seen many reports in the news around the nation of citys, countys, etc unable to pay bills. In my county they just approved an 18% tax hike, but that will not help till next year and right now they have run out of money. The services in my county are not county run but the county does contribute to keeping them open. Will the two services in my county be able to stay open w/o county help? Who knows, but it is just is one illustration of what is happening. Keep in mind that even government agencies are unable to find financing to help them thru troubled times as well right now.

Maybe he meant new info to him if it was his first class. It sounds like he found like most of us that the card courses just do not take enough time to really go into much detail. :dontknow:

I stated that would make a good discussion in chat. What was wrong with that? Wouldn't that be a better discussion in chat than some of the crap people bring up? I did avoid my usual direct statements of welcome to chat etc even though it was obvious as that was what this poster wanted. I apologize for what you took as a rules violation and as my ignoring your warnings.

I let my NR expire as I too am close to completing my Paramedic. Texas recognizes but does not require NR to maintain state certification. Now once I get my NR Paramedic I plan to work to keep it. I plan to keep it even if I leave EMS as a profession. When I closed my company I still do my continuing education hours and pay my license fees because it would almost be impossible to get my licenses back if I let them go. I figure we never know when things could change and better to keep all options open.

Hang tough. Stick to what you know is right. Act confident at all times, not paragod attitude, but still a positive attitude. Take advice with a grain of salt as some advice my come from poorly educated paramedics.

How true a small chance is better than no chance. Now I see no need to load a dead person and do rolling CPR. If you do not get pulse back on scene, call the funeral home rather than risk yours and the publics lives rushing a dead body to the ER.

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If we were actually educated professionals we would be able to demand and receive better compensation. There would be fewer people competing for the jobs thus driving up our bargaining powers. Also all those alphabet courses equal no real education.

As an EMT-I and previously an EMT-B and even an ECA (FR) I have to agree that in a perfect world there would always be 2 highly educated paramedics (not diploma mill medics ) on every ambulance. I do agree this would ensure the best care possible. While I am very experienced and yes I worked in a very aggressive system where I did more than many Paramedics I realize that if I had been a Paramedic with more education and understanding there would have been better outcomes for my patients. Why did I stay at lower levels so long? First I never expected EMS to become my profession. Then as I realized I really enjoyed it I still had the problem of no classes for Paramedic closer than 250 miles from home. As a family man, and family always has and always will come first, I could not quit working and leave to go to school. Thankfully I found a program that my family and me agreed would allow me to advance to Paramedic level. As I have progressed and even now nearing completion of it I realize though that much of my "experience" actually has made my education harder to attain. I have also seen just how little I actually knew, and actually now am scared of many of the procedures I have been doing for years because I more fully understand what is involved. I do highly encourage all to go on to paramedic as soon as possible and in a perfect world I hope to see the lower levels done away with completely or at least limited to the time required to get a high quality Paramedic education. Am I arrogant, cocky, etc? Yes to an extent. I feel you need some of those qualitys to be the best. But I think it still should be balanced, it should not come across as stepping on the feelings of others. Here on the forums though it does get frustrating trying to reason with people and at times most lower and upper level posters have just gone point blank with their answer rather than just trying to continue to reason. I do apologize if you mistake my zeal for more education in EMS as bashing. I just want what is best for the patients and common sense would indicate that more education would produce better care. As a human I have made many mistakes and yes I have had lower and advanced levels bring up points that have led to better patient outcomes and I have done the same so I guess technically I could say I have saved basics, intermediates, paramedics, nurses, and doctors before. But there is no getting around the fact that a higher educated person is more likely to help you avoid making a mistake than a person with less education. So theres my thoughts as a lower level provider.

ArkansasEMT72556 the above was my first comment on this topic. I raised many questions that really needed to be considered. Please do not take offense to comments that are made. We dissect the material and "facts" that we have available to us to help us avoid a bad situation. Thank you for being brave and coming forward. We look forward to your input on this topic as well as the others here on the forum.

The problem of exceeding scope of practice is a fine line. For me at my old job I did things as an EMT-I that even the Paramedics are not allowed at my current full time job.
-
As a non fire 911 EMT-I I made over $50000 a year only working 10-12 days a month.

You can post anything here as long as it agrees with my opinion.

Ruff wish you could find a way to keep it. Just think after you have made all the money at your real job you could volly as a paramedic at the local fire dept. That would give your life real purpose as we know that vollys are more dedicated.
