  1. Welcome to the city.

  2. One should feel the vein more than see it. In theory you should be able to start an IV in a dark room. I found that while doing my assessment I will feel for veins while talking to patient and not looking. When I feel a good vein then I will look but in fact could do w/o looking. Sometimes because knowing where the veins should be I can palpate a good one yet not see it and that is where I go. I leave the AC for last resort in most patients. The forearm has one of the straightest veins, limited valves, is not positional, and it is usually big but is hidden in many patients so you will have to rely on touch not sight. I have found when I rely on my eyes to find the vein I miss more often. Kind of like Dust said don't be easy just place it. Remember it doesn't hurt you and if they need an IV the brief pain they have is a justified means to an end.
  3. Well did they kick you out of the Texas site so you decided to come back and cause trouble here? Glad your back you old bag of dust. Most of the time I enjoyed arguing with you even if on occasion I might and I emphasize might have been wrong. Sorry to hear life still been rough but maybe your old buddy ruff can help brighten your day. The old goat herder ( AK ) still rears his ugly head in here at times. The guy you mentored, Dwayne, still needs some more lessons in how to be a rude jerk w/o resorting to personal attacks but he is getting better at it. Your friend crotchity needs someone to help fight the good fight that minorities are mistreated. And well you see where I am going, basically we all missed having a trouble maker like you around here. Welcome back mi amigo.
  4. Sadly thats the only one that really seems fun but it also seems to be the only one that could have legal issues attached to it.
  5. You have no way of knowing if your friend delivered your response. I can't believe I am getting anywhere near agreeing with one of the posters above but owners and EMS managers talk. You get one mad and while officially you are hireable, unofficially you are not hireable. Showing you are man or woman enough to walk in might get you some respect and so when they talk you might become someone that is sought after for hiring. In EMS jobs are often gotten because of who you know not what you know.
  6. Wasn't there about 20 other names as well?
  7. Seems someone got their undies in a wad and gave me a negative. Thank you very much. Wendy spoke very well OP to the benefits of going the degree way. Sometimes as a famous qoute says "out of the mouths of babes". Based on age she is a baby compared to many of us old farts here, but often she brings reason to the discussions or even clarifies what others have said in a much more professional way.
  8. Is it possible that they wanted you to experience what it feels like to labeled with a stereo type? Perhaps later it will be used to discuss the value of not being stuck with preconcieved ideals but still be willing/able to adapt to your patients actual beliefs.
  9. You are so full of yourself it is not worth my effort or time to respond more than once to your attacks. You make it clear that you try to belittle anyone that presents any opinion that is different than yours. Have a great day. Now back on track with the OP. As you see this is a hot button issue. I have met some darn good medics from the 12 weeks schools but they are the rare exception. I have met some worthless lazy piece of crap medics from the 2 year schools though as well. Any education you seek will require you to be dedicated and focused. You must put forth the effort and not settle for the basic text book answer. If it turns out your school or professors are lousy you will have to put in the effort to make yourself the best possible. You will have to weigh the short term as well as the long term benefits. Only you know your financial situation as to what you can or can not do at this time. People will spout off usless BS like I was able to do the 4 year degree while raising 20 kids and walking uphill both ways barefoot and naked in the snow with packs of wolves biting my rear so everyone should be able to. Don't waste your time with them. I encourage you to get the degree if possible as stated as it can transfer to other degrees. Transfering does not mean leaving EMS it means you have reached for more. Some blindly seem to think if you transfer your degree credits you can not continue in EMS. They are wrong. Some choose to get their RN, CRNA, and other degrees yet remain working in EMS. Others get their EMS degree then stop the education process entirely, those are the medics that scare me. No matter which route to Paramedic youj choose, certification must only be a beginning to your education if you are truly going to be any good.
  10. At least I have an occassional intelligent statement and at that they are origional rather than parroting crap you have copied from others. If you read the statement you so much chose to degrade me for you would see that I said they would be better for getting the degree. But I was also bluntly honest that EMS sucks so bad that no matter which way educated you will not be able to do anything to your patients in most services. If you are being honest you will have to agree with my opinion on that. So when you pull your head out from trying to kiss your own rear start posting something of value w/o including attacks on others.
  11. You know its going to be a bad day in EMS when you get handed the keys to the drugs and the ambulance and a tone goes off.
  12. What do you call the 2 year doctor? Doctor. What do you call the 8 year doctor? Doctor. Honestly with the restrictions on Paramedics in most places really as far as how much damage vs good you can do the patient not much difference. Now as to what is best for your personal developement go for the degree. Plus then at aleast it will transfer if you decide to go into another field later in life.
  13. Welcome to the city. Take everything read here with a grain of salt. Well except mine as I'm always right.
  14. You and I wake up in a psychiatric ward together. Using 4 words, what would you say to me? Note: If you comment, you must copy and paste this to your status, so I may comment on yours as well..

  15. Welcome back. Did you miss me?
  16. Before spending money and time contact the state and make sure you can be certified. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/emstraumasystems/default.shtm
  17. Ok women is obese. If I understand what was written she was placed supine. Thank about what happens with all that adipose material. What does it put pressure against? _________ . Which in turn puts pressure on__________, which leads ultimately to a lower spo2 reading. What could you have tried that might have changed the spo2 w/o adding o2? As to pain management well not being there it is hard to say whether right or wrong but I will say it seems pain management by EMS needs great improvement.
  18. If I make a mistake I appreciate the correction so all can get accurate info. I do find often though when people keep asking for a deeper explanation they are jumping ahead of where the class as a whole is which can lead to confusion. So I at times have to stop the question and mention that we will get into that information at a later date. As others mentioned the instructor has to work hard to keep the class on track so all can benefit.
  19. If not required by your state no point in keeping it unless already a Paramedic. Many states at the lower levels even with NR require classes etc in their states so not any real benefit. At Paramedic level many states allow you to pay the fee and you become a Paramedic in that state. So once you get Paramedic keep your NR status even if not required.
  20. No they were transporting grocerys to feed the crew, that is much different than transporting a live animal. Really not sure why you did not have the crew hang the deer from the grab bar and start skinning and quartering it on the way to the station. The only problem with a service animal is if the patient becomes unresponsive and the dog interprets your actions in treating as threatening to its owner they may become aggressive. Animals no matter how well trained still go by instinct. That said service animal in most cases should be no problem.
  21. If you are serious you should call them. But here is some info on the area. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2007/snapshots/PL4829000.html http://www.muninetguide.com/states/texas/garland/
  22. Post # 17 of this topic I supplied the link.
  23. http://www.buyemp.com/category/Narcotics-Class-II.html Not enough cost difference to justify one over the other. They are cheap. In fact when stolen (if it were not for the control status)cost value would be misdemeanor.
