  3. More shocked they allowed that dirty word spenac on there.
  4. Not all volly services are staffed with just basics. I started out as a volly and worked with a couple of the most knowledgable paramedics I have ever met in all the years since. That service actually carried themselves better than many professional services. The biggest problem I have with volly services is they drag down wages. EMS is not a required service and will not be so as long as people are willing to do it for free. We need to get past this so EMS can advance. We need to see EMS become required which will benefit all citizens nationwide. Once it is required funds will become available that will help all EMS in the USA to advance with education, wages, etc.

  6. I need to win a set. Starving student, loyal lifelong Cowboy fan. Painful loss Sunday. Now no point to watch the superbowl other than new commercials.
  7. So Doc are you going to get us students a special rate on the revised books? Look forward to seeing the new set, will still be in school so will try to afford them so I get the best and most current education possible.
  8. Hey doc glad to hear of your personal interest. What I have found is that I need all 3 paramedic books plus other specialty books. This allows me to compare and maybe get it worded slightly differently so it makes sense and sinks into my hard head.

Wow this topic really has become unprofessional. For a while it was all in fun. Now it has become like so many topics here on the city a chance to bash all that express different opinions or try and make a joke.
  10. There have been some discussions but I think they would focus on just one field. Some areas I have seen Paramedics work are hospitals, company safety officers, oilfield first aid and safety. Sure there maybe others but like so many other discussions come back to the low education really limits the possibilities.
  11. Sorry must have double clicked.

  19. Seems your way to young to already be burned out. Is it school that you need a break from or have you actually learned enough about EMS that you are beginning to doubt this is the profession for you?

  22. Education is key if EMS is to advance. This was driven home the other day when a paramedic that makes Dust look like a youngster was helping me with my paramedic class. I was not getting a point. He said check this out, as he pulled a brand new book out of his back pack. He had bought another book to make sure he was staying up with the latest understanding. He is not content with the I'm a paramedic already mentality that so many seem to have. He wants to remain the best. He has an awesome library and he has studied all of them. He is one of the few experienced paramedics that I have found that actually has a clue about the in depth education my school is giving me. Many paramedics tell me I have never heard that term, that procedure, etc so you probably really don't need it. He usually takes me aside draws a diagram, gets out equipment, breaks out a book, etc to help me. I wish more in our field were not satisfied with the status quo. There is no degree program in my area nor is there even a paramedic course in my area. I travel more than 450 miles one way for hands on days. Thankfully the majority of the book part is available online. Maybe after I am certified there will be something available to continue education in my area.
  23. Dude stop the personal attacks. If you disagree fine, state your "facts" but don't attack. Comments like yours above do not build any credibility to the discussion.

  25. Almost impossible to get figures that are accurate. Most states just have a list of certifications but not a break down of those that are paid/volly/or not active. Some states actually never delete you. So once certified always certified. My guess would be that there are more active paid paramedics than volunteer paramedics. There is no justification for a volly system any longer. I have seen first hand a service that averages only 18 calls a year go paid. They now have a 24 hour 365 day a year paid staff with a paramedic on board all shifts. It can be done if people get off the crapper and quit giving it away for free. I was a firm proponent of denying transport but recently I have seen so many idiotic statements from and by people on here and in the news that I really doubt most are educated enough to even deny transport to somebody that just says they want a ride to lunch.
