should we do away with EMT certification
spenac replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
I vote Ruff and Dust. -
Ruff d-stick must be done to rule out diabetic cause. Hand drop often. Sternal rub to establish if alert to painful stimuli. I have run dull side of shears on bottom of feet to see if any reaction. I knew a female paramedic that would do a Texas titty twister to test for faking male and female patients.

what EMT-Bs should know, outside the textbook
spenac replied to Riblett's topic in Education and Training
Emphasize that they are only receiving a very basic education and to provide the patients with the best of care they need to continue on to paramedic. They need to understand that they must always be learning or they are hurting patients and the profession. -
should we do away with EMT certification
spenac replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
I say we set a date of Jan 1, 2010 to have no one besides paramedics on ambulances. This allows all that want to continue in EMS to get paramedic license. Then start a massive ad campaign letting public know who we are and what we do. -
AK I'm with you. Let them stay quite. Makes the ride more pleasant. When sure they are faking I tell the patient I know you are faking and then I buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Bad time for Fla firefighter wanna be's
spenac replied to boeingb13's topic in General EMS Discussion
Well I live as far south as you can go w/o being in Mexico and we have separate services. The fat from fire needs to be cut. Where is the biggest need? EMS. Fire is barely an issue anymore, homes/businesses are all required to meet standards that lower fire risk. Combine that with fire prevention education and fire has basically put themselves out of the fire business. Really considering how few fires FF actually work compared to how many extrications and lifting assists maybe we should even change it to extrication service instead of fire service, become known as extrication specialists rather than fire fighters. We'll let you keep the extrication equipment because we need to focus on medicine. You can not be the best in multiple fields. Choose one and be the best. Focus on whats best for our medical profession and thus our patients. Cut the fire fat. -

Your welcome. Thank you for intelligent, factual proof of the falsehood of needing volunteer EMS. -
Can first responder units start IV locks?
spenac replied to Vicki Johnson's topic in General EMS Discussion
akroeze wrote the following and it just so fit here I had to paste it. "FYI: I worked at a base that only had a call volume in 2006 of 217 calls. Another base in the same service had a call volume of 120 for the year. Another base had a call volume of 80 for the year. The absolute BUSIEST base in the entire service of 14 bases in the service had a call volume of 701 in 2006 and it was near double the next busiest base. ALL of the bases, from the 80/year to the 701/year had fully paid crews at them. By the way, our wage as a PT employee was $27.16/hr plus 14% in lieu of benefits. Care to continue saying it is not possible to have a paid staff at all times?" Thanks akroeze for a great amount of proof that no service is to small to be paid. Link that statement was made in: http://www.emtcity.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=147248#147248 See also: http://www.emtcity.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.ph...32&start=30 -
It appears to me that many places call all involved with EMS paramedics. Then they add letters to that to designate level. Dealing with many non-English speaking people from Mexico there is no simple way to explain EMT, they only have paramedics even though many only have first responder education. It takes a 20 minute discussion to make it as clear as mud. To save time the accepted method for EMT-B is to say "Soy un paramedico básico" ( intermediate replace with intermedio )or in english "I am a basic paramedic". I really don't know in the USA how we get EMT vs paramedic anyway. All are EMT's. Its EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P plus all the other alphabets that are added.

Wrong answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The injury happened the day before being seen by the first responder according to some of the reports. What happens to the appearance of an injury to the head hours later? It looks worse. This provider was not smart enough to understand this. This provider broke the law by forces his way into the house to check on a child w/o parental consent and should go to jail. This provider was wrong. Then a non medically trained person went to see the child and did the same thing panicked because of how ugly it looks. The doctor found nothing wrong and sent the kid right back home. Why do we immediately assume the parent is bad because he says no to an undereducated first responder? This gentleman was a military medic and was probably better educated than the first responder and obviously knew enough to know it was nothing. The second amendment does clearly give the right to own guns. In fact the USA was founded on the idea of not having government interference. Why did the colonys kick the brits butts? Because they were tired of the government butting in where it did not belong. Now look the government came and kidnapped this child and traumatized the whole family. For those that do not know the second amendment here it is. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." What part of the people having the right to have guns and use them for defense do you not understand?

New Contest - running until Jan 31
spenac replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
Looks like I will miss out on this contest. School and work have been to hectic to do serious research. Thank You very much for this contest. -
This case based on what has been said by eye witnesses was just a pissing match. The first responder saw the kid the day after the injury. The first responder got into an argument and got feelings hurt. Called child services and convinced them child was in danger. I'm all for protecting those that can't protect themselves but this whole incident crossed the line big time. SWAT really endangered and probably will cause these kids nightmares forever. Have you ever stared down the barrel of a gun? It stays with you. I mentioned the other danger of swat entry heres the link: http://www.emtcity.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.ph...sc&start=15

In Your Opinion, What Is Holding USA EMS Back?
spenac replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
When I started this thread being forced to act as a Taxi was one of the biggest things holding us back. Since many sunrises and sunsets have passed I think as Dust basically says the whole thing is busted. Shut it all down. We have way to many idiots in the field. -
The first responder that forced their way into the house needs to lose their job. Even if you suspect abuse you are not a cop and have no business making a raid and trying to force care. This confirms to me to many idiots have patches and should not be allowed in EMS. I may have to cave on my opinion that EMS should be allowed to deny transports as this idiot has no business deciding anything.

Why does it suck that parents can chose what treatment if any for their children? No one will tell me how to raise my kids or what treatments. That is not the governments business. The courts have ruled numerous times it is the parents right to choose type of care. It is just like me getting injured if I tell you no I don't want treatment you have no right to touch me. This pisses me off. Nobody has the right to force unwanted medical care. Next you'll tell me that swat raided a house because parents took the kids to a different church. Things are out of hand. Was there any previous reports of neglect or abuse? Just seeing an injury and being told no treatment wanted is not grounds to go to child services. And definitely not for SWAT. See thread from a few months back for discussion of what could have happened with swat entry. I suspect somebody just hit the lottery when they hire a lawyer and sue everybody involved.

First responders L&S on POV insurance requirements
spenac replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
AMEN -
Start the class. EMT-B is just a slightly advanced first aid course. When finished with it and high school immediately go to paramedic school. Work on being a professional at all times including when posting here. Grammar and spelling are important parts of our job. You may need to make notes to remind you to focus on your studies. Please work hard, education is very important. Read other topics on this site for more ideas. Let us know if we can help.

Bad time for Fla firefighter wanna be's
spenac replied to boeingb13's topic in General EMS Discussion
Just another reason fire should not have EMS. EMS should be seperatly funded required service. People will need emergency medical care at some point. Most of us will never have a fire. Money has been wasted on keeping fire equiped. Time to reform the system and put money where its needed ( EMS) and cut the fat (fire). -
Even when you run L&S it doesn't mean run like a bat out of hell. Slow down and stay alive.
