  1. Never swat. Roll up tight Jab hard at the adams apple. But be advised could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon or murder if they do die. If you have more time can make a spear out of newspaper.
  2. I wish you a speedy, quick, healthy, and very messy delivery very soon.
  3. Honestly in a perfect world I see 16-22 only allowed as third riders. Why. To help get experience, to hopefully get a little more maturity. I might even consider 14 year old ride alongs to get young people interested enough in our profession so that they will be willing to attent the much more extensive education program I have established in my perfect world.
  4. Again let the cops take them into custody. While they are restrained I will do an EMS evaluation. If not a medical/trauma emergency behind the behavior cops can take them. If we take them they will be restrained and a cop will go with us.
  5. Newspaper is also a great self defense weapon.
  6. Lets get ready to rrrrrrrrruuuuummmmbbbbbbblllllllleeeeee. In this corner a newbie with a sexist comment vs we'll see how many jump in.
  7. I hate to think it but I think we just a got a quick 3 poster to chat. If not I would like to hear his intelligent in depth explanation of his point of view.
  8. Sounds like you partner lives by the philosophy that he doesn't have to faster than the bear (bad guy, EDP, etc), he just has to run faster than you.
  9. Just a side point based on cause of this wreck. Everybody please pay attention, be safe over the holidays. Lots of idiots out there driving drunk. And please if you are drinking no driving, we have no excuse we have seen the results. One drink is to many.
  10. I do not think that EMS should physically take down patient. That is police job, that is what they are trained for. After they have patient secure then we can check medical condition. I do not think all emotionally disturbed patients really need an ambulance to transport them. Often they need a mental health professional to evaluate them and police can transport them just as well as we can. If we transport a violent patient they must be in restraints and have law enforcement riding with us.
  11. Thank you for some clean fun.
  12. Sorry it was that or cry at the above post about volly=professionals. I agree anyone can act professional, but if you volly its your hobby not profession. I was a volly as well FF/EMS and acted very professional, but It was not my profession thus I was not a professional.
  13. I don't know why but when I read this I pictured Richard running dragging 2 sets of taser wires. Then as he was being brought down with the third it clicked he was running away from the EDP. My bad.
  14. Newbie coming in going straight to bed will find his/her butt out of a job. That does not fly, not even for the old timers. When all chores are done fine take a nap so if it gets busy your fresh. Newbies on top of chores really need to spend extra time learning the truck and the protocols not sleeping.
  15. Well I wasted time reading a person bragging about their being better than the rest of us. I am all for more books. It would be nice to see a collaboration of some of the people compiled into a text that addresses real EMS and where we want to see it in the future. The current textbooks Brady, Mosby, and AAOS when used together lead to a pretty good basic understanding. I have all 3 and can tell you I love parts of all of them and hate other parts. To be outstanding a student has to go out on their own and research subjects much more in depth, and honestly even if we created a fourth book would still need that additional research. Research is something that all professionals will be doing their entire career. Who knows maybe someday all students will be using SPENAC's Guide to denying transport paramedic book.
  16. Welcome to the site. Welcome to EMS.
  17. I agree that each person must be accountable for their actions. In this case drunk driver is most at fault. But the paramedics and perhaps the EMS there are at fault as well. If police officer was first responder maybe he has fault for not assisting victim. Where does blame end and begin? A question I have is why did the fire department not extricate? Even if dead she had to be removed for funeral home to take her. In my part of the world all bodys are removed so funeral home can come haul them away. Had she been extricated maybe more evidence of life would have been seen. But I am in small town America maybe not done that way in the city.
  18. Soy almirante. Now get to work sailor. I have not been in wreck but have been thrown arond with sudden braking, etc. Dislocated shoulder. This is why I want ambulances with crawl thru so I can knock the crap out the driver every time they do something stupid.
  19. Hazing to me brings up images of taping newbie to the flag pole naked. That does no good. As to not sitting in best chair any newbie should out of respect let everyone else sit first then take a seat from whats left. In my new job which I am an EMS vet compared to most I still do that even though some of the people have only just gotten card and hired prior to me. It is me showing respect to those that have been there longer. The cleaning of dishes again normally new guy cleans as the more experienced usually do the cooking. If new guy goes out on a limb and cooks then somebody else does dishes. I like the education received when newbie takes ambulance apart and puts it back up. Usually I sit with new person so I can answer questions as they may not understand when we need something or how the brand we use works. Biggest thing I say is while the new guy does a few extra chores they are also treated respectfully and as part of the team. I like sending new guy out thinking they are going to scrub ambulance by themselves then wait a minute or two and without a word start cleaning with them. If they ask why I'm there helping with their chores I tell them thats what partners do. Surprisingly how quickly they start becoming part of team.
  20. It has worked great so far, after 6 exams 97 avg on them. I find that almost always one of the 3 books will give more detail or have a picture or illustration that drives home what is being said. Personally I could not imagine trying to take paramedic w/o all 3 available. Took a lot of extra money but I bought 1 then a month or 2 later another, prior to starting course. It is weird that one book will take a subject and only give a small paragraph, then another book same point will be over 2 pages and have pics, guess each author looked at it differently. Hope this makes sense, no coffee yet this morning. You will also want like a thousand EKG books and all the alphabet books.
  21. Wow. I just looked second edition page 589 says same thing. Never heard of ambulance carrying it. I could see in disaster but for everyday use. Hey Docs help explain. Maybe just a bad question never corrected?
  22. I have through the years decided way to many times that nothing could be done, that a code should not be worked. In the back of my mind even when in rigor or cooked to a crisp I always think but what if. I always go back and check. On MCI after I triage, I re-triage. In my area if someone says somebodys dead, another EMS professional verifys. It is difficult to walk away during triage knowing a person is dieing. In San Antonio I just can not believe that they could not get another ambulance. Hell they had 2 with 4 paramedics why did they not have at least 2 of them check her. If what the officer said is true about breathing why not err on side of caution and load her and go. We haul 3 and 4 patients often here, they sound as if they can only have 1 patient per ambulance. It was cold so a peripheral pulse was not a good check. I hope more was done to check her. I am all for field termination of codes and not starting trauma codes, but apparently heart and lungs were still working unassisted. I feel for her family. I feel for the paramedics that must feel like hell with the what ifs. I hope this never happens to me or any of you.
  23. The problem with hazing was to many did not know where to draw the line. People got hurt even died. I do agree the newbie needs to earn their spot. Do the dishes. Clean the ambulance. Unstock/reStock the ambulance so they know it inside out. Learn the maps. Throw the trash. Get strapped on the cot and feel smooth ride and then drive the way so many young ones do and feel how rough it is for patient and crew. To many hazings though have nothing about EMS and really are of no benefit. I think you are speaking of the earning spot rather than hazing.
  24. Great site, thanks for costing me my job. I will never be able to get into the box again. Actually videos should serve as a wakeup call to just how unsafe we are in the ambulance. Maybe those that think it's great to run L&S and blow intersections will start slowing down and paying attention. Thanks for great site. Maybe admin could get OK to pemanent link.
  25. Haha you got beat up by a little girl. Just kidding. Those are the hardest. You know you need to defend but you don't want to hurt a child. Adults that are out there you feel for them but it is easier to deal with. Mental patients are a real challenge. Often in the ambulance nothing we can do for them. Kind of gives a helpless feeling. Glad you and the kid made it out more or less physically ok.
