Straight to Paramedic. I wasted way to much time at lower levels. Nothing I have done or learned in the field has benefitted my Paramedic class.

As far as equipment breaking, just had radio fall apart. About to use some medical duct tape ( white duct tape ) to hold it together. I've had other equipment break, but I've always been able to repair, improvise, or scream like a little girl in panic. Never lost a patient from failed equipment.

So tell us the breaking point of the product you make and what automatic back up it has. :twisted: Sorry just being mean, but do you replace it free? Do I have to wait to put my patient on oxygen till replacement shows up? :wink:

The question is really too broad. Physical attack can vary from spit on to having the hell beat out of you. Verbal attacks from direct in your face to quite behind back in a language they think you do not understand. You will see the range. Some on purpose, some unaware of their actions. But all in all most people are not going to attack you. I would put it other than verbal as a very very small percentage of your calls.

Just some advice. Keep the spare batterys at the station and run the battery down before replacing. Everytime placed in the charger is a new cycle and the batterys are only good for so many cycles. I knew of one service that kept the spare on a charger in the truck, everytime it was unplugged then replugged started a new cycle and they had to keep buying batteries. Once charger started being kept at station batteries have lasted. Best cot ever. Back saver.

Andy welcome to the site. Like I mentioned earlier we love passionate people, we especially love those that have the knowledge to back it with. I look forward to picking your brain, to reading your input on the various scenarios that get discussed. Sorry if I come across a little blunt at times, always well meaning.

Please take the advice others gave you. Look around, understand the views and we have all sorts of views. You are not the first to argue for us to be public servants like fire and law, but you will find many more here that want us to be medical professionals. Research and you will find discussions that will explain the difference. Please do not allow my ignoring your attacks to be saying you won, it is my welcoming gift to you. Please enjoy the city.

Wow I have not been called young in a long time. Thank you. I do live in the wilderness. I have seen the fire based paramedics come work part time and not last one weekend because they were unable to handle the stress related to being on your own making all medical decisions on your own. There is nothing wrong with FF being trained to do basic skills, i.e. first responders, emt-b's. But EMS should be a separate service focused on real medical education and treatment. I have met some good fire based emts of various levels but never a great one. The bible mentions ( paraphrased )you can not serve two Gods because you are divided and can not give your best to both. Same principle applys in EMS and Fire. If you are divided you can never realize your greatest potential. Our focus must be on giving the patients the best medical care. Giving the best requires devoting ourselves to our profession.

Fire has no business in EMS. Fire should take care of fire. Fire can take care of extrication, and the very rare rope rescue. EMS is Medical. We need to focus on medical not fire. I have both certs. I quit the fire side. It is wrong for fire to take money that should go to EMS. There are more calls for EMS daily than fire. Both are separate specialitys. Focus on one and become the best. Try and do both and regardless of what you think you will not do justice to either.

AMEN. Now it has been interesting hearing how citys have used various ways to cut response time. Where I'm at might as well take the ambulance as not much traffic.

If we are already checking him in the vehicle with the bomb we might as well kiss our butts goodbye so why not try and move it away from the building. If we're in the ambulance when he tells us this not much we can do. By the time you run back to his truck get it started boom, bye bye, game over. So if in ambulance call it in while hauling butt away, while you call it in. Make it very clear how little time left so more don't get killed running to try and stop it. This would suck and if you live you would have the what if's for the rest of your life.

I think the big old hippo gets thrown out there way to often. I would welcome it as a protection and a great way for QA/QI.

So there is a way to make video legally. What we need is a lawyer that specializes in EMS to let us know what we need to do it legally. Of course it will probably vary by state.
