Thats where dvd player comes in. Show dvd's of gross surgical procedures or for first time OB's videos of how gross and painful delivery can be. Just so they can relax since they know what to expect. :twisted:

Get with a service and third ride, may have to offer to do this w/o pay first to help yourself remember and second to prove yourself to the service. While waiting for calls practice your BLS skills. No book will be that much help for a basic. What basics do is more about what the see and how they react rather than having to diagnose and treat. So go hands on. Then continue education to next level. Hope you continue to feel better.

Exactly. Now many states do have statutes that require people in general to stop and render aid, if they are first at the scene. Myself I stop at times at other times I try and get a quick triage report so dispatch can get proper equipment dispatched. But as far as car very little I can do with no equipment.

Radio contact was only available about last 10 miles of 90 mile transport, not enough repeaters. Sat phone if you pulled over on a high spot. To often in the canyons and mountains could not maintain sat contact.

It is hard to survive on volly pay. :?

My new service 90%+ of the time that is possible. My old service maybe 10% of the time possible. Rural EMS is not as easy as picking up the phone.

Everything will kill you. I remember when several food items were declared bad for us. So I said I guess I'll just live on water. Next day water was declared deadly. So I decided if it all will kill me I will just drink scotch. That reminds me of an old West Texas cowboy. He was raised drinking Rye whiskey. He was about 60 and had never had a drink of water. A couple of fellow cowboys decided to play a joke so they milked a rattlesnakes venom into a glass and added water. They gave the drink to the old cowboy. He drank it and thanked them. A few months went by and the old cowboy came across a crystal clear spring. He thought back to how good that water he had been given so he climbs down off his horse, kneels down gets a handful of water takes a sip and dies. Moral of the story water is bad for you stick to the hard stuff and you'll live to a ripe old age. Look at George Burns smoked and drink hard stuff and was like a thousand years old.

Perhaps it was an allergic reaction to the sulfate and not the morphine that killed them.

Dust in thinking about this, most times referring has been for dosages. In my old job with 90 mile transport I would sometimes refer back to see if I could try something else. Now with all that time when I would get a pneumonia/cardiac/stroke/other patient ( all this in one patient ) I would look back to make double sure I had not missed something or forgot an exception that would allow a little more aggressive treatment. At my new job where the majority of patients are at the hospital in less than 10 minutes never have referred back to protocols while had a patient. If I had a doubt though I would not hesitate. Only problem is new jobs protocols are much more limited than my old job so hopefully I never revert to my old advanced protocols.
