  1. Please do not enter our health care profession with the goal of driving ambulance. We only want people interested in becoming health care professionals. Can we help you to see what is involved in being a health care professional?
  2. Actually Richard 1 is a big book and the other is a 5 book set. Sorry don't know the full difference of them.
  3. Patients may be more alert than we think. Do ya'll remember this disgrace to our profession? [web:5768c8da7b]http://publicsafety.com/article/article.jsp?id=2783&siteSection=4[/web:5768c8da7b]
  4. Thats where I always mess up I respond in front of everybody. Surprised I still am allowed in the ER. But then again my medical director always backed me. Now in my new job I'll have to try it Dusts way.
  5. Maybe we can get a TV show where ambulance pulls up and patient climbs in to find Border patrol rather than medics. Maybe a host kind of like they do when they catch the child molesters. Sure be interesting chases with baby popping out. I am sure we will have a hit. Of course The last day of this month is my last day here, then will be only traveling the 3 hours to work where most people speak English. I hate the limited protocols at the new job but tired of abuse from those in charge at the old job.
  6. In the citys where it is busy I agree with you. In the rural areas much of our help travel in to work. I currently drive nearly 3 hours to work, most everyone else travel an hour to get to work. I work a 48 to 72 hour shift and then I go home, done for the week. I might not even leave the station other than to get food the whole shift. A busy day will be 6 or 7 calls, no big deal since hospital is within 10 minutes of most calls. I do study, but I also take TV and internet breaks. My studying has led to several others doing the same. So again like everything in EMS there is not a one size fits all except the need to be Professional.
  7. Do you question those that make your protocols? On another post someone brought up how confusing the wording on some of the protocols were. Concern of how they would view you if you approached them for clarification was voiced. In my former service I had medical directors cell phone, house phone, office phone etc on speed dial. I was able to call and discuss concerns, make recommendations, and help implement changes. But based on other posts and even my new job that is not the norm. So are you allowed to contact those in charge of your protocols? Can you make suggestions for changes? Or are you just voiceless, unable to give or get input?
  8. That could work. Might take a little longer but if you stick with it you can do it. Might consider being NP or PA.
  9. I AM HEARBY STARTING A NEW CAMPAIGN " JUST SAY NO ". Now that will solve more problems than anything else.

    New Game

    HEY
  11. That is a joke, that is one of the great unsupported EMS lies we all seem to love to quote. Most patients do not pay. If they do not need an ambulance medicaid, medicare, insurance do not pay unless you are committing fraud. Sorry we need to educate the public by denying transport when it is not needed.
  12. No way I carry a perfectly healthy taxi fare. It is stupid to risk injury. All of us know that probably less than 10% of all 911 calls actually are true emergencys. Just because the idiot thinks his stubbed toe is a reason to dial 911 is no reason for me to risk injury for myself or partner. I think next stubbed toe I get I will tell them walk to ambulance. Then as they get close pull the ambulance forward. Stop holler sorry and do it again and again till they actually get to hospital. Sad part some idiot would probably fall for it.
  13. Thanks for the link. Abuse will continue as long as we are not allowed to say no to the guy that just wants lunch at the hospital. The you call we haul attitude is destroying EMS as much if not more so than the uneducated people coming into our profession. Perhaps if we didn't burn everybody out that is worth a darn by hauling all callers things could be improved.
  14. Well Ok I'll holster the new 44, this time.
  15. Well thank you pilgrim.
  16. Cool you have some alphabet next to your name.
  17. charge a million they aint paying no how.
  18. Just tell him to shove it. Some docs just suck much like some in EMS do.
  19. I had a doc chew me out for c-collar and back boarding a patient that was in a roll over complaining of neck pain with altered mental level. He stated it was not needed and did so in front of nurses, patients, etc before he even checked patient. I hope I get to testify against him when that patient sues the doctor. I did screw up on another patient. Thankfully my mistake actually worked and helped patient, but actually could have killed him. The doctor there after he adjusted everything asked me to come to the break room and explained what I had done and how bad the outcome could have been. I had gotten tunnel vision and missed a major contraindication. But that doctor was cool. I learned a lot from him over several years. My point is who the hell knows what some of theses docs are thinking. The one that tried to dress me down for doing what my protocols required I started telling him what I thought and my partner pulled me out of the ER. I don't mind a butt chewing for a mistake if it's handled right but I will not take public humiliation especially when no mistake made.
  20. AAOS Nancy Caroline's paramedic textbook: Emergency Care in the Streets is a great book to get basic ideas in simple terms. It as well as Brady and Mosby should all be required. I can not see anyone getting proper education from just one textbook. As a student I often start with the AAOS get the basic overview and then check the other 2 as well as other books and internet sources for a more in depth understanding. If you search the AAOS book by title you will find some discussions about it.
  21. Programs like that would be a great idea. The problem in my area is staff is run so thin that no one is available. I do think it would be great for the elderly as well as maybe new parents. Go by visit and show how to make house safe for the kiddo's. I do like the tables detailing elder abuse. It is sad to see what people do to their parents and grandparents.
  22. Darn ruff did it cause he's against the normal.
  23. Sorry to tell you but they done killed kojak, they said it was because he was a black gator.
  24. While I feel strongly that all volunteer services should go paid, I also feel that those that choose to stay should insist that the service be run in a professional manner. You must set an example by acting in a professional manner even when posting on a forum. Find your services by-laws and read them. Work with-in those rules to force a more professional attitude. Then work to convert over to a true professional paid department.
  25. UMMM, rat the other, other, other, white meat.
