  1. My second service is considering getting a rescue truck because fire is volly and they gripe that they are not getting paid while they continue to volunteer, and also because volly sometimes delayed responses. We are talking about keeping a paid 3 man team staffing it. I am trying to get them to include a small foam unit on it as well as all the extrication gear.

  3. I hope I can get back into that good of shape. I tried to get out of bed this morning, got so winded and tired I had to sleep another couple of hours.
  4. I love comments from students and big city dwellers, these comments are big reason we are looked at as taxi's rather than part of healthcare. Most bumps, bruises, tummy aches, fevers, etc, etc are not emergencys and part of our job should be to educate people when they should call for an ambulance. Again I am all for them calling if they have a doubt, let us come check but then we should have the say whether they are transported. I know common sense is frowned on in EMS but I refuse to give up mine. I am educated enough to know that a stubbed toe will be fine either in just a few minutes or if broken will be fine riding in the family car. I still cannot believe how many people did not even have enough common sense to deny transport to the guy, in a scenario I posted, that just wanted go eat the hospital lunch special. In my part of the world if I transport the stubbed toe, there will be no ambulance in a 3000 square mile area for close to 4 hours. As I stated I have no problem coming to check on a person, if they think they have an emergency. Thankfully I have protocols that allow us to say no to people. I am allowed to use my common sense. This does help there be a greater chance that the ambulance will available when someone has something more serious. Yes we still take lots of people that really could go private car, but they are more serious than the stubbed toe, and yes I have had more than one 911 call for a painful toe. Be careful out there my fellow taxi drivers.

  9. I agree with AK on this point. Focus on good nutrition and cardio. With that and proper lifting technique you can take care of business.

  13. Ties are a bad idea as is keeping your stethoscope around your neck, the grab both ends your blue soon.
  14. Sounds broken you might need a new one with a mute button. Now back on topic. There are cheap to high dollar versions. I do not know a lot about them. A few questions. How many ambulances? Will it be used all the time or occasionally? Are you wanting to use it to track your ambulances locations? In other words maybe more info will help someone answer you better.
  15. Based on title thought there was some new style of GPS. In a rural setting GPS is great, never tried with navigation, but it might have trouble when address is white house past the dead cactus, right after the curve with the barking dog. The complete system like Garmin in a city might be great to find your patients, where you can enter street and number. Sorry not more help.
  16. In my area a large percentage of patients will tell you it's not an emergency. People in this area have been convinced that medicaid is coverage for the free taxi with the bright lights and sirens. I'm all for jail time for these idiots. I have no problem going to anybody that calls unsure if what they have is an emergency. Where I have a problem is someone demanding to be taken 90 miles to the hospital for a stubbed toe. I will not take them. If I get there and after exam see there is nothing we can do to benefit them enroute to the hospital we first explain that the ambulance is not needed and the costs etc. If they still demand it we deny them. I guess if we had a jail law say sure get on board, then haul there butts to jail. But again if you think it's an emergency call 911. I will rush over, but please be understanding when we explain no it's not a real emergency. As far as small volume, perhaps they are far from the hospital. My 2 transports per day at primary where we are 90 miles to hospital are much tougher than the 12 per day at my part time job where I'm very seldom more than 15 miles from the hospital. So #'s are not the all telling aspect. But biggest problem is service should not be volunteer.
  17. Glad you got a 3rd that will help. Don't forget to ask for diapers. Would you want yourself or family to have to lay in crap? Just because they put a fresh diaper on right before you leave does not stop them from crapping themselves 5 minutes out. If you cannot change a diaper you should not be treating patients. Is the patient able to communicate? If so could you not assist them onto a bedpan? During my 90 mile 911 transports we often have patients on bedpans or urinals. Or can you get them to put a foley in for the piss. Still need to deal with the crap. Sorry to be so blunt but I have seen to many elderly, or mentally or physically challenged left in there own urine and crap. It is not dignified, don't do it. Change them. It's not a big deal.
  18. Best car ever next to Kit in knight rider  One of the fire newsletters I used to get ( yes I to was a hose monkey, but no more ) would mention accidents and there were several involving those responding POV. Don't remember which one did that. I am also sure there were lawsuits but have nothing to back it other than knowing how sue happy everyone is.

  20. One of the best mustards with a brilliant ad campaign. Maybe I can start using that when we go to the stubbed toe call to help keep a better outlook.
  21. In the case of ambulance service they should not be laying around to be stolen. Hospitals are often way to lax about leaving the scrubs and other items out where a passerby could help themselves. Again ours would be the higher quality more form fitted with high quality printing or embroidery, not that crappy black ink stamp so many hospitals use.

  23. As a former volly, that actually was with a good service, with people that are good instructors, I still got very little benefit. I did not develope my skills till I went paid and actually had to work. In your case you don't even seem to have people that are willing to help you so you are not gaining anything by being a volly except frustration and bad habits. I wish you the best in your education and your future career. I encourage you to ask for help in the forums or private message me if you need more help.
