  1. Wow you can repeat what I said just a couple of posts earlier.
  2. Original poster should have applied KED. Then moved to back board and secured. Plenty of time to handle this call the right way. Rapid extrication would not be justified, if you felt it was ok to let her stay in the car plenty of time to do it right. Patient screams, say so sorry but we'll have you ready to get pain meds quicker if we get you ready for the next ambulance.
  3. When you consider his arrest for child porn, could easily make you question his right to the money.
  4. Yea I wish they could take the income from these books and put it into children victims funds. But it is the best book out there.
  5. Thanks again for all the ideas on this scenario. One service in my area only gets 8 calls per month. They are the primary for about 500 square miles, 35 miles from hospital, population in area of 600. The volly's quit. Now it will be paid $13 for basics and $18 for paramedics and they will be paid for every hour of their shifts. They will be required to stay at the station for entire shift. City's and counties can afford EMS. Volly's don't buy into the crap that they can't. Keep the ideas coming. Hopefully we can keep helping other services become paid. I have heard good news that in my area there are 3 volly depts that will be paid starting Jan 1, 2008, and the busiest one only does 90 calls a year.
  6. I can't tell you the number of times in my area that I have come up on motorcycle crashes where the rider is dead and the bike only had minor damage. Riders head, no helmet, smashes into handle bar posts or the rocks. Other times worked riders that had totaled bikes. Wearing helmet and leathers they only had minor injuries. Yes I've seen the opposite, but not often. Just like the seatbelt debate, well I knew a guy would have lived if he had not been wearing his belt. May happen but not often.
  7. Thanks Dust for getting us heading back on the topic. I will give tough love. I will tell them what I think. Especially the guy that calls monthly going thru DT's because he can't afford a fix and crys all the way to the hospital, and promises he will never do drugs again. The first few times they ask for help and I try and get them sent to some of the agencys that provide help. After they keep walking away if they call they can get what ever I want to tell them, yes waste of air but hey it helps the 90 miles go by faster, and actually have had a couple of people that have been clean a while, probably just tired of hearing me gripe at them.
  8. My dear lady I feel your pain. Many of us have been in similiar situations. But I must come to the defense of riblett. If a persons family and friends cannot provide a safe place then it is better to have them in an assisted care home. I have seen injuries to both patient and caregivers where inappropriate care was going on because they loved the person to much to allow others to care for them. I do not feel it is self righteous to complain about going to the same house multiple times a day or even a month when it is because family can no longer properly take care of patient. Some of my most memorable calls have been to assist a family member to get back up, but it was rare for them to call. In cases of abuse which is what is happening if family is not able to care for a person alone but refuses to get help, I have reported them to multiple agencys at the same time. The result some have been taken from family and others were given home health assistance. I have no problem with occasionally going to render aid but when we become the primary care givers that is abuse of the system.
  9. Call the funeral home, the police, and the JP. When either arrive we go home. We comfort family best we can. If we have some HFS(hysterical female syndrome) we may wait around a little longer if we do not get another call.
  10. It is difficult to ride up with a friend that you know is not going to make it. Worst part of peeing out back door is when driver hits the breaks and you flip over. The fountain of pee tends to upset the patients.
  11. Biggest thing is dispatch needs to stay out of the treatment field. Get the info and get it right, then send us. I prefer my primary service where dispatch transfers callers to us, then we can get the info needed. I don't hate dispatchers, actually have a few that are my friends.

  13. Have you ever asked one of your frequent flyers, because of choices they make, why you should help them? Why they have kept lying to you about making changes? Or do you just quietly hall them again? Yes alcohol, drugs, and for that matter any problem we bring on ourselves could be claimed to be an illness, I'm sure some Doctor or group would back you. If that is something you want to discuss please start another topic.

No one would ever try and beat the system.
  15. So you get a person ruining their lives.(Abusive relationship, drugs, alcohol, etc). Do you give tough love? In other words are you straight with them? Do you tell them the facts about ruining their lives if they continue the course? Or do you pussyfoot around doing what you have to do but avoiding the tough subjects?

  20. Strike, strike, strike. Of course as a yank from a right to work state, if I strike they just hire someone new. Guess all of us face a lot more crap than we should since we are there to help people.
  21. So dwayne tell us how you really feel. This keeping your feelings bottled up is unhealthy.
  22. Wow that just might work. thanks
