For those with no knowledge of EMS Lights and Sirens(L&S) are only a request for right away. You still must drive with due regard for others safety. There have been many EMS workers get tickets and also lose in court when they wrecked because of speed and or running past red lights/stop signs. If I recall correctly some have even been jailed for their driving and its results. Also keep in mind if it takes you 10 minutes to drive to the hospital following all laws, running L&S and ignoring all laws will only save 30-60 seconds if you make it there alive. If they die 30-60 seconds from the hospital because you drive safely, they would have died at the hospital had you gotten there quicker by risking everyones safety.

tniuqs some states basically allow the requirement to join a union to get a job. Texas does not do that. It is a right to work/at will state. No union membership required and if a union strikes the employer can just fire everyone. And if Austin EMS fired everyone they could have all positions filled for less money within a week because there are so many diploma mills around for EMS. And as lousy as it would seem to fire everyone many transfer jockeys would jump at chance for a 911 job, so even with a bad Rep from firing everyone they would fill the spots. Point is the Paramedics have no leverage. As to drop in volume etc. No probably have seen an increase in calls. But I bet with economic turmoil they are seeing drastic reduction in amount collected. Fewer people have insurance or money and if a person doesn't pay can't really do anything to them.

If the union had not accepted this jobs would have been lost. I would rather have my job than go hungry. In Texas the union is actually powerless as we are a right to work state. Plus even w/o the raise Austin is one of the higher paying non fire services. One reason I will not join a union is I have seen company's close because the unions refused to do what was needed to keep the place open. So I will take no pay raise if it keeps me putting food on the table.
