Squint - one problem - that looks too much like Lone to be you !
-
How many are familiar with them ? Do you find it more difficult to place an EJ on that side if so? Do you continue to swipe the magnet if the patient is still in status in addition to medications? How many have had any training on it and the differences between it and a pacemaker identification? Knowledge about how to place pads for pacing, defib, etc? Just curious wanting to know from an education perspective - thanks !

Wasn't in that group, but I still find it funny. I can see someone relating terror to Tweety with an attitude ! You know we love you !

No problem, thanks for the clarify ! -
No questions to ask, jump right in, have a good time and stay safe. Welcome and good luck on registry. It can be a grump from what I've heard. I've not dealt with the CBT personally, so I can't speak to it, but I would imagine it to be harder as you cannot change your answers as you could before. Firefly

Gypsy - in most states (I know here) that anyone who has been trained in the administration of rectal diazepam is allowed to give it. This may include teachers, nurses, principals, etc. If you have a student there which requires it then you are required to have at least one person for each "shift" the child may be there trained in its administration. Most schools do this as a teacher and the principal as if one is absent then the other can administer it in an episode of status as many school systems don't have a full time nurse for each school, but rather one that floats through the whole school system. It much be kept in a cool place (preferably locked if you can as it is a controlled substance). My guess is due to your experience in EMS you are one of the people chosen and there should be one other. If you do administer it, you do need to contact EMS as that was an episode of status and have them evaluated though that gives you a way of stopping the seizure prior to their arrival. It is no different than giving the other children medication that is prescribed to them. You are not functioning under specific medical direction at the time, but within the confines of a teacher and specific medical guidelines of when to give it. I would have no concerns. In this case it is essentially the same as an epi pen and if I were a parent of a child that required it in status, I would be frustrated to know you could have given it and didn't. The epilepsy foundations are really good at providing information on this type of stuff and they come around and do free trainings to schools, police depts, even EMS services if you request it and can clarify this for you. But you are perfectly legal to administer it. It is prescribed to the child, for a specific amount, under specific conditions. It is not a med which you can give at your discretion which is what is the difference. I'm sure there are other children which require medication throughout the day for certain conditions (ie hyperactivity, whatever). Would be no different than if you had a diabetic child which couldn't give themselves insulin but required it several times a day you would be able to give it due to the things I stated above. Take care.

For all those who are bashing the technical advisor here's a statement issued by his captain as my understanding is that 1. He resigned from the position due to frustration (as stated by a former parter) and 2. Is in complete disagreement with the way the show portrays EMS and 3. He evidently can't speak out publicly against it due to contract. Let's cut him a little slack guys - he tried, they just wouldn't listen. From the JEMS comments area "First of all, Jeff Covitz is one of my medics and I personally watched him fight unsuccessfully with the writers of Trauma to inject some realism into that potboiler. He finally gave up and has distanced himself from the show. We (SFFD EMS) all pretty much knew it was going to to be bad based on the almost daily reports we were getting from own standby crews. Having said that, I think we all need to lighten up, It's a TV show and any relationship to reality is tangential at best. Remember, some of us were working when Mother, Jugs and Speed came out (for some of us it was like a documentary) and I still can see Lou Ferrigno playing a paramedic in an 80's series whose name escapes me. You now know what the cops have experienced since the dawn of television." Mike Whooley Paramedic Captain SFFD EMS

Recently I sat down and was looking at the amount of unity that is had between the vast majority of EMS personnel over trauma and how we are complaining about it. It made me wonder - why do we think it is so important to unite and picket a show that in reality probably won't change much of the public's perspective about us. However, when it comes to an important issue that will affect the future of EMS we become so divided as everyone goes my way is best. We wonder why we are not taken seriously, and I think this in itself proves why. We come together to bicker and complain like little children, but when it comes to important matters we divide. Perhaps if the reverse were true or we learned to all come together as a profession to push for better recognition and to be seen as professionals then it might happen. If we can get NAEMT and JEMS and the other professional organizations to stand up against NBC for inaccuracies in a show, why can we not get them to stand to help us progress the profession? Just some thing to think about.

I was just really getting into EMS when third watch came out. I had mixed things about it. Some parts good, some parts bad. It did go a bit downhill at the end as Richard stated as it went to just a PD show. Fire was nearly written out of it very early and EMS had just a tailing part at the end, though I still found it as a respectable show for the simple fact the characters were developed fairly well. I did not see the pilot so I can't compare the two, but overall it tried. I could take it or leave it, but I do think they made a bit more effort to portray EMS in a better light though they still had the bimbo female medic (can we have a show where the female has her shirt buttoned? would be really nice) that attempted to kill herself and allowed to go back to work (wouldn't happen here sorry, can't speak for FDNY though - things may be different there). No show is perfect, but yes some are better than others.

It tends to lean more towards those naturally witty and sarcastic. Those that aren't tend to take a bit longer to warm up to it if they ever do. It's funny in a way that we can laugh at ourselves and the comments we've made as you know we've all made them on here and make fun of it all. Speaking of which - Dr Bledsoe - has it made it's way to NBC yet? Puts what comes around goes around in a bit different perspective I think. I'm sure your connection on SFF has found humor it in despite his frustration. Thanks for the laugh. Lightened things up.

Thanks for stopping in we wondered how long it would take you to get it and comment. I'm sure Nick is glad you like it !

That's fine JP, I know who you are too - had that name long before I came on here so thats why it doesnt relate to here. Doesn't bother me a bit, my opinions don't change depending on what board I'm on. Have to give me one for consistancy. Squint, you might not, but I'll be the first in line to. If anyone were to dare call me rabbit, they might find themselves waking up like that, especially since according to them, we can just do whatever we want. Oh and did I mention, I'd walk off and leave 'em for a BLS crew to manage. I think not.

I know this is against my typical posts to this thread however, out of fairness to the actors I'm going here. They can't change the character they're given. If that's what NBC what's, that's what they'll get. Money talks much more to the actors than a bunch of rioting EMS workers. This is how they make their living, just as patient care is how we make ours. I'm not saying that makes the characters right, nor does it make them accurate. It just makes them what they are. It's kind of like the medic that works for two services. One service allows them to be very liberal in their treatment, the other is very restrictive. When with the restrictive service, they have to work to work according to what the script reads (ie protocols) even though they may want to do something different that is outside the protocols. The same applies to actors, they have a director to answer to as we do our med director. If they don't perform to expectations, they quickly find themselves looking for another job. I do have pity on the actors in a way as they have been given these scripts and told they are accurate or that's what they want. They are probably like much of the public and didn't know any different. I don't believe either of the female actors said "oh, oh make me barbie medic or the porno pilot". If they did, well that's an entirely different issue. However, I'm hoping to believe that's simply the plate they were served and expected to eat. If they didn't, they wouldn't scrap it, they'd just serve it to someone else. I wouldn't be suprised should NBC pull it from their line up to relocate it to one of the cable channels as they have a few other shows. One can only hope the characters are developed more than a damaged medic, a barbie medic, and a pilot that to me seems confused as to what she is. Has the potential to be a good show if allowed to be, otherwise I see it joining the ranks of Saved in the scrap bin. You don't have to have everything perfect, but people expect more in a show that just blowing up lots of stuff and sex every show. That gets old quick and won't survive. Give your characters more of a personal story and interaction, couple tweaks here and there, and you could have a respectable show. Good luck NBC

Too bad I can't point you there terror. Hmm go to work naked? That is an not a viable idea. However, unless one of my coworkers is running around on here in hiding I don't believe any of them would be entertained enough to give me any points - you never know though....and as for the gun - these boys know I can shoot. I was taught by a good one and went shooting with them before and well, let's just say I have good aim for a particular area I do believe they are aware don't mess with this southern girl ! -
Can't wait to meet you Ruff and your family - be a great time I'm sure. The Air museum is pretty cool if you like to see that kind of stuff. I thought it was pretty cool as it had a former Air Force One there. It seems the city will be taking over - will there be anyone there BESIDES us? Take care and stay safe gang. oh fantastic it will complete my whacker look ! where do I order?
-
Then you would be getting the trauma statement of why don't you do something with that education? And they thought we didn't have docs as medics - shame on you all !
-
nah terri, I'd go for the bachelorette and have an inclusion of hot flight medics for you to pick from how's that sound? Requires less drama and no background and well, you can provide the entertainment.
-
I'll get my junk out I use for class and pull them for you tomorrow night and PM to you. Hope it helps. I've got three off top of my head that are really decent two of which are actual scenarios I've had, the other is from another crew so you'll have real stuff not made up things. Later and look for it tomorrow night or the next morning early.

Rock on nick ! Great job on this one I was cracking up and as dust said, you're timing couldn't have been better. Though Rid mysteriously has chosen to stay silent on this topic hmmmm.........
-
You're only jealous dust because you didn't ever have a pilot as good looking as her that you might want to. You probably had ugly old farts but hey at least you lived to tell about it. It's yet to see whether that will happen and whether rabbit is like a cat and has 9 lives - he's already used two of them.

Not being harsh here, but once you realize it's no good get the heck out. Sometimes you don't know what you're going into. Sometimes you do. If you go stupidly into something with no cops that has a real chance of getting you hurt, then no. If you end up in a scene that goes bad, get out. I've had two friends of mine (same call) that started off routine and went downhill quick. One was shot and killed trying to run to behind a tree for safety. My other friend and former partner was shot in the head - lucky it just grazed him hard. Perhaps that's why I feel a bit differently than you Dust, perhaps you've had similar and still feel that way, I'm not sure. Maybe this is one we just have to agree to disagree. No one said they weren't athletic. Heck there are pole dancing classes for workouts and they're challenging (not like I would know). And I have known a few that used it to get through law/medical school as well so no one is calling them ignorant. What I am saying is they have no place coming to work like that. The two former pole dancers that I knew - you would never know unless they told you or you were privy to their "off" time. At work, they were very respectable, classy, ladies. These two bimbos on the show could do well to learn from that. Leave the stripping for the stage or the bedroom.

Awww dust, are you trying to say I resemble Rosie O' Donnell? I thought more of you than that. You could have at least picked a better comparison. I don't swing that way, nor do I resemble Hessa the Heffer. however gentlemen , sorry but I am not coming to work dressed like either of these pole dancer wanna be.
