If you could change one thing about EMS what would it be?
Pav56C replied to itku2er's topic in General EMS Discussion
Im sure some will take offense to this and if you do its pointed toward you but: Get rid of the old time good old boys! The organization I am affiliated with is run by old (70s) people who are very againist any sort of change. You try to make the organization a more professional one so that it wont be laughed out through out the county and your ideas are dismissed with no thought or explanation. I have given up caring about the place. I punch the cllock and do my time. Until they are gone any attempt at improvement is futile. -
It doesnt matter how old you are. I started out at the age of 18. You can either handel it or you cant. There is no coming into it. And if your gonna do it you gotta do it all. If I were training I would want them there on every Oh Shit call. Thats were good techs and medics are made.

its all SS agents, but I dont know about other agencies, it could be for them to but I dont know for sure. i appluad you on your work. It seems like alot of the profesionals up here are very snotty, and act like they dont want to be bothered with anything. Up here they start around $14.00/hr., your living in the wrong region. But any way I assumed that if your fresh out of highschool, dont want to go to school, and need a job, EMT is a pretty good option. right? from what everyone says it sounds pretty easy to get certified. I think the same thing is happening with the local cop occupation. My generation (young, lazy, greedy kids) think that they can go to communitty for 2 yrs, go to an academy and get an easy job as a local cop making good money, and a pension. The problem is that they are partially right. lets end this topic here. If anyone has any advice for me im all ears.

Dont worry, I know that. I want to go into ballistics or explosives something along that route. If I could go tactical for a few years that would be great. And I know that you dont become a "hero" in that line of work, and if you disagree; how many SWAT members are praised on TV and glorified? None that I know. Its what I've wanted to be since I was a kid. Its not about the money (although it is nice), its not about the "glory", it just "me" its who I am. I'd join the military, except our officers arent doing that good of a job, and Im not talking about Bush and Generals, I support them utmost. Its the guys on the ground that make mistakes. I'm thinking about the CoastGuard, Border Patrol, or AirMarshalls for a few years. They are easier to get into and will give me experience needed for the Fed Agencies. Agreed, but Im not sure why I keep coming back. I have had a mentor for my senior project ( its a high school thing) who is in the Secret Service and he said it is a huge factor. They all get certified. Plus the exceptance rate is under 3%. Im looking into various Agencies because of the odds of getting selected. Including ATF, FBI, DSS, and SS. Experience like this will definatly help my chances. The number one thing he told me is to get certified in as many things as you can, get as much experience as you can, and dont lie. sorry about that, I didnt say "some" even though I was thinking it. Im sure some people do it because they want to help. But others, who knows? I must thank you for understanding me and "having my back" on this one. thank you.

No. 1: Im a volunteer, maybe for a few years, hopefully for life, I'd like to keep doing it. If I take the place of someone in a class who wants to be a pro then I guess they are SOL, they should have been a little faster in applying. They are doing it to make money, Im doing it out of kindness. No. 2: Okay maybe 9-11 wasnt a really good example, but you get my point, when the shit hits the fan its better to be prepared than not. And if you didnt get that then maybe you should get an education. No. 3: One of the reasons I did join a volunteer squad is because it has so much relevance to Fed. Agent. Most Fed. Agents have to get EMT certified anyway. They are both high stress jobs, and maybe one day if my partner gets shot I will have the experience and training to keep him alive. No. 4: Its not about being a hero. Its about helping people. I dont care if no body knows who I am, as long as I help someone I am satisfied. Isnt that what it is all about? Isnt that why people become EMTs? No. 5: I dont plan on spending hundreds of $ on equipment. Hence the reason I dont have and dont plan to get an O2 bottle. No. 6: And yes, I would still love to be involved after I am an Agent. Who knows I might not even be able to become an agent. I hope to get more certifications over the next couple years as well. For example Im looking into taking the Dive course.

why not? isnt there some sort of law that says you are supposed to help out, correct me if im wrong. i know there is a law saying you cant be held accountable for helping. i understand knowledge is power, and im not worried about that. education will come to me in time, and im not worried about money, i work and have a high paying/low labor job. im actually going to study psychology, it wont help me out with EMT, but i dont want to be a professional EMT, i want to be a federal agent. last night i watched the 9/11 movie; if you were to find yourself in that type of situation wouldnt you want to be prepared? if you came upon an accident where someone has massive bleeding wouldn't you want to be able to help stop the bleeding before an ambulance arrives. where i live it generally takes us alittle under ten minutes to respond to a call(all volunteer), and we cover 5 towns, it could take over 15 min for an ambulance to get onscene. Now im not an expert but im pretty sure the human body can loose a lot of blood in 15 min. i personally dont know how a trained EMT could pass a bad accident(with out responders on scene) with out guilt and wondering if someone might not have died if they had taken action. its obvious that one would immediatly activate the EMS system when encountering an accident. its not like im trying to be a savior or something, im not going to "cure" them by myself. I just want to be able to do what i can while i can.

understood, but if you are educated in training is that not education. if you can get college credits for an EMT class how can you not consider it education. i now realize you are refering to formal college education, which in that case i will be getting a few scholarships, and there is a program that covers $600 of a volunteers education per year in New Jersey. now if anyone would like to answer the question i asked i am all ears.

Just wondering if anyone has seen or used these and how they are. I found them in the duluth trading company. http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/departm...ture=Product_19 they are made out of firehose material, so they are suppose to be real tough, they are water/oil resistant. Im thinkin i may get a pair, at $50 a pair they seem resonable. Plus they have them in navy blue. any thoughts?

im pretty new to the squad and one evening in the building i had an older member ask me if i had seen a body yet. I replied no i had not, he said "dont worry you will", less then an hour later we get a call, and what do you know, heart attack. it was kind of weird. i just looked at him in ht e rig and said "deja vu huh". he knew what i was saying.

yeah im taking a 5 week course 8-4, 3 days a week for 5 weeks, 120hrs total, 110 hrs required attendence. it works for me beause i dont have school during the summer, and i work on the weekends. so its really the only time i can do it.

tskstrm, what is CFR? or did you mean CPR?

thanks jakeemt for giving me usefull info, i completly agree with what everyone is saying and never said i didnt. i know im not certified right now, and wouldnt think of responding to an accident POV. I AM CPR/BLS certified, and if i stumble upon an accident or something im better than an ordinary citizen, and want to have BVMs, gloves, etc. with me, its just like an ordinary citizen carrying a 1st aid kit, except a little more. we just got a seziure call that was right down the road from my house, im not on call, and i wouldnt know what to do anyway, so i didnt go. im not out to save the world here or anything. I dont plan on using the bag now, im just trying to get it together for when i do have the training to use everything. Im on the Blairstown Squad in NJ, and its squad policy that you are a probationary EMT until you have been an EMT for one year. You have to have a CPR/BLS certification in order to ride on calls, which I do and have been on over a dozen in the past month or so. I have seen a few things, things that normally dont happen in my rural area. Im learning by watching right now. grabing stuff, lifting, that kind of thing, im a support member. Anthony: our policy is that to ride on calls you have to have a CPR/BLS cert. once you get an EMT cert they let you do alot more, but you still are on probation: you cant go directly to calls, and you have to have a nonprobationary emt on the rig with you) this is so that you dont find yourself in a situation where you dont know what to do. I have been told that alot of what you learn in EMT training doesnt really apply in the world. jake i have an idea of what your saying with the airway devices, but im not 100%, ill learn it soon though. The stuff thats in it is just stuff that my uncle had laying around, he responds to a lot of Rte. 80 calls. we have it passing right through our area. once i get a hold of more supplies and learn how to use them i will put them in.

no we are supposed to go to the station and hopp in a rig, but moost people have bags so they dont have to if they see something happen or if they are close. legally i cant go directly to a scene for a year after I have EMT cert. I just want something so that if i need it i have it. im going to emfacise this again: Im not yet an EMT, I will be before the end of the summer, i want to get a head start in getting a bag together, just want to know what are some essntial equipment. assume i dont know much, because right now i dont im learning a little bit now but once i start the course i will be certified in 5 weeks. $40 for O2 bottles? i thought they were atleast $100, guess i was wrong, but anyway I'd rather have the other supplies in the bag then have just an O2 bottle, its not that big of a bag.
-
yeah im new to it all, im not even an emt yet, so i cant really take vitals or any of that, but in time i will, and then i will probobly get that stuff, ill just have to add it to the list. if you read it all you would lnow that my uncle gave it to me, and he didnt have the O2 bottle for it. thats why i dont have, and at the age of 18 i dont have the money to buy a O2 tank.

Im new to the EMT thing, Ill be getting certified during the summer. Everyone talks about all the gear there squads give them. But Im on a volunteer squad so we dont get anyhting other than training and clothes. Im luck enough to have an uncle who is a professional firefighter/emt, and he loaned me a green O2 bag to use, and some stuff that he had laying around. My question is: What are the essential parts for an emt response bag? I really just want to have enough to do something if i drive upon an accident or something. i realize im not really allowed to use any of it yet, but i am CPR certified and if i can help someone i will. I currently have: a shit load of gloves 2 lrg truama dressings 1 BVM adult 1 BVM Ped 2 5x9 abd pads? (not really sure what that is) 18 4x4 gauve pads 16 3x3 gauve pads 1 emt sheers 2 med gauve rolls 1 lrg gauve roll 2 cold packs 3 small triangular bandages 2 med triangular bandages 1 space blanket some alchol prep pads and a bunch of these plastic hook looking things that im not really sure what they are. i think i need to get a small pen light to stick in it.i have looked at complete bags for sale and they have a lot more stuff in them, but what exactly is necesarry. thank you.
