Ten Thoughts to Ponder Number 10 Life is sexually transmitted. Number 9 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die Number 8 Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich. Number 7 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks. Number 6 Some people are like a Slinky.....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs. Number 5 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing. Number 4 All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism Number 3 Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents? Number 2 In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. AND THE NUMBER 1 THOUGHT FOR 2006: We know exactly where one cow with Mad-cow-disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in America but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of immigration.

$7000 to $10,000 cost!!! And Hospitals cutting everywhere they can, yet they can afford this expense. Really Really Stupid. I have a deep hatred of mystery shoppers of any kind any where.

I would not do it. Our medics would not ask that of us. I know they would have said for us basics to take over controlling bleeding, and since we have I's on board as well they can do all the IV stuff and the medic do his drug thing. This does not sit well with me.

The county where I live has: Total population 8,010 Square miles (land) 511.08 Population per square mile 15.67 Spread out through the county are 8 communities, the largest two have populations of less than 2,000. Of these eight communities there are three ALS units. The other 5 communities have a BLS unit and depending on the nature of the call will be tiered with another unit that is ALS. Our county is also aging, with the greater population over 65. We have on community hospital in one of the towns, and a slightly larger hospital across the river into the next state, which is actually closer for the unit I am on. We are all volunteer, everyone. We see just about everything, from the truck driver who decided he needed to go to the hospital because he did not have a BM that day, or the farmer who got him arm torn off in the power take off on the tractor, to the baby being born in the local gas station, or one of our own members having burns over 58 percent of his body. I have helped pick up body parts from the interstate from accidents, or helped the stranded in a snowstorm. We get it all, maybe not as often as the urban based units but we do get our share. We may not show up in matching EMS shirts and pants, our folks know who we are and what we all do for a living, be it farmer, cook, butcher, mortician, nurse. I hate these threads that turn into a pissing match of quotes, or people pitting paid vs volunteer, we are all here for the same reason, we do what we do because we want to be it paid or volunteer, to help people regardless of their location or illness or accident.

Thrombocytopenia is any disorder in which there are not enough platelets. Platelets are cells in the blood that help blood to clot. This condition is sometimes associated with abnormal bleeding. Next Reye's Syndrome

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, degenerative, invariably fatal brain disorder. Typically, onset of symptoms occurs at about age 60. There are three major categories of CJD: sporadic CJD, hereditary CJD, and acquired CJD. There is currently no single diagnostic test for CJD. The first concern is to rule out treatable forms of dementia such as encephalitis or chronic meningitis. The only way to confirm a diagnosis of CJD is by brain biopsy or autopsy. In a brain biopsy, a neurosurgeon removes a small piece of tissue from the patient's brain so that it can be examined by a neurologist. Because a correct diagnosis of CJD does not help the patient, a brain biopsy is discouraged unless it is need to rule out a treatable disorder. While CJD can be transmitted to other people, the risk of this happening is extremely small. Encephaloceles

Think of it in this context: Would you really want to work for an agencey that hires the people you described?

Systems For Touching Gurney/Clipboard/Pens without Gloves?
Cookie replied to AnthonyM83's topic in General EMS Discussion
Since we have three truck stops, we always glove up before making pt. contact. That came from our Medical Director. If you saw some of these guys and their rigs you would surely understand. All linens come off the cot every run, the cot is then wiped down with disenfectant before its ever remade. -
I buckle up regardless of the vehicle I am in, driving or passenger. They do save lives. Anyone in my vehicle buckles up. In Iowa and Nebraska its the law and they do ticket you. I would much rather be cut out of a vehicle then peeled off from underneath a vehicle or scrapped up off the roadway. IMHO

And no easy button either

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Smelling salts are also known as ammonium carbonate, a whitish, crystalline solid ((NH4)2CO3.H2O). * When placed in water, it is called "aromatic spirits of ammonia." * Smelling salts are used to arouse consciousness because the release of ammonia [NH3] gas that accompanies their use irritates the membranes of the nose and lungs, and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex (that is, it causes the muscles that control breathing to work faster). One such smelling salt is ammonium carbonate (NH4)2CO3.

In any case I would take it to your supervisor and tell him what you found. Let him take it from there.

Several years ago we had a van roll over on the interstate north of our district. There were 9 occupants in the van, 2 fatalities, the van rolled on top of them after they were thrown out. We were among the three other districts called in for mutual aid. for the two additional accident victims. The interstate was covered in what we call black ice, slicker than snot. They had two fire trucks, big yellow ones blocking lanes, state troopers, and three ambulances, we where the fourth called. This idiot drove off the shoulder around the firetrucks and past the state trooper and nailed one ambulance smack a@! in the back. The Emts got broken arms, shoulders and legs. The critical patient they just loaded into the amublance died. Yep there are idiots out there.

The Mouthwash Riddle, SOLVED! (kinda gross, btw)
Cookie replied to Asysin2leads's topic in Patient Care
It's not only the homeless who drink the mouthwash, it's the kids as well. Although I cannot imagine wanting to get my alcohol in mouthwash or nyquil form but they certainly are doing it. Our local law enforcement pulled a teen over who was driving irradicaly. He failed the breathilizer, he had been drinking mouthwash and cough syrup. -
My first thought on this is if you had done a SAMPLE HISTORY on your first visit, wouldn't you have found that the pt. was insulin dependent? Just a thought and part of the patient assessment, might have saved the second run.

There are lots of idiots in the world, and most of them make the news

Heads out to roll over this. A 49 year old with chest pains, sob, nausea. But then its a female and they are the most underdiagnosed for a heart attack. Remind me never to go to this hospital if I am ever in the area.
