How do I handle a medic who is conducting himself unprofessionally
Just Plain Ruff replied to promedEMT's topic in Archives
paranoid? But seriously I totally agree with your post. Go talk to the guy. see what he took offense to. If he refuses to see you then that's his loss. But the advice of others stands - no matter what you are tempted to write on facebook, think of it this way 'would I want my boss, mother, sister, lover, coworkers" to see this? If not then don't write it. Go see the guy and talk to him. probably won't make a friend but it's possible -
Let me ask this, by crotchity's logic, are black people really that stupid that they need a test to be dumbed down to pass with a failing grade? No-one has asked this question but really, are black people so Stupid because the white person kept them down. I better go over to my neighbors house, He told me he grew up in the inner city chicago schools, with a graduation rate of little over 35% in his school. He graduated with a 3.75 gpa, went on to be a star kicker on his college football team, he graduated from college with a 3.9 gpa, he now is a top sales executive for a huge pharmaceutical company. Since all his distant relatives were held back by a white guy, then shouldn't I go over an tell him that our good friend Crotchity says that by all accounts he should be STUPID? I'll bet that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson if they read what you are writing would be looking you up. You are the poster child for Sharpton and Jackson. You are pretty literate on these forums yet by your own logic you shouldn't be!!! You should be failing everyone of your classes, you should have never gotten past the entrance exam for the fire department you work for. So how the HELL did you do it Crotch? How did you actually pass that white man's test? How did Barack Obama get where he is today? How did Clarence Thomas get to be a lawyer, the LSAT has math on it. He shouldn't have passed that test. How did the black astronauts get to be astronauts? They did have to know math and science. They should not be where they are today. Plus, wouldn't by dumbing down the test, decreasing the passing scores allow for more whites to pass the same said test? So the same number of whites are passing so how is dumbing down the test going to get more blacks into the fire academy or the police department?

Ok let's hold parents responsible!!!. How does one do that? You can hold the teachers responsible by limiting their raises, requiring additional education. Hold the students responsible by making requirements which punish or take away extra curricular activities such as sports and band. But how do we hold the parents responsible. Some parents don't give a shit about this type of stuff and will pitch a holy shit fit if they are asked to do anything more than doing the bare minimum. You can't take education away from their kids as its a right!! Parents have no true vested interest in making their kids succeed because the truth is that it truly doesn't affect them the parent. Little johnny is failing, what are you going to do to the parent?? This is a serious question. What kind of penalties can you atach to the parent? I'm betting there are no penalties that you can assess the parent that won't get taken to court by the aclu in a heartbeat. Taking away the privelidges of litle johnny who is failing, has no family structure, is a memberof one of those classes that annie posted above, is just punishing the student andnot the parent. I do not have the answers but I can guarantee that my son will have both parents involved in his schooling and education. To do less for my children will be shortchanging their education and that does nobody any good. Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

I worked for AMR. Not a bad place if you like the fact that your replaceable and quickly. There are some places that AMR runs that you might be more than a number, but I don't know of many. It's all how you work the job. If you are ok with the status quo of being a number and replaceable then you will fit in well. Go to the interview if you have one and see where it takes you. Just don't drink the Kool-Aid!!!! I think that if you have not worked for AMR in the past and I did for over 4 years, then do you really know how things are operated there? Sure, you can talk to your EMS friends but seriously, most of those who hate AMR havent' worked ffor them. The management of AMR in Independence MIssouri was pretty good. Home grown supervisors who had a vested interest in their friendships, Equipment that was pretty darn state of the art and a number of nice places to post the ambulance. We were supposed to be within 4 blocks of a post and if you could go to a nice restaurant and the like in that 4 blocks then by all means they encouraged it (management did). They also had an open door policy which a lot of times did not work out to your advantage but at least the door was open to discuss problsms. I had a 4 partners in the 4 years that I was there. The only times I had a different partner was when my partner was sick or I was pulling an overtime shift. The job is all in what you make of it. If you go in thinking you will hate thejob or dislike it then you will find some way to do just that. If you go in with an open mind and a we'll see attitude then who knows, it might be your place to work till retirement.

I'm all for raising the candidate rather than lowering the bar. What are some suggestions or things that could be put in place in order to do this. Surely just re-writing the test failed already, so maybe that's not the right idea. Do we start in the schools or at home? Do we hold teachers accountable for their students performance or not? The majority seems to want to hold teachers accountable but I have several friends and a sister in law who are teachers, two teach in predominately affluent white dominated schools and 2 teach in inner city style schools. You can hold a teacher accountable for some of the poor performance in the schools but then do we also hold the students accountable? The consistent underlying theme I get from my friends and sister in law is that you can only teach a student who is willing to learn. What of the student who doesn't care? Their test performance, or the test performance of enough of these types of studends if bad enough will pull down the entire classes test results thus skewing the results and making the teacher look like she/he didn't teach the students. Like my friends say, you can't teach someone who doesn't want to learn. Then the teachers with sub par students are told to pass those students. What is a teacher to do? What kind of improvements in the education system do you want to put in place that would raise the candidate rather than lower the bar? I'm seeing where Dwayne and others are coming from but where do we make changes and how?

well, since I don't have saucers or coffee cups in my house, I'd call it a dish. I grew up without a coffee drinker in the house. WE had large hot chocolate mugs in the house but we put our mugs on coasters. If it's a all black school then make the tests based on that school. Make the test focus on the level of education in that school, not anywhere else. Hell, let's go one further, let the teachers in that school develop the test, it has to cover each subject that is taught there and the teachers get to develop the questions. I think there also needs to be a white test and a black test, a mexican test, a illegal immigrant test, a test for chinese, japanese and hobo. Let's not assume that the education system is teaching it right. Not all white families grew up with coffee cups and saucers in theri house. Shouldn't I get a pass on that question? I say do away with all those stupid standardized tests anyway, they just are the root of all the causes of problems.

I was going to point that out but this wasn't his patient so I let that one slide. Hopefully the OP let that BLS crew have it though. Case in point on the wet clothes Cold water drowning, Arrive as 2nd unit in to transport the other minor injury guy. Had my partner talk to the patient and I asked if there was anything I could do for the on scene crew. They said no, we're good. I asked, are you going to cut his clothes off? I'm sure if we do that the body will warm up. The medic said "oh yeah, I was going to get to that" I did it for him, placed warm packs in all the right places and we began to get a response. He regained a pulse, started to buck the tube and all that good stuff. Can't say it was the warming but I'll bet it was a major part of it. Unfortunately the guy had been down a while and he didn't really come fully back, but he did survive and does odd jobs around his town. Wouldn't trust him with the keys to the nuclear missiles but he does work a cash register at the local mom and pop gas station. Every time we see each other he smiles and says "My hero" -
Uncomfortable with cultural issues class
Just Plain Ruff replied to Eydawn's topic in Education and Training
To return to our regularly scheduled thread Wendy, can you give me or us an example of what the 4 bullet points were for your cultural group. I think that will give us a better frame of reference. I'd be surprised to hear what the true lesson the instructor was trying to get you to learn was. Was it to make you feel like one of the minorites so you would have a better concept of their culture or was it to beat you down since you did say your cultural breakdown of your class doesn't have many minorities in it at all. If it was the latter then shame on the professor. If it was the former, then how will that professor reinforce what he/she was trying to teach you? I suspect that it was the latter. I don't have much respect for the liberal arts schools any more. I can't remember the last time that I had to look back to Aristotle to win an argument yet philosophy is still taught today. Anyone remember the perfect circle or square argument in class? I sure do. When is the last time that you used what you learned in your hsitory of western civilizaiton class to work on a code? -
Well since I don't have sex with black women or chinese women I'm already a racist so what's one more thing that will get me the racist tag. But how does this make me racist?

The Dayton police department have agreed to lower the passing score for the police officer exam because not enough blacks passed the test. So here's the link to the article http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/city-agrees-to-lower-test-scores-for-police-exam-1103409.html What gets me is the following paragraph The original passing scores determined by Civil Service required candidates to answer 57 of 86 (66 percent) questions correctly on one portion and 73 of 102 (72 percent) on the other. The lowered benchmark requires candidates to answer 50 of 86 (58 percent) questions correctly and 64 of 102 (63 percent) of questions on the other. The original passing score was a 66% on one section and a 72% on the second section. Seriously, if you can't pass the test then should you really be a police officer? 66% - Seriously That's a D grade in every school system that exists and in some it's failing. The article specifically points out that the test passing score was lowered because not enough blacks passed the test. Would accomodations have been made if not enough whites passed? I think not.

BLS in my state cannot start IV's so where did the IV come from? What are the patients lung sounds? i'm going to want a portable chest X-ray right away to determine the presence of a pneumo. That's for starters I'm also going to want the following 1. Baseline labs along with an ETOH level and a drug screen 2. Foley cath this guy 3. Chest x-ray, cspine, lspine, tspine, Chest abdominal Pelvic CT scan which more than likely will take the place of the conventional x-rays for a quick look This guy isn't going to be at your hospital for long, you can always get the labs to the receiving hospital after the patient has left via either air or by the original posters ambulance. -

Hey klan buddies, I'm not racist, let's go put our white sheets on now. Crotchity says I'm not racist. Poppycock Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk -
Do You Have A Duty To Report ?
Just Plain Ruff replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in Education and Training
Dwayne, just for your info, I was playing devils advocate. What I can say is that I'm not going to report them either. Big freking deal if they have sex. if a kid is conceived, then that's something the families of the two sex starved kids will have to address. I didn't have sex 1000 times or so like you, Jeesh, you must have been a skank per high school speak. But I had my fair share and if I was charged each time I'd still be in jail. -

quite the paradox. sort of like you and your future version cannot occupy the same space and time or bad things happen. -
The Coat Hanger A woman was at work when she received a phone call that her small daughter was very sick with a fever. She left her work and stopped by the pharmacy to get some medication. She got back to her car and found that she had locked her keys in the car. She didn't know what to do, so she called home and told the baby sitter what had happened. The baby sitter told her that the fever was getting worse. She said, "You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door." The woman looked around and found an old rusty coat hanger that had been left on the ground, possibly by someone else who at some time had locked their keys in their car. She looked at the hanger and said, "I don't know how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God to send her help. Within five minutes a beat up old motor cycle pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head. The woman thought, "This is what you sent to help me?" But, she was desperate, so she was also very thankful. The man got off of his cycle and asked if he could help. She said, "Yes, my daughter is very sick. I stopped to get her some medication and I locked my keys in my car. I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?" He said, "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, "Thank You So Much! You are a very nice man." The man replied, "Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison today. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out for about an hour." The woman hugged the man again and with sobbing tears cried out loud, 'Oh, thank you God! You even sent me a Professional!' Is GOD GOOD - or what!

Years away from implementation fully but imagine in the future picking up a patient from one hospital to go to another to get a new kidney that had been printed. Yes printed. Watch this amazing video and just try not to say WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Do You Have A Duty To Report ?
Just Plain Ruff replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in Education and Training
Dwayne, why shouldn't he prosecute both? They both had sex under the age of consent so in a black and white world couldn't they both be charged? I know they wouldn't. Never in a million years. On an offside, why is it that 99.9 percent of the time the male gets charged with rape or statutory rape even when the girl was the one who instigated the sexual relations? You don't hear on the news ever of this. but I do agree, there really isn't a crime here. I think I'd document it on my report and go with the flow. Now if the parents of either kid came back and raised a ruckus then there might be consequences of reporting. -
I would think that you would have to look at it from the state/legal perspective. Just what aspects is she considered an adult? I know that with medical control approval in Missouri I have let a 17 year old refuse transport but that was after I talked to medical control and the parents. I think we need to know what parts of texas law is she considered an adult. I think if one piece says she's an adult then it's across the board but I'm not in texas. Has she been pregnant? Has she had a kid? that makes her an adult and allows her to make her own medical choices in Missouri. Don't kow about texas though Is she living on her own, in her own place, paying all her bills? then in missouri if she is, then she's considered emancipated and she can refuse That's why it's so hard for us on this forum to give you concrete advice unless we are from the state you live in. I can give you all the missouri advice in the world but Missouri laws differ from Texas laws. Does that make sense?

Timmy, I was referring to the comment about writing and typeing that Crotch put out. I pointed out that electronic charting increased the nurses workflow and he said that just becasue they can write and type didn't make it so they could make more money. that's what I was referring to

Yes, most charting is electronic but it's not as easy as it would seem to be in using an electronic medical record. I should know because I put those electronic medical record systems in and you should hear the complaints I get from the nurses. I can guarantee that electronic charting adds 5-15% more time onto the patient care cycle than old paper charting. So please do not say that electronic charting saves time. It doesn't no matter what the electronic medical record system companies will tell you. I've worked with 5 different EHR systems both installing the system and also using them in patient care situations.
