"Paramedic's save lives, EMT's save Paramedics"
Just Plain Ruff replied to medic001918's topic in General EMS Discussion
yeah, I get that thought process as well. I totally do. I'm just an advocate for a single level and not two levels but I know that it will never change so my opinion is simply that, an opinion. Do I dislike my EMT Friends, nope not in the least, do I think to do a bad job? not in the least. Have I thought it through any further than just saying we need a single tier? Nope, why not you ask? becuase I know the reality and the reality is that the status quo will never change. -
"Paramedic's save lives, EMT's save Paramedics"
Just Plain Ruff replied to medic001918's topic in General EMS Discussion
I have always said to get rid of EMT, it's not a popular stance from the schools because EMT Class is a cash cow for them. When you can push through 4-8 emt classes a year at a grand a pop per person, you can imagine how much these classes pull in. -
yes, what mike said, more than likely your trouble will come not from the State but from the employer. Do what you can to get rid of it off your record if possible. It may not be. But again, with it being a non-moving violation, that's a better chance of it not being an issue than a moving violation such as speeding or running a red light or DWI or God forbid the leaving the scene of a a fatality accident while driving drunk. OY VEY. I had a applicant in one of our hiring pools tell us that he had that on his record. We couldn't tell him where the door was quick enough. He kept telling us he was trying to make amends for his wayward actions. We told him to go do it some other way, EMS was not for him.

Yes, your bar was set that day extremely high, and yes he stuck the landing.
-
Not likely. But just to be sure, you should call your State department of EMS and talk to them. There are so many variables depending on states that we really cannot answer this here unless someone from Oklahoma were to answer. But in Missouri, it more than likely would not. Failure to provide proof of insurance in missouri is a non-moving violation(I believe) and that doesn't go against you. But again, don't take my word for it, take the state's word.

I'm sure many long time members would remember Jess http://www.emtcity.com/profile/7460-jess/ She passed away yesterday suddenly from unknown causes. I know that she has had some ICP elevation issues in the past which has knocked her down for the count as well as some infectious disease issues. She leaves a wonderful son named Nicholas who is 4 years old. She did not have life insurance so there is a go fund me set up for funeral expenses as she did not have much money. https://www.gofundme.com/2ex4ujh8?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=email&utm_content=CTA_view_campaign&utm_campaign=donation_receiptv5 She was a really nice gal, I will miss our talks. She had a hard time of it in the past couple of years and was really doing a good job raising her kiddo. Farewell Jess, your shift is over, we've got it from here.

I think what Off Label was meaning was that it was amazing that she suffered minimally. To suffer a cardiac arrest, go on bypass, slowly rewarm, and survive. She was able to walk out of the hospital and return to school and not have missed any days, and all you got out of it that you were glad she didn't miss any school???? I think you missed the entire forest for that Seqouia that your bus hit head on. The amazing result was that she didn't miss any days of school. In the not too distant past, she would have missed months and months of school and had to relearn everything she had ever learned if she had survived, but that she survived and didnt miss any school and was able to return to school is the amazing part of it all, all because of what they were able to do for her with medical advances in care.

http://www.askamanager.org/2016/07/my-best-employee-quit-on-the-spot-because-i-wouldnt-let-her-go-to-her-college-graduation.html Put yourself not in the position of the customer support job, but as the supervisor of your ambulance service. Change out customer Support for EMS operations for your city. I manage a team, and part of their jobs is to provide customer support over the phone. Due to a new product launch, we are expected to provide service outside of our normal hours for a time. This includes some of my team coming in on a day our office is normally closed (based on lowest seniority because no one volunteered). One employee asked to come in two hours after the start time due to her college graduation ceremony being that same day (she was taking night classes part-time in order to earn her degree). I was unable to grant her request because she was the employee with the lowest seniority and we need coverage for that day. I said that if she could find someone to replace her for those two hours, she could start later. She asked her coworkers, but no one was willing to come in on their day off. After she asked around, some people who were not scheduled for the overtime did switch shifts with other people (but not her) and volunteered to take on overtime from others who were scheduled, but these people are friends outside of work, and as long as there is coverage I don’t interfere if people want to give or take overtime of their own accord. (Caveat: I did intervene and switch one person’s end time because they had concert tickets that they had already paid for, but this was a special circumstance because there was cost involved.) I told this team member that she could not start two hours late and that she would have to skip the ceremony. An hour later, she handed me her work ID and a list of all the times she had worked late/come in early/worked overtime for each and every one of her coworkers. Then she quit on the spot. I’m a bit upset because she was my best employee by far. Her work was excellent, she never missed a day of work in the six years she worked here, and she was my go-to person for weekends and holidays. Even though she doesn’t work here any longer, I want to reach out and tell her that quitting without notice because she didn’t get her way isn’t exactly professional. I only want to do this because she was an otherwise great employee, and I don’t want her to derail her career by doing this again and thinking it is okay. She was raised in a few dozen different foster homes and has no living family. She was homeless for a bit after she turned 18 and besides us she doesn’t have anyone in her life that has ever had professional employment. This is the only job she has had. Since she’s never had anyone to teach her professional norms, I want to help her so she doesn’t make the same mistake again. What do you think is the best way for me to do this? How would you handle this situation instead???? If you would not bend over backwards to accomodate this employee's request, then you are not a leader, you are a poor excuse for a manager and should re-examine your skills as a manager. And take a look at the last paragraph - where does this person go wrong in this paragraph??? There is so much wrong with the way the manager handled this situation, that begs to ask the question, should this person even be a manager or a supervisor?

Hopefully your bag doesn't have 30 year old stock ha ha ha ha

Am I wrong here but why are we giving narcan as a diagnostic tool when the signs and symptoms of a narcotic overdose are not present???? Am I missing something, did I miss something in one of my recent CEU classes? Correct me if I'm wrong, but do we give narcan for this type of problem. I mean if the signs and symptoms of a narcotic overdose are NOT there, then why the hell are you even considering giving narcan???? I mean, I've been out of the field for a couple of years but I never gave narcan for a patient who didn't exhibit the signs or symptoms of a narcotic overdose. I remember when we used to routinely give Romazicon for benzo overdoses just for the diagnostic side of things and look what happened to many patients!!!!! I read the responses to your survey on EMTLife and they were pretty harsh but they were correct. I would have thought that you might have re-worked your survey before you submitted it here. Did you re-work the questions? I suspect not because some of the suggestions were not heeded. I do wish you luck, but honestly, I would have expected a more professional survey from a 3rd semester paramedic student. Maybe you should take all the criticism that you've received and re-word the survey and then re-submit it for us to take.

Unfortunately, we made that horrible mistake once and have since parted ways with that pathetic excuse for a medical director. I mean I cannot in good conscience have a medical director who is any where near being involved in a investigation and that meeting on the jet plane was the last straw. It has also come to light that a home grown protocol farm has been being run out of a certain ERDoc's hidden room in his prepper bunker which soon will be exposed for what it is, a Paramedic mill where if you have $48,000 you too can get a paramedic diploma in 14 weeks. Their motto is "you pay, you play" or "Any condition can be treated with Diesel" and finally the last but most memorable school slogan is "EMT's save medics, but not from this medic mill" So who would you rather vote for, a proven medic mill owner and a known associate of a woman who didn't give the standing orders to any but the richest people in the upper part of MIchigan and was heard saying at her testimony when asked why she didn't give the right meds to anyone but the rich people, she said "in the immortal words of Maria "medic" Antoinnette, Let them get expired drugs" Who do you want running this country? The choice is yours. Do the right thing!!!
-
That's right, everyone here is an ambulance driver, especially that ole fart ERDOC, But don't let him fool you, his expanded standing orders include EOA's and Mast pants. He also won't let you do anything other than bolus'es of Diesel in all but the most extreme of cases, that's the extent of his expanded standing orders. Don't let him fool ya, he's ful of HOT AIR, and doesn't deserve your vote. In fact, he was seen getting off of a private Jet after a recent meeting with the AG where it was rumored that he was discussing the pending case of his campaign manager who is under investigation for not following those same standing orders that he is promising you that he will provide you if he is elected. NOW HOW can you trust him to give you expanded standing orders when his own campaign manager cannot even provide them to the most vulnerable population in america, the richest citizens in the state of Michigan. You cannot, so it's obvious who supports both citizens and EMS Colleagues the most!!!!!! YES ME!!!!!! I promise the ability of every EMT to give nasal narcan and stadol as well as each paramedic that goes through my own personally developed expanded practice program will get to call themselves a "extreme expanded expertly crafted community paramedic" There is no service in the country that won't hire you and make you their SUPER SUPERvisor. And for everyone who completes my program, you will get your own laryngoscope personally engraved by none other than Me and the Donald. MIC Drop

I voted for him last time, look what that got us?
-
Trump maybe Hillary - I'd rather have a coloscopy, open heart surgery and a root canal all at the same time without anesthesia than vote for her Brexit - Nigel had a mic drop speech in partliament yesterday, The vote was just a referendum and not a binding vote, so the UK leaders don't have to honor the vote if they dont' want to. Millions of britains are now saying they didn't know what they were voting for. That's like our politicians saying "we didn't know what was in the Obamacare bill, but you have to pass it to know what's in it!" Over the long run, if Britain doesn't leave the UK, the short term memory of the world will just say "whatever" and go on with things. On the flip side, if Britain actually leaves and it's a positive thing, then look to France and then Greece to leave next.

Stethoscope Repair- DIY or send it in?
Just Plain Ruff replied to Eydawn's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
First off is that stethoscope that you bought still under warranty? if it is, then send it back and tell them you want a new one or your money back. The picture that MTC rentals is using sure looks like a Littman to me, Is it a littman or a knock off? If it's a knock off then I think you got ripped off if it broke already unless you have had it more than a year. I have the same two Littmans I purchased when I became a medic and apart from needing regular cleaning, new plastic diaphragms and ear pieces, they still work excellently. Plus I think you paid about 50 bucks too much for a stethoscope to break so soon. But then again maybe you have had it for like years and it just broke. But as for your question - the Littman is definately worth your money. -
so this thread about voting didn't make it to the epic thread that you so hoped did it?
-
alas, thank you for that praise and complements, It truly was a off the cuff thread response. I'm humbled that you enjoyed it.

yeah I get that Doc, but they outlined what possibly could happen. what I was referring to was the hundreds of thousands of people who were complaining that they voted to leave the union but didn't know what that meant. Many have admitted that they had NOT a single iota of understanding of what could happen. And yet, now they are complaining because they "didn't know". I was just comparing that to our US voters who vote based on gender, race, they like how the person looks, how they talk, how they walk, how they do anything other than where they stand on the issues that will directly affect those voters come the next 2-6 years(depending on who they voted for and for what office) and also for the downstream effects many many years down the road. That's what I was alluding to in my original comment.

I never win anything, last time I won something it was a participation award on a baseball team that had a record of 2 and 31 and I had a total of 4 at bats and 1 hour of playing time. My dad wouldn't let me quit because he had paid 550 bucks for the uniform and fees for me to be on the team. Yes I truly sucked and honestly didn't deserve a participation award, but I won it because everyone gets a participation award. I vowed from then on out that I would never allow my kids to get those types of awards if they didn't contribute to the teams success.

some privates services are good, some private ambulance services are bad, someone touching your privates can be good, someone touching them can be bad. Depends upon the situation which is what you have with Private ambulance services. I've worked for both, and let me tell you, it runs the gamut of which I'd rather have touching my privates. I had one service that gave me a 1K bonus at christmas and treated me and the group really really well until AMR Bought em and then they went to hell in a hand basket and the work environment just sucked donkey balls after that. You really have to do your homework. Find the crews parked waiting for calls and talk to them, get their feel and bring em water and that will help bring them out of their shell to open up to you maybe. But again, you have to do your homework. When you are doing your clinicals in the hospital, ask the hospital staff what they think of XYZ service? They will tell you.

well I'll bite, I can't imagine why anyone in Britain would vote for something with such enormous consequences without knowing what leaving the EU really meant. oh wait, that's like our super PHD educated voters here voting for either a Under FBI investigation candidate or a blowhard say anything candidate. Not sure which country can be dumber????? In november we will know.

First time EMT-B carry on gear?
Just Plain Ruff replied to EMTDenny's topic in General EMS Discussion
no, I have given it as a gift to a new grad emt. He was mucho grateful. -
I worked in an ER as a medic. Night shift medics did more managing airways than day shift because the anesthetists didn't work at night. Plus we also did most of what we could do on the street in the ER as well. In my ER we also hung blood and foley catheterized as well. It depends on the hospital you work at. But the hospital I worked at was rural in nature and operated on a small staff at night. If you are looking to work for a medium size hospital with a good amount of services then yes you will more than likely be a tech on any shift.
