  1. I have forgiven them. Do I like the fact that what they did required my forgiveness according to my faith, not really but I do forgive them. Do I hate them for what they did, sure but You can forgive the action while hating the action too. What I don't understand is this, yes we have to have a common enemy but seriously, not all muslims did this. Why are we lumping all muslims together just because of the actions of a few of more than a few? I know several muslims and they do not believe the way that these 15 did. They abhor what they did. they also abhor what has been the end result which is the vilification of an entire religion. Timothy McVeigh was a christian. He took down the Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma. I don't vilify all christians based on McVeigh's skewed values and thought processes. ON the same hand, I don't vilify all muslims. Love the sinner not the sin. Does this mosque or cultural center directly impact my life? Nope not at all. What directly impacts my life is a very very small corner of the world which includes my job, my family, my church, my friends and my locality. Might it be different if I lived in NYC? Probably. But I dont' think it would. Should there be a furor over this? no I don't believe that either. But... I do see why everyone is so pissed off but I think that those opposing this mosque and those that support it have their blinders on. Those who support it refuse to consider other less sensitive sites. Those who oppose it refuse to allow it being built. Some even oppose it being built anywhere in NYC. I don't see why Obama just doesn't have a beer summit between the leader of the support and the leader of the opposition. I'm sure that the furor will subside just like the race issue subsided after the First Beer Summit.
  2. I can see it now. "All volunteers are murderers" heck if it works for "All terrorists are muslim" then I'm sure they can make it work for that one.
  3. One dark night in the small town of Brooklyn,NY, a fire started inside the local sausage factory. In a blink, the building was engulfed in flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the first volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, All of our secret sausage recipes are in the vault in the center of the plant. They have to be saved, so I will donate $50,000 to the fire company that brings them out and delivers them to me. But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in because the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer to extricate the secret recipes was now $100,000 to the fire department that could save them. Suddenly, from up the road, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the fire engine of the nearby Bensonhurst, NY volunteer fire department, composed mainly of Italian firefighters over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, the little run - down fire engine, operated by these Italian firefighters, passed fire engines parked outside the plant, and drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched in amazement as the Italian old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire as if they were fighting to save their own lives. Within a short time, the Bensonhurst old timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret recipes. The grateful sausage company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman accomplishment he was raising the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave elderly Italian firefighters. A TV news crew rushed in after capturing the event on film. The 'on camera' reporter asked the Italian fire chief, 'What are you going to do with all that money?' 'Wella,' said Chief Pasquale De Luccinellavanti, the 75 year - old fire chief, 'de fursta tinga we gonnna do isza fixa de brakes on dat freackinna truck!!'
  4. A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Larry stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Larry?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!' _________________________________________________________________________________ The math teacher saw that Larry wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Larry! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Larry quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!' ________________________________________________________________________________ Larry's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him. Larry asked,"Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture? " ___________________________________________________________________________________ Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?' His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....'
  5. At the time that I did what I did we had not even considered implementing any type of surgical airway. Even needle cric's were not allowed. I have only had two FBAO's and both ended up being arrests. The first was a marshmallow inhaled - we pushed our tube through the sticky goo and even though she had pneumonia from the marshmallow, she survived without any negative problems The second was the Steak and I already told you what happened on him. Would I do it again, yes if I did not have a surgical airway option.
  6. I have indeed had this experience. 29 year old male, choking. Arrived to find patient in Arrest. Attempted to intubate, total blockage. Tried magill's, couldn't get it grabbed. Finally pushed it down into the right mainstem. Got an airway, ventillated and able to get a pulse back. Arrived at hospital, they worked him. Got him to the ICU. He was discharged with a moderate level of brain damage. doc's were not happy that I shoved the foreign body which was a piece of well chewed steak into his right mainstem but you know what, they guy is alive, he knows his family, he had to relearn to talk and to do some basic things but in the end, no matter how upset the docs were in having to bronch the guy, He's alive and well living a semi productive life in the community. Our protocol states if cannot pull with Magill's then moving it down to the right mainstem is an option. I know the patient thanks us.
  7. I'll echo what Doc said. Seconds rarely count and if they do then the patient is probably destined for the morgue rather than an ER. If they die in the ambulance, the grim reaper was standing right next to you waiting for you to move enough for him to reach in and take the patient. (I don't believe in the Grim reaper but it's a good analogy) ONe thing never to say when you get to the patient "Holy Shyte" even if everything in your being is saying that. There will be things that you never knew a body can have happen to it and it is your job to make that unbridled Chaos into manageable chaos. To do that merely takes time in the field. Approach every patient as a learning experience and never take that for granted. You may not learn a new technique or new skill or get to apply your medical skill but you will learn something if you listen and look for it. It may be learning history or personal info that you can use in the future on a similar patient. Never take any type of patient for granted, hold the little old ladies or man's hand during the trip back to the Nursing home. Get on a childs level, don't stand over them. Be truthful and honest in all you do. If you go by the above, your "stage fright" will go away, maybe not immediately but soon.
  8. That was a good overall read. Good background piece. I am all for keeping the government out of religion. They can't manage money, programs and many other things so would their getting involved in religion more than they are now be a good thing. I THINK NOT. tongue in cheek but being serious here. I do believe a president does have the right to endorse his religion but when he begins to force that religion on others is where the line needs to be drawn. I do not believe that anyone has the right to shove or force their religion upon someone else. My son knows I'm religious. I have taught him in his 7 years of life that he is free to believe however he wants to believe. For right now I know he is only mimicking me and reflecting my religious views but when he turns 12 or 15 or 18 and he goes a different way, will I be disappointed, probably. Will I be mad? nope. I have tried to instill in him the ability to chose and make his own decisions on everything. My job is to give him all the options and help him make the right decision. It may not be the decision I like or want him to make but if he gives me good reasons why he believes the way he does, then who am I to force him to change his mind or mindset. AK I know you have done the same with your kids.
  9. I know the history of establishing mosques at sites of conquest. I really do know that. I didn't until recently but I do. But the 3 muslims that I talked to at my hotel said that this is not truly a mosque as it encompasses more than what a mosque allows to be truly considered a mosque. If a building does more than what a mosque represents then it's not a mosque. Symantics of course. These three men who I talked to said they thought that placement of this center so close to Ground Zero was a terrible idea. They called it "a stupid idea" They are involved in their mosques quite a bit and they are from New York. they said that the organizers of this mosque were truly out of touch with the majority of their muslim brethren but they also said that Obama is truly out of touch with the majority of American people. As we parted ways they blessed me in the name of Allah and I did the same in the name of God. Parting as good participants in a great 2 hour discussion over heinekens and sandwiches. I say this not to impart any wisdom or anything but Kum Bay Yah! was out in force that day.
  10. Ironically (sic) AK, I have done exactly what you said in the past. I actually took several college level courses that dealth with those types of groups, not from a negative viewpoint because the instructor was a ACLU attorney and someone pretty high up in the KC MO ACLU "Dick Kurtenbach" I hope I spelled his name right. I spent time at a secular student organization (during college in 1990 -1992). I do read the other points of view, I am not offended or angry at you suspecting I won't. I understand your experience but on the other hand I suspect that many of the Atheist alliance and secular student organizations won't go to the National site of the Baptist faith or the Catholic faith not because they will never take the time to develop the interest but it is much easier and comfortable to simply ignore them all and keep on keeping on. If you get my thought process too. So how bout that beer. I probably can't give you more of why I believe what I believe because I just believe it but you know from our past interactions that I am willing to listen and I do not resort to name calling, negative retort and all that.
  11. Ak, that was exactly the response I wanted. I think we are on the same page on some of this. The mosque does not affect me in any way. I loved your last comment. It sort of hit the nail on the head, at least for me.
  12. What is really sad is that you have to dumb it down at all to fit the needs of the students. Who's fault is it that you have to do that? The students themselves who have been fed education that only teaches to the test The education system itself The instructors who don't stand up to the dumbing down crowd and just acquiesce because in order to get their books published or even to teach have to follow the rules of the above two groups I had an instructor in college who taught what he wanted to teach and gave tests that required students to read his additional reading assignments which were in addition to the textbook for the class. His tests were some of the hardest tests I've ever taken, exams routinely lasted 2-4 hours. Midterms were set for 4 hours. Finals were minimally 4 hours. We were in his class for 6 hours a week. There is more to this incredible instructor and his ways that I'd explain but don't have time to do so. When I was finished with his class, my understanding of the course was nearly graduate level in nature. I've had other instructors which would tell the students "This is going ot be on the test" "Remember this, it's on the test" They taught to the test only. NO additional info given, just what was on the test. These instructors were the EMS instructors. Funny thing, I went to a court reporter school website and saw that their program length was 2 years minimum. My medic course was 10 months. To be a translator for the court system(federal) I have a friend who has been studying and taking her translator courses to translate for the federal court system for 3 years now. She has a year to go. She needs that additional year to also translate for the FBI During their investigatory wiretaps. She is in training with another person for another year and then she gets to go out on her own to do the wiretap translation. So my education pales in comparison to these two careers. So why dumb it down? Teach what you teach and see your students blossom and learn things that they didn't expect.
  13. So AK let me ask you this. I am not asking to start an argument so let me be clear on that. You have very eloquently pointed out that you are forced to deal with Christianity being forced on to you every day. What are you doing in your actions to turn the tide so to speak? If this is not an appropriate discussion for the thread please let's discuss this via pm's or better yet a Beer Summit somewhere in orlando, you know I'm sort of living in the Orlando area through the end of the year. I'm always open to hear a opposing from my view point viewpoint if that makes sense. I do believe that the framers did have a certain form of society in mind after the Declaration and the constitution but I do agree that it has become something that they truly would not be happy about now. Every one of us on this board has strong opinions on this matter, from religion to government. That's why the old adage is tru - don't talk about politics, religion or money in friendly conversation.
  14. ok, after 22 pages of often vehement opinion and others opinions that are more moderate and tempered. I have a couple of questions that I think if posted in the mosque discussion would get missed or not answered. I would like to know a couple of things 1. After seeing some of the vehement responses on the referenced thread, have you forgiven the attackers? I ask this not from a christian basis or background, but as a person, have you forgiven the attackers for doing what they did? It's perfectly fine with me if you say you have not. But why have you not forgiven them? 2. If a mosque is built at the site of the one proposed, how does having this building built affect your life? Does it directly affect your personal life? If it does, please explain. Or is it just the thought of this building and what it represents which is Islam that offends you. 3. It is my understanding from a couple of Muslim men I talked to in Orlando about this mosque in New York, they say this isn't truly a Mosque in the sense of it being a mosque. A Mosque is a building that is specifically built for worshipping Allah and if there are other activities like a gynasium and cultural center housed inside the building then it cannot be considered a Mosque. (AK Correct me if these guys told me wrong). The 3 men I talked to over a couple of beers at the hotel told me that it's the media interpretation and the american interpretation of Mosque that is wrong. So... if this is not truly a Mosque then do you think the furor over this should be the same or less? 4. well that's all the questions I have. thanks for reading.
  15. Fair enough AK, you are right, the Only in America was an ignorant statement but not one that I meant to make. I do not know about many other cultures except what I read, watch on the news outlets and hear about from others that I know. Consider that ignorant statement corrected for future reference.
  16. Ok, AK You have been there and I bow to your understanding but let me ask you this 15 Christians fly 4 planes into various buildings in Mecca. They kill 3500 or so people in doing so. Fast forward 9 years into the future and a Christian Group decides they are going to build a Cathedral or a Temple or some religious building 2 blocks away from the site of where those 3500 people died. They call it a cultural center but there is a place for christians to worship in this cultural center. You are telling me that this would be welcomed with open arms because they manage their freedom better? You are saying that this would be a welcome discussion in Mecca? If you can tell me that this cultural center would be welcomed then I'll not question you further but if you can't then I have to disagree with you calling my last post ignorant. You know me, I'm always open to being shown where I'm wrong. But I truly don't think that this discussion would be welcomed in Mecca. Maybe I am truly taking the american or US view point but I do try to see all sides of the argument.
  17. When you ever decide to write a paramedic book as well as design your paramedic class, I'd like to be the first to sign up and take it from you. You could be the next Bryan Bledsoe or Nancy Caroline. Any chance you need a reviewer for your class notes?
  18. I don't want to hold the US to the same standards as Saudi Arabia. That would be silly.
  19. Consider this. Our education system sucks. I would bet that this kid has never had anyone critique him or give him constructive criticism? I know that I didn't get that during my period of high school years except from one or two teachers. I would bet that having to act like an adult is a foreign term to this kid. Best thing to do is this, sit him down with your paramedic partner and discuss the document from Kevkei and tell him that you are not the bad guy but you are the guy he has been paired with to be evaluated. This is more than likely a foreign concept to him and laying the ground rules for him now instead of 4 more shifts down the road can make or break this kid and his survival on the squad. If he still insists on not coming to you then assign him to someone else and if he still insists on not following the new preceptor or he doesn't go to the preceptor and goes to that preceptors partner then maybe it's time to cut him loose and put him back into the general population of people who have been told that they don't qualify. He might eventually be the best medic/emt that God ever put out there, but then again maybe not. Not tryin to be so harsh but this is an adult career and if he wants to play or work with the adults he has to get over his mamby pamby attitude.
  20. We aren't talking about any other country other than the USA> Building a synagogue in Mecca would never happen because their leaders would squash the building of that synoagogue. There is no freedom of religion in Mecca so that's a moot point. JP, I don't believe we are talking about Japan. We are not talking about Mecca, nor are we talking about Germany or any other country. Those arguments are moot. We are only talking about america. In Mecca there would be no discussion even starting, in Hiroshima same thing. Nagasaki nope, not there either. Only in America do we even get to discuss this type of thing. We need to cherish that freedom. If we were in Mecca this discussion would be quickly stopped.
  21. I can't believe I'm going to partially agree with Olberman but he had some really good points. What Olberman did not point out other than pointing out that the hate against the muslims and their mosque puts them in more danger than those who disagree wiht the mosque What we all are also forgetting is that this mosque is not being built on ground zero ground, it's two blocks away from the edge of ground zero. It's also not truly a mosque.... Yep that's right. It's 13 stories with a community center background, a culinary school, a fitness center and the top two stories will be a prayer area. It includes a place to pray to allah but for it to be considered a mosque it needs to only be set up for a mosque and not anything else. To have the culinary school and fitness center does not in the muslim terms make it a mosque I spent an hour outside my hotel room next to the pool discussing this very thing with 3 muslim new Yorkers. All three thought that the organizers were nuts in trying to put it there, they said it was inconsiderate and rude but they said that the organizers have every right to build what they want to build. They said the ground zero was hallowed ground and the place the mosque(?) was being built was in an area that had a strip club in the general vicinity. Yes they say that potential placement was a terrible idea but if you keep them from building there then you run the risk of keeping a christian church, or serbian church, or synagogue or whatever else from being built on private property. We cannot take the right of private property away. We got even further into this discussion but the bottom line for these guys was let them build it.
  22. I have a friend who is doing just this. His initial funding is rapidly dwindling down. I think his initial funding from a outside investor was about 3mil. He hasn't even begun ops' yet. You will also need a need and necessity hearing to be able to start a service up at least in missouri. You will have to prove that the service you are trying to cover has poor coverage and you can provide better. Do waht others here say, buy a currently operating. Can we ask how much money you have to start this up with?
  23. Again the mosque will be built after lots of legal wrangling and law suits and people shaking the bully pulpit and all that but in the end, the mosque builders don't give a good god dang about anyone but themselves. They don't care how many people are against it they just want the damn thing built and they have American political correctness in their corner. It's a kiss my ass thought process from the organizers and who gives a god darn what sensitivities it affects. Boy will we be surprised when a dirty bomb goes off in the basement of this building and kills even more than the 9/11 attacks. That will be the crowning glory of this mosque. And if that happens we can all go back to our sensitivities and say "We thought they meant no harm, it was a cultural outreach center. They said they meant no harm" If the above situation happens we only have ourselves to blame on this one. Remember giving away rights is easy, it's getting them back when you realize what the damage of taking them away which is the hard part. Once gone, they don't come back.
  24. Hertz, you didn't read the original post did you Here is what the OP (uglyemt) wrote I will give an exact description of the discharge paperwork that I understand but can wrap my head around right now.
