  1. Terri Stupid is as stupid does. Bad form Diazepam
  2. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO REPARATIONS NO NO NO NO There is no reason to pay people today for what was done 160 years ago. It's just more government liberals who think that government is the answer. If any asshat senator and representative votes for this he should be ashamed. It's just a vote buying scheme for our government to get the african american vote. If they are going to pay reparations to the African American community then they had better pay reparations for the Native Americans. This is an offensive plan to me and everyone I have met.
  3. Yeah 100% go figure, it turns out that earlier in the day the patient got an EJ iv. It also turns out that we discussed his case with his psych doc and the psych doc says that he is not a true seizure patient but pseudo seizure patient and he is a great faker at being unconscious. I had a feeling he was faking but the IO was not placed based on that feeling though. I could have gone with a EJ but hey, the IO was handy. I pinched the back of his arm with all my might, to the point of hurting myself, and he didn't flinch. His resps were about 16-20
  4. what other clarification do you all need? I'm all for providing clarification. Just tell me what you want to know.
  5. good evening everyone, I placed my first EZ-IO on a unconscious seizure patient tonight. Some questions I have The patient is a seizure patient with a glasgow of 3 and no response to painful stimuli but with a good pulse ox of 100% So what I have questions about is this. There are three different types of needles pediatric for 3-39 kg adult for 40kg and up and LD needles for excessive tissue Soooooooo, I used the LD needle with good placement, good flushing and I was able to give 5mg valium IO without problems. The patient had a pretty good painful response but it was a short lived response when I pushed the valium. My question is this How long will the pain continue to happen if we don't use lidocaine. (we don't carry lidocaine for this IO device) Could we use the lidocaine pre-fill that is used on codes? What do you who have inserted the EZIO device use for infusing the fluiids? As for removal - the instructions state take a luer lock syringe and tighten it up, then twist it clockwise. I did this removal technique and the IO came out after several turns and when the IO completely came out the patient stated that it hurt quite a bit. What are the things to tell a patient to look for when they have had one of these and are dismissed from the ER? Common things to tell patients to watch for. My concern is that if the patient is not given good follow up instructions and aftercare instructions that a bone infection could result since this is a direct opening into the bone. Any suggestions and information is appreciated.
  6. Annie, well put but the racism card or slavery card is pulled out any time that that person does not have anything useful to bring to the fore. Also, like I said earlier, anytime the racism card is used, any useful dialogue is no longer possible.
  7. actually I have known many emt's and paramedics to be who failed the nat reg test or just the state test when nat reg was not around and I was one of them. The pressure when I was taking the class was that I spent 2 years in a program putting in manymany hours and if you failed it twice you were done. So yes you can get as depressed as the person in the original article was. I know for fact as I dated a couple of those truly depressed people. You say it's only a test yet it's a test that you have put your heart and soul into and to fail twice or thrice can be a real stressor.
  8. If your thinking of getting a Tazer for your wedding anniversary. THINK AGAIN ………… J Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this: Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse- sized tazer. The effects of the tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave. Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (load ed with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!' What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.. .? I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dipshit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . HOLY MOTHER OF GOD . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HELL!!! I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room. Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a tazer, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.. A three second burst would be considered conservative? IT HURT LIKE HELL!!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I pooped on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return! P.S... My wife, can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it! If you think education is difficult, try being stupid
  9. I was just watching a news show about these types of landings and more and more of them are actually staged. They are saying this is becoming common place for pilots who want a thrill or two to do this type of emergency landing and saying that the engine stalled. I personally think some are fake some are real. I cannot remember the network I was watching that said this but it may have either been fox or one of my local stations.
  10. It all boils down to that Mobey, if America was so bad then there are always other places to move to. Sort of like the celebrities who said "If Bush is re-elected they are going to move to france" Yet not one of those sniveling idiots made good on their promises.
  11. I'm playing the Race card. Most white people are obese so this study must be racist.
  12. Dust, you are right again but in a perfect world blacks would no longer be able to say "I'm black so I can't get ahead" or "woe is me, the white man is holding me back" The race card will continue to be played, fair or not, but that is the way that the generation before us and this generation feels. As for the African American, if you were born in the united states then you are an american, not an African American because you did not come from africa. You came from a black woman and black man who also more than likely were born in america. The only ones who can say they are true african american are those who immigrated from AFrica and settled in america. If you were born here you are an american, not african american. My ancestors came from Scotland and I don't call myself a Scottish American, I call myself an American. I also agree with you that if you cannot get ahead of the slavery argument and slavery ended 160 or so years ago, then you might be too stupid to pass any type of standardized tests. I have no sympathy for those who continue to use the race card because to me it only shows your stupidity when you use it. It's a time worn argument that people who have no solutions use because that effectively ends the argument because the other person becomes intimidated and cowtowed into shutting up. Once the race card is used the person using it effectively and theoretically ends all intelligent discourse from here on out. It's time for some in the african american population to get over the slavery argument and get on with their lives and produce intelligent discourse instead of "hatred and discontent"
  13. Why is it that every time we have this type of discussion someone brings up racism, Blacks are dumber than whites, slavery. It's like saying that since my son's doing poorly in school and he is 1/16th american indian that this is the reason that he is doing poorly in school. It's time to give the Slavery argument a rest. It's time to give the "a poor black man can't get anywhere in this country because he's black." a rest. That argument sailed when Obama was elected president. I bet Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are soon to be out of a job. The race card sailed when Obama became president.
  14. I had a scene safety paper published by a now defunct ems journal. I'll see if I have it anymore.
  15. This exact call is the reason why any good EMT or Paramedic program will have a reputable attorney give the lecture on medico-legal in class. That attorney should be one who deals with these types of legal issues on a daily basis. More than likely this attorney should be one employed or on retainer by a local ambulance service. It is also one of those calls that proves the need for a more indepth level of instruction than what I was given which was 1 hour of medical legal mumbo jumbo. If you do not have the basic education on this issue then it is YOUR responsibility to get the education. The OP is caught between a rock and a hard place where he believes something is Hinky yet both the medic, the stupidvisor and the parents all agree that what happened, which was WRONG, was indeed ok. If you don't speak up about something then your silence gives tacit approval that you agree and go along with what is happening. In the end, it's your ASS on the line in court.
  16. cute video, the girl is really cute though. I do like the song.
  17. How about Scene Safety.
  18. It's the same feeling you get when you see your son jump off the top bunk onto the floor or you see him jump into 43 degree water (with a life Jacket on of course).
  19. We have this exact same issue at our department. Our human resources department says that we cannot institute a physical agility requirement on anyone but new hires because they consider us to be grandfathered in and she is included. Our laws in the states of course are different than yours.
  20. But was that medic working under the grace period or working under a truly expired license? I think that this is the gray area we are looking at right now.
  21. With a sugar of 175, I highly doubt it was a diabetic related issue. A blood sugar of 175 rarely, if ever, causes any symptoms. And diabetic coma occurs with prolonged blood sugar extremes—blood sugar that's either too high or too low for too long, such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome (a reading of 600 mm/dL); or hypoglycemia—a sugar level less than 80, but coma usually sets in with levels much lower than that I am a type II diabetic, when my sugar gets to 175 or so I begin to have a screamingly severe headache, sweat, nausea and some vomiting. I've not had to call EMS but when I get to that number I know that I have either forgotten to take my glucophage for the prescribed time or I ate something I'm not supposed to. My sugars rarely if ever get above 125 and 90% of the time run from 75-110. So I do get symptoms with a sugar of 175.
  22. Let me tell you, my grandmother was in the nursing home until she passed away a month ago. My mother shows me all the medical bills that they get because well she is sort of clueless when it comes to what a cbc is for and all that. My mother also knows when an ambulance call is made and why it's made. If she had asked me why a ambulance crew started a line and put my grandmother on oxgen then I will request the report from the ambulance service. If the report is written in a way that makes me think that they medic started a Line just to stick it to the nursing home then I'm gonna be down at the local ambulance service discussing this with that medic's supervisor. I am going to advise my mother to refuse to pay for the IV which is what medicare will have already done. To start an IV on a patient just to stick it to the nursing home is shitty piss poor treatment bordering on abuse or assault and I'm probably going to go to the state on this one. That is just the impression we as providers give when we do this and it makes ALL of us look like fricking morons, no better than those slack jawed nursing home idiots one person referred to earlier. Remember this people, the nurses do not just decide to send the patient. They call the doctor and get his order to transport so why don't we put the blame on where the blame needs to go - the physician for ordering the transport. I know many nursing home nurses personally and they don't call us just to wake us up, well maybe some of them do in order to return the nastiness that we sometimes give them. Many of my nursing home friends tell me that they are to call the physician for everything from a slight fever up to cardiac arrest. Some of them tell me they cannot even call EMS for a patient in cardiac arrest, they have to get ahold of the doc and then the doc says go ahead and call ems or just let the patient pass. When your hands are tied like some nursing homes hands are tied they don't have much of a choice of when they call you. Cut these people a little slack. Besides, these same nursing homes may be the one taking care of you when you get old and gray and what comes around goes around, if you are an asshole to their staff they might not be so kind to you when you arrive as a patient. "Hey Mabel, this new patient, he's the asshole who kept criticising us for calling his ambulance and interrupting his precious sleeping time while we were awake. Let's let him sleep in his urine tonight and say we didn't find it till this morning"
  23. Well I think I remember the running total that the pirates have taken in in the past year or so being around 45million dollars in ransoms. I think that that money to them outweighs the cost of a few hostages turned dead. I can't see the pirates worrying about 3 of their dead pirate thugs, thats just 3 less pirates that have to be paid. 45 million is a pretty big persuader.
  24. No this will not be the way it happens, he will be freed in order to foster better relations with the Somali government. He may even get out on asylum and lead a productive criminal life in the good ole USA.
