  1. Matt, I have a lot of time on my hands when I'm working. I'll be editor number 2. Any reason to work with The Illustrious Eydawn I get, I take.
  2. Ok, I got information on this from the publisher. He states that it indeed said this in the book but he is unable to verify it anywhere else so they are removing that part from the article. they are also going to be retiring this particular CEU article.
  3. yes they have all become walmart greeters. The new Walmart greeting is "Welcome to Walmart, get your shit and get out"
  4. I hope you saw the sarcasm in that post CB
  5. I was reading a OB book the other day and found an answer but it wasn't one I wanted to hear or see. Scary. does anyone know the answer I am referring too? The book is about 11 years old though.
  6. Yeah, It's been a long time since I've had to figure up the formula for dopamine. I've always had the cheat sheet resource or the fiield guide. But yes I can still do it on paper if needed.
  7. Ok, since nobody else is chiming in here is one off the top of my head. Woman in active labor, child is stuck in the birth canal due to shoulder distocia, (I think I have that right). What is your treatment.
  8. Bad mojo batman. Someone there should have pushed for a transfer to a facility who would take him. unfortunately with his weight he would be a terrible candidate for open heart and I can honestly believe that he would be too big for the table. I am in no way second guessing your treatment nor your advocacy for this patient but if this is the way they would treat one of their own, how do they treat those who are not their own? Most facilities would go the extra mile for one of their ER employees yet it seems like they dropped the ball on this one. I hope and pray he did ok. I know you are frustrated with this situation but sometimes you just have to accept it and go on. Hopefully this guy did ok.
  9. I have no problem using my field guide for this problem nor do I have a problem using a drip chart that helps me out. I have no problem admitting that I use a cheat sheet every time I start a dopamine, nitroprusside, dobutamine or epi drip. As long as the drip rate chart is correct I have no problem using it. This does not make anyone a lesser medic.
  10. Our town police used to have a zero tolerance on ambulance abuse. Our service also used to have a zero tolerance. I had a woman who called 911 for chest pain. When we got there she met us at the ambulance with her purse and she was made up like a 4 dollar you know who. She refused any care, she just got in the ambulance and got on the cot. We arrived at the hospital and took her in to the ER. She immediately got up and walked out. I followed her over across the street all the while having PD arrive. She walked in the local drinking establishment. The officers walked in behind her, cuffed her and arrested her for 911 abuse. She went to jail. plain and simple as that, abuse 911, go directly to jail.
  11. smashing idea. I'll get to work on some questions tonight.
  12. Michael, I curse you for sending me to the Lolcat bible. I will never be the same. The writers of that bible have way way way too much time on their hands.
  13. I am always in the car with the patient unless I'm the 2nd paramedic(not primary care giver). As for any other type rescue - I have no specialized experience or training to be of any good on a high angle, confined space or swiftwater rescue. I will get in the confined space with the patient if asked but mostly I wait for the fire department to get the patient to me. I have had one high angle rescue and I was terrified all the way down. But the patient required bagging so It was me or no-one. I think I had to re-evaluate my will and last testament after that one. I don't have any problem in confined spaces nor in caves but I do not like heights nor do I like swiftwater - as a matter of fact I will not go in to swift water without 10 ropes and 5 life jackets and a Scuba tank and regulator is how much I dislike swiftwater. If you are not trained to do it, then DO NOT DO IT>
  14. I saw one patient who had a toothache(needless call for EMS but hey, you call we haul) from a farming community and they heard from a friend that if you go out to the corn field and find a worm in an ear of corn that you place that worm on the tooth area that hurts. The worm will eat whatever infection is in there and also the worms saliva will numb down the area. They said "it didn't work well" but the worm did eat a hole in their gum which allowed some of the pus from the abcess to drain thus allowing the antibiotics to start working quicker that the ER prescribed. Not sure if it really did work but the Pilgrims did it way back then, so why not us do it now.
  15. morphine fentanyl that's what we have
  16. I am in agreement with Crotch on this one. If you are only given one chance to take a test and fail and given no notice(can't confirm it) before you take it then that is not fair and should not be tolerated. You should be able to review the material first. If you are fired for failing it one time then that's wrong. But after 3 attempts and then taking the class again and you fail all three again then you are either a backwater idiot or someone who needs to rethink your chosen career path. I hear the test at McDonalds on how to flip a burger is a bitch.
  17. absolutely, I would never turn it off without direction from medical control but in this guys case the underlying rhythm was near perfect sinus rhythm(sic). There was no evidence of any ectopy on the monitor. I do not know what the reason was for it going off but I'll give the guy a call and check up on him.
  18. Ok, my father in law recently required air ambulance transport to the big city. They did an EKG on scene (done by the medic on scene so I know it was done right). When I met the ER doctor at the Great St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City MO he was doing everything he could to discount everything that my father in law told him. He basically called my Father in law a liar. Then we showed him the 12 lead and he said "paramedics all just have a high school education" and my wife looked at him and said "My husband is a paramedic" and then my father in law said "and he has a master's degree" and that doctor couldn't get out of the room fast enough. My father in law actually said a little while later "Go away, I don't want you taking care of me any more, just get my regular doctor in here" It will be Karma if this doctor ever needs a medic, by golly he will get a high school educated paramedic hopefully. Would serve him right.
  19. I too have had this product and it was so vile that I spit out the first bite. My son saw my reaction and he refused to even try it. So we went back to the old standby Bisquik and made some YUMMY waffles. Bisquik or Krusteaz, for the win, Regis and kelly FAIL
  20. Just worked one Friday night like this. Had 3 vehicles, major damage on 2 of the 3. Had a unconscious gal in the backseat of vehicle 1, unconscious in front seat of veh 1 Had rigid abdomen and recent gastric bypass surgery on driver of car 2 Chest trauma on backseat passenger in car 2 bilat lower extrem injuries in passenger in car 2 All patients met trauma criteria to go to trauma center yet the closest center is 65 miles away. We called 5 helicopters in for all 5 patients and all went well. We ended up with 4 ambulances on scene which depleted our units and a mutual aid unit from 17 miles away. All went well but unfortunately you can't take care of every patient initially. Quick scene size-up call for all thehelp you need, call early. Once I knew patients in 1st vehicle were being seen, and patient 2 and 3 in the vehicle I was at had medics I was able to take care of mine. Being triage officer sucks if you ask me.
  21. yeah but she is beginning to have a track record of backing writers who state that their story is true initially but when people really look into things they come clean and say that they aren't true. Some of the books she touts have been really good but this book as well as the one called "million tiny pieces" or something like that have left her with Egg on her face. Seems like someone with all her resources can vet these people better than they have in the past. I think Oprah is an idiot anyway - just my opinion though.
  22. Is this the story that Oprah has been touting from a new book? I just read somewhere that this story is not completely true. The story I read about the book is that it is being pulled from being published since it is touted as a true story but it's not true. The author even says that it is not completely true but was meant to make people feel good and happy. Either or, I love this story for the hope that it gives to all of us. If you did not read the story above, I urge you to really read it and think about what this story means, to you and to the world. Sorry for being mushy but this is good stuff.
  23. the last three or four rodeos I have worked have been nightmares(no pun intended - get it night mares). 95% of the people who go to rodeos want to have a good time but there are the 5% that go there to get in fights, drink till the well is dry, and then they want to see the riders get hurt. When a rider gets hurt and we wait until the bull is out of the arena circle(scene safety if you know what I mean) the people in the stand yell and say "get yer ass in there" or other inappropriate epithets. I don't see their asses going in the ring with the 2thousand pound bull. When we do get in to the ring the cowboy is mostly always going to refuse. Many of the drunk rodeo attendees have gone so far as to say "if you don't get in there right now we're gonna come down and Kick your asses". We brought this up to the last rodeo official we worked with and he told us to get thicker skin. We told him that we were leaving. He said we couldn't. I said that this is no longer a safe environment for us to be at and until those who threatened us were removed from the environment we were not coming back. He refused to do that. We left. The rodeo was cancelled. Our boss backed us 100% and told the rodeo officials that there would be no ambulance standby's until some changes were made. They now use another ems service to cover their rodeo. I hate hate hate rodeo standby's, it's my least favorite part of this job. To me anyone who sits at a table while a bull is charging them and waiting until the bull hits them then they have a few screws loose. Or the one I really love to see is the cowboys(if you can call them that) trying to pull the ribbon off the bulls horn and then getting gored just floors me. Give me a High angle rescue anytime and I hate heights more than most anything.
  24. they used these two references References Sanders M: Mosby’s Paramedic Textbook, Revised Second Edition, 2001 Mosby Lifeline, Baltimore, 686-708 Brady Emergency Care 9th Edition, 2001 Limmer, O'keefe, et. al, 509-513 Does anyone have these books that can look up this info? I for one do not have these books.
