Timmy, my heart goes out to you, I am impressed you are doing what you are doing. I agree with you, I don't understand why in this country we allow us to euthanize our dogs and cats for terminal illnesses yet we don't allow it for humans. When I go I hope that I go like a good doctor friend of mine did. A group of his colleagues went to his hospital room one night, turned off the safeguard of the morphine drip and slowly increased the dosage until this friend was gone. He died peacefully and did not have to go thru the anguish of dying a slow death in a nursing home.

with all those improvements what have your EMS rates done? Have they gone up? Or have they gone down. Remember, for everything that a union gets you the cost has to be recouped somehow. It's called income redistribution, you get better pay and better equipment and the patients get a higher rate. I'd be curious as to where that money came from to get you all the neat stuff you are so happy you have. DO NOT get me wrong, I'm all for that good stuff but the money has to come from somewhere

army got me into firefighting
Just Plain Ruff replied to fireparamedicf23's topic in Tactical & Military Medicine
so how did it prepare you better than college? You are going to get a lot of differing opinions on that statement you made. -
I work on a major health IT systems computer program and put it in ER's around the country. The discharge instructions are written on a 5th grade education level. There are countless times that patients complain that they didn't understand the instructions. I have also worked in a ER and even reading these instructions to the patients and sometimes making the not so bright ones repeat what I told them, these patients and caretakers still do not remember or understnad what I told them. Remember, you can't fix stupid. But it is incumbent upon the ER staff or physician office staff members to make sure that patients understand their instructions. It sure as hell isn't going to be the patients out there who will take responsibility for their medical care. That's what ER's are for.

How many dogs does it take to change a lightbulb? - Author unknown GOLDEN Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb? BORDER COLLIE: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. DACHSHUND: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp! ROTTWEILER: Make me. LAB.: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? TIBETAN TERRIER:Let the Border Colliedo it. You can feed me while he's busy! JACK RUSSELL TERRIER: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. POODLE: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. GERMAN SHEPHERD: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark , checked to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation. COCKER SPANIEL: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. DOBERMAN: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch. BOXER: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark...... CHIHUAHUA: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. IRISH WOLFHOUND: Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover.... POINTER: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.... GREYHOUND: It isn't moving. Who cares? AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle.. OLD ENGLISH SHEEP DOG: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb? HOUND DOG: ZZZZZZzzzzz. z.z.z..z. .z..z...z And what about CATS? CATS: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the question is: How long will it be before I can expect light? ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF...

You know my opinion of you and if you don't you and I need to talk again. You will do your company proud just like you ahve done your previous company proud. I would work with you any day of the week.

Live saving drugs pulled from fire truck in Naples, Florida
Just Plain Ruff replied to VentMedic's topic in EMS News
we need to look deeper into this. 12 of 14 medics who took this test failed. We need to take a step back and see if we need to go back to protocols that say, "if wheezes are present(those are high pitched sounds on either expiration or inspiration) then open the Red box and push the plunger of the syringe till it reaches the black line on the syringe" Or maybe we need medics who actually know what they are doin. I'm sure these are competent medics but to fail a test you had one month to study for is just laziness. This is a discouraging turn of events. My real question is this, why did they just give the test to these 14 people? Was it given on a station by station basis or what. Sad sad sad -
don't let it happen again boe. The only excuse from here on out that we will accept is that you have to hunker down due to a hurricane.

The other thing is Sean Hannity does a weekly man on the street interview and asked a bunch of people what 9/11 stood for and 1/2 couldn't tell him the right information. The other half could not tell him the year. Dismal dismal attrocious(sic) and disheartening.

12 of 14 medics failed the test after a month of study allowed. That's like a 5% pass rate. DISMAL Too bad these guys are not given a test every two years or so to keep their licenses. And to the guy who was not concerned but didn't take the test, I wonder how well he would do. This just plain scares the hell out of me. -
Happy birthday, the birthday gods could not have allowed another birthday to a better guy.

How will DUI affect my chances of becoming a paramedic (CA)
Just Plain Ruff replied to Converse1762's topic in Archives
ONe thing in an anonymous forum is no body does much follow up. WE have given advice, good or bad is yet to be seen, but...... the original poster has not been back to inform any of us what he has found out for himself. A thoughtful post yes indeed yet, no response from the OP often means that such a thoughtful post only served to get into chat but that doesn't seem the case here as there is a single post from the OP. So I ask the OP, what have you found out. What many of us here have said all along that this will depend on your direct jurisdiction and not ours. It is dependent upon the OP finding out this information. No matter what we tell him on this forum, the OP needs to find out for him/her self. -

We know your position. It's not my position. But when you say you didn't say something and then you are proven wrong and then you get snitty and insulting about getting called on that error you have to expect the response you did. I truly understand your position, I'm just one who doesn't hold your position. I think that we need to give people who have learned their lessons a little bit more credit than you want to give them. You don't have to defend your position to me, you really don't, I respect your opinion yet I do not agree with it. I'd like for you to afford me the same respect to my opinion which you have repeatedly not done. We all have our own opinions and we are all entitled to those opinions. Some of us have strong reactions to certain things and others have strong reactions to the same thing but in a different way. No need to get your panties in a wad, I also never said I wanted the person to work for me or work with me but I did not have the luxury of making any hiring decisions except when at one company. Besides, it's not really our place to say who can work where when the insurance conpanies are really the ones who say that the person (with the dui history) is insurable or not. If they are not insurable then too bad so sad, no job. But if they are insurable then I say give em a chance if there are certain criteria met. Let's stop slinging insults at each other from here on out and leave it at that. Can you do that? I certainly can. -
How hard is to get a job as an EMT-B in Chicago?
Just Plain Ruff replied to twilliams988's topic in General EMS Discussion
a few years back, prior to my medic days, I tried to apply to the chicago fire department and was immediately told you have to live in Chicago to get a job here. You have to be a resident prior to applying. Then the applicant pool was about 1500 for each opening. I can't say that is how it is now but that's what I remember. But my information is like more than 10 years old. I'm certain it has changed but not sure how much it has changed. -

Now you are just being silly or just plain acting stupid. you are the one who opened the can of worms by saying you never said something which you did(and were called on the carpet on). I'd suggest maybe growing up and acting serious every now and then. For someone who claims in their profile they are 98 years old I'd have expected some more maturity out of ya. -

I'm not even going to keep hitting my head against the ceiling on this one. WE all have our own opinions and we are all entitled to those opinions be they right or wrong. That's what makes this country great. Just to be clear, I never advocated that this guy be given a job I just don't think it should be the sole criteria of whether he's hirable or not(maybe mispelled hirable though) ONe more pointless argument, if you go on with the serial killers and mass murderers and wife beater argument then what about medication errors. Should those people be fired and decertified because that ONE Mistake put the public at risk(at least one member of the public). We could go on and on and I'll concede that each of us has a valid point no matter how wrong I feel some of those points are but to each their own. -

Just Plain Ruff replied to Converse1762's topic in Archives
dude, we've all picked up after those drunk drivers you dislike so much. I'm not excusing his actions but are you so judgemental to not give someone a 2nd chance? Your argument about serial killers and rapists is flimsy at best. Try to make a better argument next time. I'm sorry if I upset you but your attitude towards this one guy and his one mistake shows that many people can't get beyond that one mistake. I have no sympathy with anyone who goes out and drives drunk and then thinks that they can come in and start to work as a medic without some safeguards or a background check. I'm sorry if my "cute" comment offended you but most people dont post that type of comment until it's been a while since they ahve been here. Are you the kind of person who won't give anyone a 2nd chance? I hope not. I am the type of person who will give someone a 2nd chance but if that 2nd chance becomes a need for a third chance then they are history. But to blanketly state that you are glad you don't live in that persons area is arrogant and condescending at the least. I'm sure that there are people in your service or other services around you that have people with past convictions or other indiscretions and I'm sure they have proven to be good employees. Cannot guarantee that. For those who have no sin can cast the first stone. -

Agreed Vent, but I have a conviction of altering my driver's license when I was in college. By the persons post above who doesn't want to live in the OP's area, this poster should also not want to live in my area because I might just alter my trip reports. How long do you hold someones stupid mistake over their head and not give them another chance? If they pay their debt to society (I so hate that use of words) then why not give them a chance? I have no problems with notations on their paramedic license or what not but the person I took offense to, made it sound like they would refuse them a license and their statement was something like "good luck finding a job other than ems" or some thing like that. What happens if this person (OP) wants to help people, to fill a need in a community and then they are denied simply because of a stupid mistake they made 4 years ago or even 3 years ago. It would be a different story if it involved conviction number 2 or three but one conviction is not enough in my book to banish them from EMS unless they killed someone in that drunk driving incident or there was a pattern to their behaviour. But the old adage is, once a criminal always a criminal right? -

What a totally arrogant and insulting post to the original poster and it took you only 6 posts to show how insensitive you really are. wow, a stupid mistake 4 years ago and you decide on that alone that you are glad you don't live in his area. That's a little judgemental if you ask me. Yes he made a huge mistake, did he not complete the mandated court requirements? But to throw a blanket statement of glad I'm not living in your area is a big bit of ego if you ask me. So what about the other people in your area that got DUI's? Where are you going to live since I'll bet within 1/2 mile of your house and maybe next door someone has a drunk driving conviction. Good luck finding someplace to live without someone with a drunk driving conviction. I hope that your life has been without challenges or stupid mistakes. That would allow you to throw stones and be squeaky clean. Sure we deal with drunks every day, we deal with the fatalities they cause. We deal with many other things yet someone who has made the mistake and then followed through on the court requirements and then want's to come out and help people and you automatically want to ban him from working in EMS. -
1-2 trips per day driving. could it be stimulants that he's withdrawing from? Trying to use them to keep awake driving. What about overdosing on red bull or one of those monster drinks - if he drinks 20 or so a day then he might have a little bit of an issue getting off them. or I can take the middle road and obvious choice that he has a DVT and it broke loose and went to the brain. Plus he shit his pants so I'm sure he felt like "shit' ha ha ha Or he's just a new onset seizure patient.
