  1. If you are wanting the autonomy of working alone, all by yourself or just with one other person, there are tons of remote gigs that would kill to have a physician who would give up his/her freedom to move to the boonies, live on packaged meals, have limited supplies and possibly be stuck in an area where the safety of themselves would be suspect at best and evac would and could be hours if not days at best. DWAYNE you out there!!!! But if that is what you are looking for, there's jobs out there for you.
  2. Try this, Upper - Mouth/nose Middle - Neck and assorted structures Lower - lungs and assorted structures And go-----
  3. North, I'm still here as well.
  4. Sticky, but here is what I'm going to do and let the powers that be kick my ass I'm going to put the child in a seat belt at the far end of the bench seat, and transport both of them. But the chances of your scenario happening with you being the only one on scene is going to be very rare but it could happen. It's really a non-issue. You do what you have to do, you work with what you have and you either transport the child if there is absolutely NO one to take custody of them or you give them to someone in a position of authority. Simple as that.
  5. So what does your book say?
  6. Sorely lacking in tact, I realize that I neglected to post a RIP or condolences to this post which I meant to. Bad ruff, bad bad It seems that every day or week or so we see another provider succomb to the long term effects of the attack. I weep for their families and friends who suffer yet again at the hands of the terrorists who struck such a devastating blow to our country and may we never forget. Unfortunately many have and it's up to us to keep the memories alive of responders like Trevor and the hundreds of others who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that day and others many years later Like Trevor. I'm humbled at the bravery of my brethren in EMS/Fire and Law Enforcement who take up the call each and every day, I'm proud to work with all of you, even if it's not personally. We must support each other and have each others backs. To each of you working daily, I salute you, to those whose shifts have ended prematurely, Your watch is over, we've got it from here on out. God speed.
  7. What a kettle of fish you bring up many schools of thought but you didn't say how old. But let's go down this rabbit hole with a 10 year old say we 1. 10 year old is old enough to ride in front seat - I would let them if and only if there was no one to come get the child. 2. If there is someone to come get the child the child stays with the police and that said someone comes to get them. For less than 10 - a stickier situation CAR SEATS CAR SEATS CAR SEATS 1. Does your agency have car seats available? 2. How badly injured is dad? Will you need all hands on deck for dad's treatment and will there be room for this kid in the back? 3. If no room for kiddo, then sorry kid stays with police on scene with a car seat until Police can bring child to hospital because more than likely police are coming to hospital anyway. 4. is there someone to come get said child? If so then all points are MOOT!!! 5. If no one to come get child, then all points 1,2, 3 apply If child is an infant - see points 1,2,3, 4 and 5 If your agency has a policy about NO non patient riders in the ambulance (which is a freaking stupid policy IMHO) that's a entirely different thread altogether, then we can go down that rabbit hole and follow it where it leads but I never followed the two services who said no riders, I erred on the side of pt care not policy and never got in trouble for it. Your mileage on this might vary. So when in doubt, this is my opinion, if it is safe for both the patient and the child to take the child along, then do so, but if at any time you believe it isn't safe to bring the kid along, leave the child with the police along with a car seat and have them transport the child to the same hospital you transported the father to. You will find that most police departments will be most accomodating in this regard. You will also find that most children will have at least someone that can come and get them at some point in the process. Any other questions?
  8. Well hell, that sucks. It's my understanding that there is a bill in congress that will extend the benefit period for responders for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Here's the link. https://www.change.org/p/tell-congress-we-will-never-forget-9-11-first-responders-and-survivors I urge everyone here to go there and sign the petition and do whatever you can to get our lawmakers to extend this.
  9. Karly, you should have seen the questions I asked when i first came here many moons ago. A guy named Dust, let me have it many times, and then a guy named AKFlightmedic set me straight and then I met the two of them and I was humbled. There are such things as silly questions but not to the person asking them. But your question was not silly it was a genuine question and it deserved a answer just like every other question that comes here. Please come back again with more questions, we are here to help and be a sounding board for questions both silly and non.
  10. Taylor96, Mike said it, what are you having problems with, this is a huge topic and we just can't give you help on such a broad topic such as the respiratory system. What are your top 5 problem areas in the Airway/resp system that you are having problems with and I'm sure that we can come up with some good areas for you to go to for help. Have you read your text book chapters at least twice? Have you read the handouts from your instructors? Did you do a google search on what you are having trouble with?
  11. Yeah, rumor has it on this page that a certain ERDoc pulls homeless people off the streets to start his IV's and venipunctures.
  12. I'm so glad you came back, shows gumption. and I wasn't berating you, I was just letting you know that some of those people in your class might just surprise you. but yes, practicing on other people is just par for the course, but I am surprised that they are making you bring in someone from your circle of friends to practice on. maybe you could bring one of your frenemies!!!! ha ha But seriously, the more practice you get the better you get. But I do have to tell you, there were some people in my class who I still to this day shake my head and wonder "how the hell did they make it out of medic school when they get lost in a paper bag" keep your chin up, you might just like this stuff enough to go on and be a medic or a doctor or what not.
  13. Why did they put chest tubes in? From what you wrote sounds like she got worse after the chest tubes and the ET tube. What happened after they tubes were placed?
  14. Something to read and think about - Posted on another site as well http://www.ems1.com/research-reviews/articles/3220704-Study-Diagnosis-wrong-too-often-urgent-improvement-needed/?utm_source=3220814&utm_medium=email&utm_content=TopNewsRight3Title&utm_campaign=EMS1Member&nlid=3220814
  15. Why do you feel the need to mention you were on scene? Does it add credence to your project? Does NOT mentioning it take anything away from your project? If the answer to number the first question is NO and the answer to the 2nd question is NO then I think you have your answer.
  16. Hello Karly, this is very related to EMS because we use needles all the time to do venipunctures and start IV's on people. We also learned on each other in class so we all had to start somewhere. And yes, there were people in my class that I wouldn't have wanted anywhere near me with kindergarden scissors but you have to get over that hurdle because you might be surprised, one of those people you have a fear about might just be a great stick, you never know, and don't be surprised, or shocked but i'm thinking that there are some in your class that might not want to hand you a pair of scissors either. gasp, so don't be so judgemental. But, that being said, you will know when you are in the vein, you will feel a pop or feel resistence and then the resistence will go away. Hopefully the school you are in will have an iv arm for you to practice on first so you get somewhat of a feel of what a vein feels like when you put a needle through it. If they don't have one then sad to say your school kind of sucks. but that being said, and if your school can't afford an IV arm and relies on your classmates as IV arms then get ready to look like a junkie because you are going to be stuck and stuck and stuck and yes you will bruise because most if not all of your classmates will blow your veins as will you blow most of your classmates veins until you get proficient enough not to. So put away your judgmental attitude of your other classmates, keep your scissors in your pocket, and just roll with the IV needles and keep some icepacks handy. Within a couple of classes you and your classmates will be hitting each others veins like pros. It really does get easier the more you do it. One thing I will tell you NOT NOT NOT to do, do NOT take any needles home with you to practice on your boyfriend, family or friends, that's a big no no. We had a couple of medic student classmates do that and when they got caught, they were kicked out of class. That's bad form and bad mojo. Good luck on your class. You can do this.
  17. I worked at a small service, hospital based, On very slow nights the physician on duty(medical director he was) would often ride out on calls with us. Granted only the good calls that he thought would be exciting. He got a couple of really good fun calls but often times he was more in the way then not. He finally just decided to stay in the ED and wait for us to bring the patient to him. It wasn't a trust issue, but more of a boredom issue. By the time we got the patient to the ED, 80% of the treatment had been done. Most everything he had to do was a physician evaluation, labs, xrays and either admit orders or transfer/discharge em. Many times he would just direct admit em if he was their primary care doctor as well.
  18. I can tell you that many of the young people I have talked to don't really even have an idea of what 9/11 was all about. they just think it was a terrorist attack. Not much more. Unfortunately just watch any of the man on the street bits that have been done on late night tv, it's disheartening.
  19. What floats your boat? Do you have a passion in EMS yet? Surely there is something that really hits your interest. Write about that.
  20. llooks like I know who is gonna get the card!!!!!
  21. but the more likely possibility is that you need some vaccinations or don't have records to prove vaccination status and they are requiring you get them before you work.
  22. I would think that your vaxing question has to do with all your childhood immunizations, your hep-b and influenza vax status. Don't listen to Jenny mcCarthy, the vaccinations will NOT give you Autism. Are your childhood shots up to date? Did they say anything about running titers for your existing childhood immunization status? And have you had the Hep-b vaccinations and flu shot yet? Did you quit the FDNY academy prior to your getting vaccincated and tested by them? I would suspect that is what they are denying clearance for you. then again, it might be that you just pissed someone off at the FDNY for quitting and they are making it tough on you.
  23. take em to the hospital and let them deal with the spasms, not much we can do for them other than transport. There are so many variables that it would be impossible for us to help you get your homework right, if that's what you are asking. But since you haven't been back to respond to the above questions, makes me think it was a h9omework project.
  24. Game of War is also another addictive game but it's a money grabbing piece of crap, good game, just to get anywhere you have to sink money into it and after level 7 the game takes so long to do one building or one task that it nearly forces you to pay cash to buy speedups. There is a reason why the developers of that game paid Kate Upton 40+ million dollars to be their face of the game. She's super hot but not worth even 1 million.
  25. I play WOW, I also play others as well, but there is so much to do in WOW for a new player that I concentrate on one game at a time. And for now,wow is it.
