  1. it's because EMS has historically given their services away for free so why not this time as well. Fire as well. What will happen is EMS will look like the bad guys if they dont' work for free because it will be spun that they didn't "help the brother love city out" I say screw em, if they can find the budget to pay everyone else out, then they can find the budget to pay ems. Plus, isn't the catholic church full of money, can't they foot the bill or at least help pay for some of it?
  2. for the question regarding worst call - I usually tell them - think of their child in the worst thing that could ever happen to them and then triple it. I usually tell them to leave it there and not ask me to elaborate.
  3. Yeah, clearly the ambulance is at fault. They just go right on through that red light. Me wonders whether they were trying to beat the fire truck. My initial thoughts when I saw this video a couple of days ago was "What is that driver thinking?????, slow the hell down and stop at that red light" I would bet that the driver has had at least one other close call in the past month, anyone want to take me up on this bet?????
  4. have you contacted the state of New York? These questions are best answered by the experts at the State/local level, not us on this forum.
  5. Holy thread resurrection batman, My favorite song is well I have several. I have to figure out which is my favorite and I'll be back
  6. Ok, this was not the news I was wanting to hear this morning as I counted Ed as a close personal friend. We had corresponded several times and he had helped me several times as well. my heart is heavy and in a sad place. Ed, you will be missed terribly by all who knew you, your last watch is done, your team has it from here. RIP my friend.
  7. Hey trackmedic, wasn't specifically calling you out, but some people come here and say "this site sucks or to that effect" and they don't offer suggestions but just bitch. and then go away. I would love to see when they bitch and moan, provide suggestions as to why this site sucks. if you are going to complain as to why the site sucks, tell admin or tell us in a post why it sucks!!! that way someone can do something about it. Don't just say it sucks and then go away. Stick around and make it unsucky.
  8. nah, just a thought. no biggie. just a thought.
  9. I didn't quote you, I referenced you when giving a simple anecdote.
  10. A CEU Class is a education course that has education hours attached to it. No offense to you but if you don't know what they are then it probably won't work but maybe if you were to provide the actual course in burns, (basic or advanced level or a mix that would benefit both level of provider) then someone here in the states could sponsor the class and provide the hours via their training site. Anyone want to step up if Downunder were to write the education piece? Sort of a collaborative effort?
  11. Unfortunately, many new members would get upset or their feelings hurt and they would never return. I think over the past year, when our posting count was in the toilet, we ran off more people than we attracted. I'd like to see that reverse itself. Now with another similar site that I belong to geting ready to shutter it's doors, this site will need to attract more members again. Let's not let it get like it was last year.
  12. Where don't we agree? Take the sarcasm out and maybe we do agree, or maybe we don't. I'm good with either.
  13. ooooh, I see an education topic here Downunder. do you have the ability to put together a ceu class and offer it to us goombahs' here? I remember Admin mentioning that this might be something he wanted to pursue, a education dynamic on this site, or it might have been someone else here making that request. What are your thoughts?
  14. Excellent post Mr Mike, I would only add to this, a DUI that is 9 years old is much better than one within the past year or so, especially with a proven pattern of no other offenses occurring. Don't forget that some services are self insured and those may be more forgiving in who they hire driving but they may also have a drop dead no hire rule for DUI/DWI. I for one do not have much sympathy for anyone who has a history of a dui/dwi but I do know that people change and I give people the benefit of the doubt in that arena.
  15. Thanks Downunder, I speak from this from being out of EMS full time for at least 4 years, I've not really been an active EMS provider except in small circumstances for that period of time and I've actually been retired for the last 3. I really haven't kept up with burn care for the last 4 years. Old habits/treatment regimens die hard so to speak. It's good to review the current literature and best practices and this is what makes forums like this so freaking important.
  16. I echo doc's sentiments, what can be done to improve? I mean you criticize the site but why not help improve it and add some gems of discussions? Not sniping you at all but if you are going to criticize the site and say it's low bow or irrelevant and you don't return then you are (and many here) are part of the problem and maybe you should (if you like the site) help make the site better. Post a scenario, post a discussion, post something that would help someone relate to this site and help them become a better medic or emt!!! This site is ours to make better, or ours to make into a turd, and you know what they say about turds, you can shine a turd all you want, but in the end it's still a .............................................................................................................TURD!
  17. Absolutely, I would hope that after the sort of drop off of posting to this site over the past year some of those who tended to attack posters for questions asked reviewed their posting style and I would hope that they (I may have been guilty at times) took a look at the way they responded and will post differently. i'm hoping that Admin/mods and to some extent the community will self police and nip it in the bud. time will tell.
  18. Did you know that Vanilla pudding is racist now, it's been just plain ole vanilla pudding, but someone saw someone eating vanilla pudding while uttering the N word and now vanilla pudding is affiliated with racism. See how stupid that sounds, well that's how stupid we americans are with all this "I'm more offended than you are at being offended for being offended" America, what can we be offended by today
  19. Every place I've ever worked for has advocated the application of a clean dry dressing. Many places have said it is due to hypothermia which is a burn patient's big danger apart from infection. I've always just put a dry sterile (if you can call it that) sheet over the burned area and transported. I also am skeptical to think that other than covering a burn that my 30 minute or 60 minutes with them, that hydrogel over dry sterile dressings is going to show one being better than the other especially when the burn center/trauma center is probably going to remove the dressing I have put on them to put their own on. Every burn patient I've taken into a hospital has had their dressing removed to have the one that the hospital wants to use. So prove to me that Hydrogel in the field is better than a dry sterile dressing!!
  20. I have a bagphone in my parents basement. It just sits' there waiting for the apocolypse. I also have a rotary phone hooked up to my cable phone line.
  21. Ok, your original post on another thread is vague. but if you have not been studying during your class, then you will be hard pressed to study for a week and pass the nremt test but stranger things have happened. but if you took the class a while ago and are starting to study again, i would give yourself a little more time to study. A week for a test seems a little short. But who knows how you think or learn. but if you decide to take the test on a weeks study time, the only one who you can blame when you fail it is you though.
  22. Please clarify the question?
  23. My goodness, I got called old, my children call me the old man in the woods, I just need a clown suit and a cabin and I'll be set for life. hell I turn 50 in 2 years.
  24. MCSOU, I just taught my 12 year old son how to give me my glucagon for when and if I ever drop to a critical blood sugar level. I taught him that he is only to give me this, AFTER he calls 911 and if 911 tells him that the response will be delayed. He is to tell 911 that he has a glucagon injection and he is getting ready to give it per my doctors instructions. The 911 operators on the phone are all paramedics (so I've heard) so they will be able to tell him if an when glucagon is appropriate for me. Now if we are travelling to my in-laws, which are 15 minutes (at least) away from the nearest ALS unit, he will give the glucagon, but only after calling 911. (I only know this because I used to work for this service) Should we not allow him to give this life assisting medication because he is not a medically trained person? I think not. But I do agree with Triemal, Each service needs to evaluate their readiness of their emt's as to whether they should be able to give this medication, The proof will be in the pudding and if their skills with the BVM are sorely lacking, OR if they are going to be with the patient for a very long time before ALS arrives OR if they are only a BLS service, then maybe they should think about allowing to give this medication, but ONLY If they have ALS intercept agreements in place. The worst thng to happen is that they give enough to get the person breathing or breathing well enough on their own, only to have the narcan wear off and they are back to square 1 which is not where they want to be.
  25. Like mike said, start getting in shape now if you haven't, plus don't you need to be in the military to do either of those?
