  1. just a question here for all the providers out there, When was the last time any of us had a patient who was a copd'r and we knocked out their respiratory drive. I'd be interested to hear the stats on this.
  2. first suggestion - turn off your all caps. as for taking the test, get a study guide and take the tests. Have your gal pal or guy pal whichever you prefer make the environment as close to a test environment as possible. Then take the test and see what happens. some people just don't do well taking the tests. If you have some sort of learning disability then your school should make some sort of arrangements to help you in your test taking but if you have no disability then you need to take the test like everyone else.
  3. well I did thaht one night but this was on a call Dwayne the call was a baby non-breather and when we get in the house the call was really a child coughing
  4. I tripped in someone's yard one night. Should I have the right to sue them?
  5. wrong dust, if you do a search on google of dustdevil, ems you get this page http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dustdevil%2C+ems
  6. I stopped working in the field nearly completely when I started my travelling consultancy. It was a huge adjustment. I still felt drawn to the EMS life but I realized that I would not be a person without back problems if I didn't get out and do something less stressful on my back. I found a nice travelling job, going from er to ER in many states computerizing them and still able to converse with medics and emt's, nurses, docs and techs and the like. I was also able to do some ride alongs which I've not done for about 3 years. When I switched from my first consultant job to the next step I enjoyed a huge pay increase and realized that I could not go back to EMS if I wanted to. Consequently, I found EMT City and feel that I have been an important part of this community since I joined. It's not about the post counts it's about the friendship and the proof is the party that we had in Orlando and how we so easily fit in together that made it so worthwhile. As of July 2009 my paramedic license will lapse, which I reluctantly will let it lapse because of all the work that will be required to get it fully up to speed again. Plus the cost of doing so which I won't see any type of ROI for that expense. Anywho, I plan on being here till my fingers drop off and will hopefully be a valued member for a long time to come. The advice for those of you who decide to go to a different field or an alternate field, get your degree because it's very hard to do so after you've been out of school for 15 years and to go back and get a masters since I already have a bachelors degree was daunting but I was able to do it but in return the student loan debt I have is huge, about 32k and it never seems to get smaller Get your degree while you are still in college or when you start your emt or medic school and you will thank everyone on this forum who told you to do this. It's just impossible to really go back to school after you have a family and kids and a full time job. Stay in school and don't do drugs.
  7. AK if you do a search in google for AKFLIGHTMEDIC you are the first entry on page one. And if you do a search on RUFFEMS or ruffems you get my website as the first item on page one. woot
  8. I made page 6 and page 11 and page 12 and page 17
  9. Life after EMS you are supposed to fade away, not Me I came to EMT City and I have nearly 4000 posts. Proves you are not out of it just on a different plane.
  10. well dust the assumption I'm going to take is this The patient in the end was moved to the idiots ambulance because the paramedic taking care of the patient was arrested and he needed a medic so the idiot medic probably got his wish anyway. If I was the good medic, not the idiot medic I would be looking into my legal options to see whether this deputy acted correctly in this situation. I'd be talking to the DA's office and if that led me no-where then I'd be calling some big shot lawyer.
  11. wait a second, a remote village in africa and they have cell phone coverage? Can't imagine there being a need for it. Now couple this device with Satellite tech and we've got a super tricorder.
  12. Johnson County Kansas. at least 6 level II or I trauma centers many other good smaller hospitals no requirement to live in Johnson County Career track is excellent Lots of resources available to the EMS agencies. This is a county that has more money than most others and really puts it to good use. Training is TOP Notch, Bill Toon is a excellent educator as well as the other educators. Outrageous amount of equipment issued to you, full bunker gear. You are not housed on the street corners you get to actually hit the bed at night unless you get calls. www.jocoems.org
  13. and don't forget if you get the easy cap the one with the paper in it becomes worthless when it gets wet.
  14. well we know how it turned out for the deputy, she got promoted. Sounds like it worked out pretty well for her.
  15. ok first ambulance on scene has patient care(ALS level ambulance) 2nd paramedic gets on scene and tries to take the patient out of the original ambluance helicopter enroute now the 2nd paramedics wife who happens to be a deputy gets on the scene and takes side of husband and stops the ambulance from leaving to meet helicopter when the ambulance starts to leave she gets in the ambulance and arrests the 1st medic deputy is now promoted (WOW) County drops citation 2nd paramedics medical director says what 2nd paramedic did was plain wrong no word on discipline of 2nd medic hope this gets to the state to determine what level of discipline to that medics license hope the patient sues not only the 2nd paramedic, but the hospital and that deputy sounds screwed up if you ask me.
  16. I'd first give him the number to a good product liability attorney based on airbags not deploying. But seriously, did you check to make sure that you and he were out of lanes of traffic? Common mistake among emergency services people who stop and render aid on the side of the road. They don't look to see what else was gonna hit them. And BAM your'e dead You have no equipment, you have no medications you have nothing but the hands on your arms and your voice so you can use your hands to hold c-spine or his hand because that's all you can do. You can use your voice to calm the guy but apart from anything else you have nothing to offer this injured person. Seriously, what can the average good samaritan do for an injured person with no equipment? Do we really think we are being helpful on scene when all we can do is wait for the equipment we don't have to show up?
  17. exsanguinating
  18. realization
  19. Hey, All you Whackers out there. This is the best siren and light system money can buy. Tell all your whacker friends to buy one for each vehicle.
  20. no I was just scratching my head too. I thought that paramedics were taught to fix the immediate lifethreats as well as do ALS skills. I actually thought that they were one in the same. That statement by the poster we are referring to is about as bad and absurd as paramedics save live and emt's save medics.
  21. I didn't know there was a difference.
  22. 3)The paramedic is left with the ALS parts of treatment while the basic handles the immediate life threats. Huh??????
  23. maybe she hasn't seen it in years and it looked smaller back when she actually saw it last.
  24. Vent you are so correct, I spent the last year and a half in jacksonville and I remember those commercials. How if this property tax bill or whatever the bill was passed that they would have to shut down fire stations and put their poor firefighters out of work. The sheriff's department was no better in Jax. The initiative passed and I have yet to see any mention of any fire station or ambulance being sidelined. As a matter of fact I talked to a Captain for JAX Fire and rescue and he said that they were not only expanding their department but they are adding about 8-10 new ambulances (proposed) to cover the burden. I asked him about the commercials that were run and he said that he never supported those because he knew they were bullshit
  25. this is exactly what happens when the government gets involved with anything. Throw money at the issue and you get all this help on scene. Take some of the money away and you get a single ambulance which would suffice for 90% of all calls that we run on a daily basis. If the taxpayers knew this was happening and how much it was costing what do we think they would say??? "Wow, we get all this response, we must be getting our money's worth"? I'm all for providing competent and quality EMS services but with a group of 6-10 people on scene this seems to be a waste of resources. I truly believe it comes down to the bottom line of cash or taxes. If you have a taxpayer supported service then they are going to shoot for the moon in what they can charge and provide rather than do some real evaluation of things and actually be realistic.
