FDNY EMTs do not let Private Medics help with choking child
Just Plain Ruff replied to akflightmedic's topic in EMS News
Bangin on the back of the "bus" is considered an "ambuslap" which signifies the hampster on the treadmill to start running and the driver to take his foot off the brake and apply the gas which in turns begins to shock said hampster into running faster until the ambulance drives into the ER driveway wherefore the brake is applied and the hampster is given his 15 minute union break. -
Acupressure in EMS... does it have a place?
Just Plain Ruff replied to John's topic in General EMS Discussion
I have undergone accupressure for headaches but putting this addtional education on a already burdened educational system for EMS is not a good idea. When our current ems educational system gets fully functional and consistent throughout the united states and our paramedics and emt's have a full grasp of the education that is considered basic then we can add this type of education to the medic/emt courses but not until then. Let's get the basics down and wait on adding these alternative treatments. -

Prescription Drugs Allegedly Stolen from Florida Fire and EM
Just Plain Ruff replied to VentMedic's topic in EMS News
we'll fight to the death to keep the lowest of the lowest common denominator employed. Your a union firefighter and you get caught with kiddie porn? We'll fight to keep your job. you get caught taking drugs - we'll let youkeep your drugs and your jobs. You get caught stealing from a patient - we'll help you keep your job. you deck the fire chief - you can keep your job All in the name of Unity and Union -
Prescription Drugs Allegedly Stolen from Florida Fire and EM
Just Plain Ruff replied to VentMedic's topic in EMS News
I know the Sheriff's Office is doing an investigation and we will be cooperative with them," Hawkins said. "The chief is reviewing all the different situations. We want to get to the bottom of this, just like everybody else." Maybe the chief should investigate why two of his firefighters are using high dose painkillers while working? Sounds like this should be looked at too? That's at least 1/2 of one trucks crew that is doped up while working. -
we had a lady who constantly called 911. We sometimes got the address from Dispatch as Gracies House. Almost all of our crews became complacent with her, didn't bring equipment in, made her walk to the cot and sometimes walk to the ambulance. Funny thing is that she lived less than 500 feet from her favorite ER. I heard from my wifes cousin who works in the system where Gracie lived that Gracie called 911 and said she had chest pain again. The crew walked in with no equipment and just the cot and Holy crapola batman, she's a code!!!! Just goes to show that the majority of a patients BS calls that one can actually be a bona fide emergency. Gracie was dead. sniff sniff.

When the er falls apart on a code
Just Plain Ruff replied to boeingb13's topic in General EMS Discussion
/Sarcasm What is the big deal with transporting code patients??? I mean it's one of the only times when my driver gets to drive really fast without me yelling at him in the front seat. He gets to go fast, rev the engine and then run stop lights. On the other hand, I get to do CPR, ventilate, give drugs and do all sorts of other things all by myself since in the area I used to work in we had minimal help on any patient especially 30 miles out in nowhere land. So jeesh, stop complaining that we transport our codes. It the only time I get my workout.""/sarcasm off I agree, we should not really contemplate transporting someone with CPR in progress unless they code in the back of the ambulance while you are on the way to the ER. -
Re taking the basic course??
Just Plain Ruff replied to jessicaCNAEMT's topic in General EMS Discussion
I sure you you meant losing prosthetic eyes or prosthetic legs. A fair question would be what the heck does losing a prosthetic leg have to do with anatomy and physiology. If they are losing real legs and real eyes then you have more issues than simply needing to retake your emt class. -
TO AMR EMPLOYEES "PAY FOR PERFORMANCE PLAN"
Just Plain Ruff replied to checkersfire's topic in General EMS Discussion
yes but unfortunately this is a way for AMR to screw you out of pay because you don't do something perfect. Just another reason for anyone to stay far far far away from the mothership. -
i have purchased more pda's than I can count and I have never used it for ems work. It's a great tool for phone numbers and calendar but why would I use a 300-500 dollar piece of electronics that I purchase on my own while working? The possibility of it getting fluids, shmegma, spit and other stuff on it, or the possibility of my having it in my pocket when I have to go in scene and it getting broke is just never been something I want to do. I did have my cell phone on my belt when I went in 4 feet of water to hold a girl up so she wouldn't drown so the fire department could extricate her from her upside down car. I got a laceration to my knee from a submerged metal object and also a ruined cell phone which was not reimbursed by my job. So why take the risk.

so would it be appropriate to file a lawsuit against the civilian for her filing a unfounded complaint against him? I"ve heard it done before. I'm all for digital recordings or videos. Who knows who's ass you will save?

nail file and nail clippers. Works every time. I was on a call one morning where the other crew had a patient (very very critical) who had some tendon, muscle and femoral artery left but not much else at the level of injury. They had profuse bleeding that was uncontrolled. Patient was unconscious. he was trapped by the dashboard and engine -head on crash at about 60 miles per hour. They were just about to do a field amputation with the consent of our medical control until the patients leg just popped out from under the dashboard and voila. Unfortunately the patient ended up coding in the ER and didn't make it.

Posted to the Respiratory section Again, we are giving EMT’s the ability in certain jurisdictions to give medications such as breathing treatments and helping a patient self administer their personal medications. If we are giving EMT’s the ability to help patients self administer their personal medications like Nitro, breathing treatments, instaglucose If emt’s have only a fundamental knowledge of any area in the field then they should not be giving medications or assisting with medications at all. Would you want your healthcare practitioner to give you medications based on a fundamental or foundational knowledge of that portion of the curriculum? I think not.

Here is what I just posted to the endocrine area since this is a area that directly affects me, I'm a type II diabetic, so it's only a matter of time since I will need the ambulance and if I just get emt's and they want to treat me I want them to know more than just the fact that "Doh, his blood sugar is low, give him some instaglucose" Here is what i posted EMT’s should know more than a fundamental level of knowledge on diabetic disorders. When you have EMT’s giving Instaglucose and god forbid Glucagon they in essence become paramedics and should have a broad and complex knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of what diabetes is. They need to know what happens to the brain and the body during the administration of any agent that is given during a diabetic crisis and the only way to do that is to increase their knowledge base of diabetes. Any time we have emt’s giving medications they must (MUST) have a greater breadth of knowledge than they currently do. It’s like we give these emt’s tools to use yet the curriculum does not keep up

Why is our field the only field that I know of that caters to the lowest common denominator. The most glaring example of this dumbing down is the thread that was posted regarding the curriculum. ACLS has been dumbed down PALS has been dumbed down PHTLS has been dumbed down EMT school has been dumbed down And a number of other things have been dumbed down. Why do we tolerate this in our field? Do we just have more stupid people in our field that we need to dumb it down? I also remember something on these forums about somwhere in Chicago they dumbed down another course. Why do we tolerate this, PHysicians and RN's do not tolerate their curriculum being dumbed down? Is there a difference between the medics and emt's of 10 - 15 years ago versus the medics and emt's of today?

Does this qualify as the ends justfying the means

Dust I worked with one of those medics who did a field C-section. I met the child in question that he c-sectioned out. Too bad the childs mother died in the crash.

I didn't see how to get the patient loaded. The sliding door just makes me think of a minivan or soemthing like that. With just three pictures at least 5 of the people on this forum have pointed out it's flaws.

why in the world have we resurrected a 2 year old thread. The date of one reply is March 2006 and the next reply is march 2008 Plus the original poster did not reply but once so I think we did all the work for him.

I'm sorry but if someone stole one of my personal items I'd be on the phone not only with my preceptor but also the administration of the hospital giving them 1 day to get the stuff back or I would tell them I'd be on the phone with the following people in this order. 1. The Police department to make a theft report 2. The department of health or whatever department licenses the nurses in your state This is bullshit and you need not stand for it. She would be on the phone immediately with the police if you stole something from her. So start taking the bull by the horns and make your complaints.

Repost of a previous question, fire and ems together

Dude, didn't you get the message the last time this was locked. Same question same locking. Did you post this to see what kind of reaction you would get just like last time?
