Did a FDNY EMT Assault a Patient? The NY Post is there!
Just Plain Ruff replied to JPINFV's topic in EMS News
Abraham is wrong, I've checked many sources and sites on the web and the only thing I can come up with is he had no first name. All that is known is that his business card in one episode was R. Quincy so where in the heck did you get the name Abraham?? Even snopes.com has no information of a first name for Quincy except R. so I'm gonna have to call you out and say you are wrong unless you can point me to a place that actually says it's abraham! Ok for other trivia of people with no first names - What was agent 99's name in the series Get Smart? -

Need some help or someone to talk to
Just Plain Ruff replied to Neesie's topic in Burnout, Stress, & Health
Quote from Neesie feel that if I just leave it alone, it will go away. I don't want to talk to anyone about it. I do have a hard time sleeping because I keep running the call through my head and I keep seeing that little girls face. I keep thinking about her family and how I would feel if I had lost my son. This completely makes me think shes not ok. -
I saw a car with a bumper sticker that said zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds, 60 to morgue in less than 1 second. Organ donation helps many or something like that.

Medic Attempts Suicide...Lose job or no?
Just Plain Ruff replied to emt322632's topic in General EMS Discussion
oh come on AK, aren't we all guaranteed that? I thought we were. You mean being a paramedic was not a predestined career path for me? I truly understand the pre-employment psych, medical and physical screening. What about a pre-employment whacker test? -
Medic Attempts Suicide...Lose job or no?
Just Plain Ruff replied to emt322632's topic in General EMS Discussion
fair enough AK fair enough. I don't think that the person should be fired but that seems to be what everyone is saying that should happen. Read that I said it seems that is what everyone is saying. Deskjobs are good, someone has to do them. If she/he can function in the desk job role then by all means, let her keep her certification and let her work the desk. the worst thing that could happen to her, and it could push her over the edge to her own final solution is to take away her livelihood and fire her. What a way to support her. I had a paramedic partner who had a mental breakdown. Attempted suicide by taking a bunch of pills, Was not successful. He was terminated from his job and about 2 months later he successfully completed his final mission. He was dead when they found him. In his note he said that one of the final straws was the loss of his job. He had been unemployable due to living in a small town(most employers would not hire him because they knew his history). So put the person behind a desk. Let them keep their job but for goodness sake don't fire em. And I know of several medics who have seizures and the rules of the road for their employer was if they were on medications they had to be seizure free for 2 years. What about that person who is on medication, is seizure free for 2 or more years and they go off their meds? If they are driving then couldn't they be considered a danger to the public since their seizures could return. No-one knows when someone with a mental illness will snap and do something drastic. And then again, no-one knows when someone who is seizure free for 5 years with medication will have that all to infrequent breakthru seizure. Plus I liked your little education lecture you posted for my benefit. I have to admit I'm not as up on psych issues as I used to be. -

Running Red Lights/ Stop Signs

Brent, he doesn't just miss the traffic, he flies over the traffic after applying the turbo boost function. It's amazing in the show how many front ends were visibly damaged in the jump but amazingly the car was intact in the next shot. I think we need hover crafts that fly 30 feet over the flow of traffic. Or transporters to get to the scene and then to transport directly to sickbay. -

ok, look at it this way If you are diabetic and you choose to stop taking your diabetic medications then you should be fired because you are a danger to yourself and others just in case your sugar goes down while you are working If you are on seizure medications and you stop taking them then you should be fired because you might have a seizure and cause an ambulance wreck. What about other conditions that require medications and people become non-compliant with them. Should they all be fired? -
If anyone has Pubmed access here is a article that addresses this very thing. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1738437...tractPlusDrugs1 If you have a paid subscription you can get this article. Any of the docs out there have one? how bout you AK or asys?

Running Red Lights/ Stop Signs
Just Plain Ruff replied to firedoc5's topic in General EMS Discussion
From someone who has been involved in several mva's in the ambulance, some while driving and some while attending, and most if not all but one were at an intersection, I have never been called in front of a jury to explain my actions. That is an overused cliche' in the business. The cops know when they respond to the accident who was at fault and who wasn't. If you are driving with due regard(another word I hate) and you slow down, enter the intersection at a crawl and some yahoo hits you and is the only one at the intersection who hit you then you will be a rarity to have to go in front of a jury. Now if you go in an intersection, don't slow down and more than one or two cars hit you or you hit a car that had the right of way with the green light then yes you may be in trouble. Bottom line is, drivers of ambulances are not taught nearly enough about driving. If you enter the intersection, stop and look all directions and make eye contact with every driver then you can be reasonably assured that you will make it thru without a hitch. blow the red light and if you hit someone and you worked for me and the police ticketed you and said you blew the light, then pack your stuff and go home, "you are the weakest link" -
Are volunteer BLS services beneficial?
Just Plain Ruff replied to medic1963's topic in General EMS Discussion
I said I'd stop responding on these types of threads but this one doesn't count because I was already in the mix. Future threads such as these I will not respond to. Ok let me put it a different way. these threads are counter productive. We have a finite number of people on this board who post. Of that finite number we have a wide range of opinions of which everyone thinks they are right. When you have no more than about 25 people arguing, many arguing the same thing over and over how can this be productive. I for one am tired of the same ole same ole in terms of volunteer versus paid. EMT versus Medic Rural versus Urban Heck even the Admin had to come in and delete a bunch of posts (so it said in the first couple of replies) because once again, it did not stay on topic and seems like it dropped down to the lowest common denominator(I seem to be saying this saying a lot these days) and became a personal or negative responses. This is the type of debate that you just don't get anywhere with. Each person's Epeen is bigger than the other and there is no way that the other person may be right, it's just my opinion and that's the Gospel. Until these threads become more productive then I'll start to post again but not till then. -
Are volunteer BLS services beneficial?
Just Plain Ruff replied to medic1963's topic in General EMS Discussion
I think we all agree that this is a divisive topic. The title of the topic was divisive if you ask me. We have people who love that they are emt (booyah on you) We have people who love that they are medics (booyah on you too) We have people who hate emt's and those that hate medics We have people who hate both emts and medics the same. We need to stop posting this type of thread or topic because in my deep seated psyche(scary huh?) I think that these topics are inherently designed to be divisive. The original poster might not have started out to divide but by the nature of the topic it is divisive nonetheless. All a poster has to do is to read the first 20 or so threads and they will see the underlying belief structure here in the posts. I for one am getting tired of seeing the same threads(worded differently though) and the same exact group of people here posting replies. I for one vow from here on out that I refuse to respond to threads where the topic specifically is about EMT's versus medics or paid versus volunteer. If we stop responding these types of threads will go away. -

Yes it is airline by airline but can you imagine the news story that would come out paramedic on board airplane but was not allowed to use the medical kit. Child dies. -
my discussion with a flight attendant
Just Plain Ruff replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
You were on a Southwest airlines flight weren't you? -
there are four words that strike terror in the HR department. Hostile Workplace (and) Sexual Harassment Be prepared to give concrete examples. the reason why those words are so feared or worrisome is that they are usually followed by subpoena's to be witnesses or a serving of lawsuit pie.

I spent about 10 minutes discussing medical care in the air with the lead flight attendant on my airtran flight thursday night. You do not need to show your license or credentials. If you say you are who you are they will not bar you from performing medical care on someone who needs it. They will also give you full access to the ALS kit and AED if you say you are a medic or higher. Access to the basic kit and aed if you are an emt It is a joint decision between you, the pilot, the flight attendant and the airlines medical group if you divert to the closest airport. Better be sure the patient warrants it. After it's all over they will ask you for ID but if you don't have it they document that info on their report. They do investigate with your state bureau of EMS (they call them) after you provide assistance and there are repercussions if you lied about level of care you were licensed or certified to provide. The responding EMS agencies will more than likely also want the information about you for their medical record. So the flight attendants will not bar you from helping if you offer.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO TO UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no no no no no It will be too expensive and will be run like anything else the government does --- poorly. Look at Massachusetts - their universal healthcare has cost way more than the original cost estimate. Plus now they are fining the people in the state who did not sign up. Just take a look at massachusetts and you will see what the fed's will do when they get universal healthcare going - but multiply it by 500% in terms of cost. I am adamantly against universal healthcare and I will be voting in the election for whatever candidate is also against it. You think your ambulance and ER abuse cases are bad now, just wait

Should EMTs Have to Babysit Their Medics?
Just Plain Ruff replied to suzeg487's topic in General EMS Discussion
wow this is like a real wimbeldon tennis match, it just goes back and forth and back and forth. I for one have a neck ache -
I've seena a consistent theme in all these how many questions I took but I passed threads. If you answer less than 90 or so questions my more than likely passed. If you get stopped after 90-100 questoins you probably failed. Over 100 questions and 95% chance you failed. All 120 questions - I'll bet my next paycheck you failed.

Woman dies onboard airplane with faulty equipment
Just Plain Ruff replied to JPINFV's topic in EMS News
Yeah that's true dust. If you show that you know what the heck you are doing then the chances of them asking for licensure or proof is pretty remote. I'm at the airport now, I'm going to snag a hot looking flight attendant and ask her the questions. -
Robert Gift -- do us a favor, go talk to your legal department or the bureau of EMS for whatever state you work in and ask if it's acceptable with perfect driving conditions and the threat of a tire blowout is non-existent if it is acceptable to them for you or any other emergency vehicle operator to drive at 100 miles per hour. If you worked for me and I found out you took my ambulance for a drive at 100mph then you would be out on your butt so fast you couldn't catch your breath. Hit one large pothole at 100 and you are toast. If you really do drive that fast then you my friend are not a whacker, you are a detriment to both the community, yourself and your partner. Leave the driving to the professionals instead of the Ricky "nascar wannabes" But what's really sad is that you think there is nothing wrong with driving this fast. If I hadn't seen your post count I would have thought you posted this drivel just to get into chat.
