EMT "Boot Camps" Your Thoughts Please
Just Plain Ruff replied to brianjemtbff's topic in Education and Training
So with 13 hours a day, when do you have time to study and sleep? Sounds like a lot of sacrifice. Now if you are strictly using the EMT boot camp(think Gulag) in order to get into the next paramedic class, then all righty then, but if you are taking the boot camp because you want to get it over and become an emt asap then you are feeding the coffers of these people. I'm not saying that you won't make a good emt but I'm saying that you will not get the education experience that you deserve. I don't understand why we tolerate these puppy mills in our field anyway. Are we the only field that has these type of classes to get our certs. Emt boot camps are not the underlying problem but medic mills are. You just get the basics in a boot camp if you ask me. Even the military boot camp is called Basic training. -
actually your boss is a moron and has a personal problem.

you would do your patients a great service if you required this from your members when they are hired on or accepted into the volunteer service. so many newbies or even veterans don't know their "stuff" and having a skills test would be one way to validate that patient care will be the best it can be. a good preceptorship program can also go a long way.

indy and st louis both have fares to vegas on southwest airlines for less than 125 each way. So if cost is an issue check these websites www.kayak.com www.southwest.com www.orbitz.com

ABC News says we are ambulance drivers.
Just Plain Ruff replied to jobberman's topic in General EMS Discussion
Its a matter of pride, not just title. I worked dang hard to get my medic and being referred to as a EMT is not what I expect to be referred to. Just as a nurse works hard to get her RN she isn't going to be happy being compared to an LPN, of which both are referred to as nurses. But the RN isn't going to be happy when someone says Oh, you are a lpn then. You are right as to the cardiologist title versus the proctologist but you can bet my next paycheck if you compared a chiropractor versus a dentist versus a MD or DO. YOu can bet that that MD would bend over backwards to educate you that they are NOT a chiropractor even though Chiropractors have the same title as MD's they are all doctors. Plus, let's look at police officers Police are police officers as it goes but if you say Hey officer come over here and it's a captain I can be you will get an education as to what their title is. Same with sergeants. finally I point to the military- they are all soldiers right. What happens if you call a colonel or a major hey private come over here. Remember they are all soldiers under all the titles but you can bet that they will give you a fair education as to what they actually are. So titles are very very important. I could go on and on but I don't have time to do it but you get my point right? -
I don't believe ya!!! just kidding sounds like a wild ride down the tubes to v-fib-ville.

I am putting out a call for presenters at the First annual EMT City meetup being held in Sunny LAS VEGAS. If you can help in this effort please let me know. I cannot offer any stipend or cash payment but I will try to make it worth your while. If someone can also put me in touch or help me get this event approved for CEU's from their state or if your service can help me out on getting ceu's approved I'd be much obliged. Preferably someone from Nevada in a education capacity. If you can help, please pm me and we can chat more. Thanks

ok, I'll put in my bid for Vegas also. It's a cheaper flight for most people anyway I need a date now. Plus, I'm going to need some firm commitments on who's coming and who isn't because reserving a meeting hall or banquet room is not cheap in vegas and I'm not going to plop down a chunk of change that I won't get back and then be in the hole for the rest of the money if those who say they will show up end up backing out. So I'm going to have to do some pricing of venues and then I'll put a package together of the costs. I have done something like this before in the past and I was left holding over 700 bucks of no-shows so probably I'll need the entire amount up front to pay for it. I'll look and see at what some of the prices are and get back to all of ya.

boy did she get defensive. What gets me is that she has only one school's experience and she's telling us that Dust is wrong. She's also saying most of us are wrong but then again because she's in da class that put's out some really qualified people then we are all wrong. Keep that ego honey, it will serve you to be able to keep your head up when you are pointed to the door. She sure is spunky though. I'm glad she put dust in his place. I've known dust for a while and I haven't been able to do that.

lth can someone who is not currently registered attend or assist with the practicals? I don't think they can but I have no basis for that thought.

yes, you can counter the effects of Rain X by using Rain Y or for stubborn addictions you can use Rain409 and that will cure you
-
plus you have to put it on on a regular schedule because once it has outlived it's usefulness it begins to be very hard to see out of due to the streaking. If it's put on correctly and often then it's a good thing.

dust with the amount of frequent flyer miles I have I have no issue with going to this and also flying to your wedding. I just don't have an invitation from you yet.

Congrats, well done. The stress is off at least a little. Now it's time to get even more stressed, you are now going to be on your own with patients albeit after a short orientation period.

I'll volunteer to set this up in KC MO. I have the perfect place to have the gathering. I also have the perfect food for this - KC Barbeque The hotel we'd use is about a 5 minute walk from the place we'd have it. Total cost shouldn't be too high. If we can get consensus on the date and that KC MO is the place to have it at I'll set it up and get a price for everyone. Let me know as a matter of fact I'll set up a new thread with a poll. Please answer the poll

Scene safery first...always?
Just Plain Ruff replied to DwayneEMTP's topic in General EMS Discussion
No scene is ever completely safe. Remember that. Scene safety has to be a mantra for you and it must be heeded. Yes you can go in a scene that is unsafe but cleared by PD and still have it turn into a crap fest. If you feel that you can get in and then get out without suffering injury or harm then you have to live with the consequences good or bad of what actually happens. Do you have the fortitude to not enter a unsafe scene and have the patient die while waiting for you. Consider a school shooting. You hear gun shots at one end of the school but there are kids at the other end who are injured. Do you go in? A stabbing at a local bar - like Dwayne had, you see the angry mob. You have no idea where the assailant is. Do you go in? A domestic violence call where the husband is still there along with his wife who he smacked around. Is this scene considered safe? A Scene most of us don't consider unsafe - a mvc on a highway. you have a fire truck blocking the road and your ambulance in front of the truck. The two lanes of a three lane highway are closed by police. Is that scene completely safe? These are just a few of the examples of scenes that are unsafe or safe to a point. Go with your gut, if it feels unsafe and you are leery then don't go in. If you feel it is safe and that you have an egress point then use best judgement. I recommend to always have a way out. NEVER go into a scene and put the victim between you and the door. Always have someone watching the scene and surroundings. Bad things happen and come out of no-where so you need to be ever vigilent. If you get put in a unsafe situation and survive it, then it's time to be reviewing your attitude and making that situation a learning experience of what not to do next time. -
You told me you took care of those warrants. I'll get em taken care of for ya. Now I wonder if the judge is still taking my calls.

been there done that. It's not easy but you do the best you can.

Worst Patient Care Errors
Just Plain Ruff replied to captainstandup's topic in General EMS Discussion
yeah I agree We brought my grandfather in to the ER for an infection. He was one step away from hospice and gave the nurses his DNR. The nurse walked away and didn't even listen to the rest of the story. She came back and I asked why she walked away and she said that "He's a DNR" I blew a gasket and didn't even go to her supervisor. I went directly to the Director of Nursing. I also came back to the ER and when she walked back in to continue to take care of my grandfather I had already prepped my Grandma and I told the nurse I wanted a new nurse. someone with a more caring attitude. She said that she was who we got. I told her unacceptable. She walked out again right into the loving arms of her Director of Nursing and the nurse manager. We got a new nurse and we got a letter of apology from the hospital. It's inexcusable for a nurse or healthcare provider to be so nonchalant. My grandfather needed care, the DNR said no resus not NO treatment. In the end he succumbed to his illness about 8 weeks later but I was able to say goodbye and he died in the hospice facility where he was kept comfortable and cared for very well. -
March or early april. Spring is Kansas city's best weather of the year. I will set it up for kansas city if I get enough people to commit to coming.
