  1. This was discussed one time before. Is this still something people would be interested in? have it somewhere in the middle of the US like in KC MO of St. Louis on a weekend?
  2. It's simple inconsistent background checks. a single call to the organization or governmental agency that licenses nurses would have solved this. Plus, the computer technology we have these days can make copies of anything.
  3. OK I have to address something. Why do medics and emts get so bent out of shape transporting a patient with a DNR. DNR does not me do not treat or it would be called a DNT You treat the patient and not the DNR. If the patient has a DNR they have made specific directions to not be coded but a DNR does not have any place in specifying out treatment requests. For that you get a living will or a power of Attorney for Healthcare. DNR means NO CODE not NO TREAT We need to get our terminology straightened out or we just look like idiots.
  4. but only Vivi can really tell us what he really looks like exposed.
  5. Just what kind of drugs are they testing you on? Hopefully it's only the good ones.
  6. Dtrick, I understand your pain but like others said, you are off base. I know we've discussed this over and over and over, and there is no horse left alive that want's to be dragged into this but look at from our point of view. You are making 28000 per year as an Emt in your town. Your service now begins to accept volunteers to offset some staffing problems. Your service has 3 or 4 people who consistently volunteer every week so now your service decides "hey, we have these 4 people volunteering nearly full time so let's offer them a permanent shift" so now you have 4 volunteers staffing 4 full time shifts. They are doing what you are doing for a paycheck for free. Your service now says, well let's put on a emt class and offer free classes for those who will volunteer for us. Do you see where this is going, the volunteers now are taking shifts away from full timers and the service now sees that they can get volunteers for free and your job is a whisper away from being taken over by and volunteer. If you have people doing something for free then you have a deficit of shifts for paid staff. I'll go back to the argument that To preface the next couple of statements - the vast majority of the following do not volunteer. You don't see doctors volunteering their time. They are billing their time. Nurses don't work for free - they don't volunteer to pick up shifts in the local small hospital. Trash collectors, actors, boxers, soccer players, professional sports athletes, veterinarians, and any other profession do not consistently volunteer their time. The only profession(if you can call it a profession right now) that volunteers their time is EMS and Fire. Even pastors don't volunteer their time and they are in a giving field also. Dtrick, I understand that you are upset about the vollie versus paid argument but ranting and raving about it will do no good. I'm glad you feel that volunteering your time is a good investment but consider this. $10.00 per hour times an 8 or 12 hour shift = 120 per shift. Multiply that by however many shifts you work and you can see how a ambulance service would love you. If you do this consistently they save BIG bucks. Plus they do not have to pay benefits or unemployment if they let you go. It's a win for the service and a losing proposition for you.
  7. dang, that's right. I had a feeling it wasn't third watch but couldnt remember the series name. thanks richard.
  8. Actually Cap, no offense intended but maybe you should have taken your own advice that you gave wendy regarding your response to the turd watch episode. Again no offense intended at all.
  9. Cap you cannot bring Guido, Al, Bubba and Dan to florida with you to get the collection rate higher. If you hired Tony and Christopher for collection maybe they could help but you would have to dissavow any knowledge of them though. your collection efforts would have to be legal you know.
  10. yeah turd watch It was that episode that kept me from watching it.
  11. P3 I get the picture now and I can see why you didn't report it. Please don't think I was taking you to task for not reporting it. As a new guy and a new student it is overwhelming to begin to work in the field and then have this happen on your first day. Wow not what I'd want to happen. I think that the learning experience for you that day was "what I don't want to happen to me" thing. If it was several years down the road then that's a different story. LIke I said, this thread is a tremendous learning opportunity for all of us. Let's keep this coming.
  12. Vent, actually my wife was a cna at the hospital we both worked at and then she went on to get her lpn. What I meant by the cave man comment is that if you do a 2 week class on CNA then a cave man can do the job. Now if you put the CNA thru a 4 week or longer course then I'd agree that you need a higher caliber of person for the job but whatever. I'm just talking here and ranting. I rarely complain about the level of care at the nursing homes, I've known a lot of people who work at nursing homes and they are very committed to their patients. A lot of time these residents become like a 2nd family to the cna and nursing staff. It's not surprising that some of the most contented people in the health care field are CNA's as they get to know their residents better than even the lpn's or nurses do. I have always found that if I can find the CNA who is taking care of Mr. Johnson and ask them questions I will usually get a clearer picture from them of what is happening than from the RN who is responsible not only for Mr. Johnson but also 98 or 100 other mr johnsons. I have respect for the CNA field but there are bad cna's as well as bad emt's and medics. It's a universal problem. But I do get frustrated at the care in nursing homes because I know that that care can be done better but with the resources of what the nursing home has I understand. Heck, I can also complain about current care in EMS because I know what the constraints apply to EMS agencies out there. We all do the best we can with the resources we have. It's our job to do that.
  13. ok my theologian friend sent me this text. The hebrew word for hell is Sheol. Here is what he sent me the Hebrew word for hell is sheol. The Lexicon I use (http://www.studylight.org/lex/) tells us the following about sheol. It appears in 66 places in the OT and has the following meanings. sheol, underworld, grave, hell, pit the underworld Sheol - the OT designation for the abode of the dead place of no return without praise of God wicked sent there for punishment righteous not abandoned to it of the place of exile (fig) of extreme degradation in sin Translated Words KJV (65) - grave, 31; hell, 31; pit, 3; NAS (66) - Sheol, 66; Verse Count for the word Sheol KJV NAS Genesis 4 Numbers 2 Deuteronomy 1 1 Samuel 1 2 Samuel 1 1 Kings 2 Job 8 Psalm 15 Proverbs 9 Ecclesiastes 1 Song of Solomon 1 Isaiah 9 Ezekiel 5 Hosea 1 Amos 1 Jonah 1 Habakkuk 1 Genesis 4 Numbers 2 Deuteronomy 1 1 Samuel 1 2 Samuel 1 1 Kings 2 Job 8 Psalm 15 Proverbs 9 Ecclesiastes 1 Song of Solomon 1 Isaiah 10 Ezekiel 5 Hosea 1 Amos 1 Jonah 1 Habakkuk 1 You can do the same for the 3 Greek words in the NT (hades, geenna, tartaroo). Hope this helps I hope that this info helps this discussion. If not I'm open to further discussion.
  14. yeah you can get trained in nursing homes for cna's just like you can get trained in the fire station for EMT. 2 weeks for cna, not a bad payoff if you consider the comparison of pay to education. Plus, no offense to the cna's of the world but even a cave man can do it. I can't seem to remember the last rocket scientist I met who was a CNA.
  15. so true so true but I didn't want to continue it and clog up the threads. But ok DBS, what do you consider the original bible? Do you consider the original bible the king james version or do you consider the original bible the hebrew and greek? If you consider the original bible the king james version then that was as close to translation as could be done at the time. Subsequent translations such as the NIV, the NAS and many many others did their best to translate directly from the greek and hebrew texts. If you consider that the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were written within 60 years of Jesus's life and they were written by eyewitnesses of Jesus and his deeds you cannot make the argument that Hell and Heaven was not in the original texts. There are over 24000 pieces, parts and full texts of the books of the bible. These pieces are consistently consistent meaning that they all say nearly exactly the same thing if compared. Heaven and Hell are in those pieces. Consider other well known books such as The Illiad - there are approximately 640 original copies of this book and they vary from one another. some have small variations and others have huge variations. A well known book by Thucicidys(apology for spelling) there are 400 known original versions. Same goes for variations here. A book about Ceaser's conquests - 800 original copies - variations also And several other very very well known books written in 60A.C.E. and one in 200A.C.E have less than 8 original copies. So if we have over 24000 original copies of the books of the bible and they differ in the miniscule amounts and are consistently consistent and most of them if they reference mark or luke or john or matthew they have the word Hell in them. So no, I don't believe that the word or concept of Hell was something that the church put in there. I just don't believe it. I also don't believe that the concept of heaven is a church added concept because it is just too common in the bible as well as the original hebrew and greek texts. I'm still gathering info and if anyone wants me to continue this discussion I will gladly do so.
  16. ok here's another got dispatched to a local dirtbag hotel. Call was for a earache. When we got there the woman who was living in single room hotel room also had 4 children living with her. She decided that since she had an earache that she would have her 4 kids transported too for evaluation of a infected toenail on one, a spot on another's back and lice on the third and 4th kid. Needless to say the fleabag hotel was 2 blocks from the hospital. You could see the hospital from where our ambulance sat. I told her that her insurance would not cover the transport because it was not a emergency. she told me this "I already have a 3500 dollar bill from your service and a 10 thousand dollar outstanding bill from the hospital so I don't really care if I owe you more money. It's not like I have the money to pay for this anyway" or something to that effect. I then replied "Well how can you argue with that logic" and I got a complaint for being rude to her. Go figure.
  17. p3medic, did you do cpr on this patient? If so how did you document that the life pack cable was not plugged in and you were working a code on a monitor that wasn't plugged in? Or did you guy just cover it over and go on your merry way. I'm not criticising you but I'm curious as to how you guys addressed this error? This thread is a great thread, and thanks Cap for starting it. I think that along with pointing out what errors we've done or what errors we've seen happen, how we address them or take responsibility for them is key here. For the potassium chloride example that I posted, the hospital (yes it was where I worked but not me who was going to give the KCL) changed their processes so only pharmacy could mix up a iv with KCL in it. Take out the middle man and your problem is basically solved. The drug company put on the metal band near the medication draw out port the words "MUST BE DILUTED" on them. The drug company also recommended to all pharmacies that this medication should only be diluted by a licensed pharmacist. We need to learn from our mistakes, we need to take responsibility for our mistakes and own up to them. If you cover them up it makes you negligent and in my opinion a danger to patients out there. If you cover up a mistake, what else are you covering up. I made a drug error myself a long time ago that still haunts me. I had a ecclamptic patient(sic) who went into grand mal seizures. I had standing orders for Valium 5mg as needed for seizures. Well she seized and I grabbed out of the narc box a syringe of morphine rather than valium. I gave 5mg's morphine to thiis patient. Soon after her seizure stopped and we arrived at the hospital . shortly after cleaning up the truck my partner came to me and said "why did you give morphine to her" and I said i did not. He showed me the syringe. I about passed out. I was not concerned about the patient but I was terribly concerned for the baby. I went in the ER, found the doctor taking care of her and told him what happened. His answer to me was "No wonder why her pupils are pinpoint" and then he proceeded to talk me thru this. He could see that I was very worried and he assured me that nothing happened to the baby. I then called our supervisor and relayed the issue to them and had to write up several incident reports on this as well as a incident report regarding why they would be short on their narc count morphine. The doctor called the quality control person at our EMS service and commended me on coming to him so quickly and taking responsibility for the error because I could have covered it up but did not. Did I get some remedial training? yes Did we change our drug narc boxes and processes Yes - they put large labels on the sealed narc vials so even if we grab the wrong medication we can see the name of the medication on the seal. Positive changes happen from mistakes but only if we address those mistakes. I've always said, Actions have consequences, it's how you want to deal with those consequences.
  18. no no deals on yard work but my jesus had a fixation on time and it was guaranteed I knew the right time when I was done with him. It's amazing what 5 mg's of haldol will do.
  19. Let's not make this a religious discussion. I'll pm you some info that I feel states my case. We can discuss this further via pm's.
  20. ok dBS I'm gonna have to consult my theologian friends. You are making me work to prove you wrong. No offense ok. I'm just wanting to prove it to myself.
  21. jp I beat you on that one. I transported Jesus and he proceeded to absolve me of all my sins.
  22. Wendy, not to pick on you because there are others here that have been just as offended with other commercials (me included) but I think that the public knows the difference between a commercial for a tax prep service and a public service announcement. I think we have bigger things to worry about before we get all bent out of shape over a commercial. I have seen the commercial and I have no problems with it.
  23. i know of two cases 1. a nurse in a town(vague) gave sux to a patient in x-ray and then walked out. Don't know if it's just an rural legend but you get the idea. 2. I know of a medic who nearly gave potassium iv push.
  24. In the new testament there are 16 references to hell. Do you want the list of references? Before you say it's not in the bible you might want to read the bible for yourself.
  25. just to prove what a bunch of nut jobs are at PETA The founder, not sure what her name is but she has it in her will that when she dies she want's to be skinned and have handbags made out of her skin. Talk about creepy.
