  1. Over my dead body will my son be going to public schools. It's private schools for him. We have the school already picked out if he were to go to a private school. We are still kicking around the idea of homeschooling.
  2. Let's not start this please.
  3. If you can get in a service as an EMT that run's 911 calls and you can attend some calls then yeah you can wait and get some experience but if you consider the experience gained from working for a transfer service where you transfer bessie from the ER to the nursing home or lucy from home to dialysis and back then that's just a waste of time. The only time I'd advocate that you get experience as an EMT is if you are working for a high volume ems system that allows EMT's to attend patients in a bls role. Yes there are some services like that. But I know that I wasted 1 and a half year on getting that elusive experience and I had to break myself of some bad habits I got into during that time. You are not going to lose anything if you go right to paramedic school and you have much to gain. Don't daudle. You get 1 year of ems experience under your belt, so what, you have to relearn your assessment skills and the like during paramedic school so why spend extra time in your life learning one way to do things and then having to relearn it when you go to medic school. It's just a waste of time if you ask me.
  4. I was reading an article the other day and it was on the force feeding of the movie Inconvenient Truth to kids in school. One student said that they have watched it in every classroom he's in. He's seen it 7 times already this year. He said and I quote from the article (source forthcoming) that "I don't want to die from Global Warming" My friend is a child mental health worker and he has 2 kids right now that are dealing with significant stress because they think that the oceans are going to overflow due to global warming. One of the kids have seen the movie 4 times this year in class. One of the classes is his music class. He's 9 years old.
  5. I would register for your medic class the MINUTE you find out you passed your emt.
  6. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA  :sign5:
  7. Scar, you just proved my point.
  8. Those MUGS remind me of the car that Tony gave Samantha for her first car at 16. All the reflecters and bright yellow. If you need a reference to the above I must be too old for you. Or I just watched too much tv.
  9. *** Disclaimer - I'm about to make some people on this forum uncomfortable and probably angry - NO OFFENSE Is intended**** ***Disclaimer - this might make the women here mad, so I apologize ahead of time**** i agree spenac, I have worked with scores of women medics and emt's and I found that I would do a disproportionate amount of the lifting on a large percentage of the calls. Not saying that all women partners cannot keep up with the weights and stuff but I can count on both hands the number of partners (female) that have been able to lift amounts comparable to what I can lift. I expect from my partners the ability to do the job to my level of expectation and I expect that they want the same from me. If they cannot lift the same amount then I will be doing a disproportionate amount of the work therefore subjecting my back to greater stressors and possibly a greater chance of getting injured. I know my limitations and I call for help if needed. I expect the same from a partner too. The other thing that gets me is short medics or emt's. I've had partners who could barely see over the head of the cot. Lifting with them was like lifting the entire load my self. Some of them were really strong (these are men and women) but being that short they never really got the needed leverage to get the cot all the way up at times. Again, I felt like I was shouldering the weight of most of the lifting. I'm all for anyone trying to succeed in this profession but there has to be some level of standards that if you cannot consistently lift a patient or a cot without additional assistance then maybe you do not need to be doing what you are doing. I know I'll catch hell for those statements but that's my opinion. Feel free to prove me wrong. I've expressed my concern to some of my partners and have been proven wrong by a couple but have been proven right by almost all the rest. I'm not in the business to do the brunt of the work as that can lead to career ending injuries which some of my friends have had happen to them in exactly the same situation as what I described above.
  10. no the answer to the manhole cover is this they are round because a square manhole cover will not fit a round manhole hole. If the manhole hole was a square then the manhole cover would be square cause it would be stupid to try to use a circle manhole cover. You gotta think outside the box on that type of question.
  11. Brent, I assure you that she is a female. I will send you a picture of her if you want, but I'll only send it to you. Then you can confirm or deny that she's a woman.
  12. Captain don't make a blanket statement like that. I've been in EMS for 15 years(semi retired now) and I've seen some really really good ones and some really really really really really badddddddddddddddddddddd ones. For every good one there may be 100 bad ones. For instance, the nursing home that my grandmother is in is pretty good. One other thing that I do take exception to, if the facility has 100 employees, I can bet your next paycheck(I won't bet mine, because it would put you into the next higher tax bracket) that there are several good employees who really care about the residents.
  13. and by the way, She's HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. I still don't buy the fact that it's justifiable to get a unit back in service so you run lights and sirens to the hospital. no jury or court in the land is going to side with the ambulance service that goes with that thought process. You run hot due to needing to get back in service, you go thru a red, you broadside a family on holiday. Two family members are killed and your original patient is now a critical patient, as well as you and your partner are patients. The ONLY defense you and your service can muster up is "we needed to get the patient to the hospital to get back in service." The plaintiff's attorney says "You ran the red light and killed my clients children just to get back in service" Jury comes back and gives a clear message to you and your service that just to get a unit back in service is not a reason to run hot so the family gets a cool 10 million or whatever award they ask for. All because your service didn't have enough units to begin with. So back to the wreck. Now you have one entire crew who is out of service, you have a patient who now might be critical depending on what kind of damage is done to the ambulance and you have injured people in the car. Now your service has to scrounge around for mutual aid to get the help to you that you have caused. Instead of needing one unit back in service you are going to need at least 2 if not 3 or 4 additional ambulances at the scene you caused becuase your service put the public and you at risk to get a unit available. Sorry guys, I don't buy it.
  15. There is only one reason that a teacher should be answering their cell phone. Emergency call from their family. No other time. My son's football coach, stephanie, was coaching last saturday and every 2-3 minutes she checked her cell phone and would answer text messages fully interrupting the coaching. She sort of just stopped coaching and concentrated on the text message. I told her that she needed to put her phone away and coach and she apologized but went right back to texting when she thought I didn't see her. I took her aside and said "Stephanie, apparantly your texting is more important than my son's practice time so Liam and I will be leaving and I'll be calling the Parks and Recreation department notifying them of what you were doing" I told Liam we were leaving and we walked away. I made that call and got two phone calls later that day. One from the director of parks and rec and one from Stephanie with apologies. I told them that it was unacceptable behaviour and that we paid 60 bucks for this class(flag football) and I wanted a refund based on the class that was ruined. I've yet to see the money. It will be interesting to see how Stephanie coaches this Saturday.
  16. come on Dust, you are a lean mean fighting machine that doesn't get to sleep. You have to be on duty at all times ready to respond to every little nick and scratch that comes your way. Was it only 12 hours?
  17. Dust, I'm disappointed in you. It took you 4 pages and about 4 days to get into this conversation. You are slacking off in your days of being head over heels in love.
  18. Captain I can understand the need to run hot for all the things you mentioned except one thing. Getting a unit back in service. that just doesn't compute in my head. running l&S with it's intrinsic risks to public, patient and responders just to get a unit back in service runs counterproductive in my head. Can someone explain this to me?

  20. what makes you think I don't have it written down and awaiting publication. one thing would be that it's not waiting publication but I have much of it written down. I keep a journal, been keeping it much longer than blogs have been around.
  21. i had one I relayed on a different thread where a cna was doing compressions on a patient and after each one the patient would STOP THAT HURTS or another more colorful word. the reason for cpr, couldn't find a radial pulse. Here's your sign
