Behold, my badass combat pack!
Just Plain Ruff replied to Dustdevil's topic in Tactical & Military Medicine
cool oh and by the way, stay safe. -
Asys, remember that 1500 dollar laptop I was referring to? That was the sedation that Richard Reid needed, give me the sedation drugs, if it was my laptop I'd need the sedation in order to tell my boss what happened to his precious laptop.

I hit the high number. To think, we have a farmhouse that growing up we saw and had at least everyone of those items at one time or the other. I'm on 38 but my grandparents never threw anything out. If it worked they kept it. Anyone remember the original corvair??? I have one of those sitting on blocks in a garage on my farm house. Taking offers.

Hey Dust, wheres my sand? -
nah, but if you get a second bag of peanuts and the entire can then it does. Its my understanding that airlines no longer give out renumeration for helping on flights. That went away with 09/11 I think.

I was told by a captain on a plane that I sat next to, he was on his way to his next flight in Detroit, and he told me about helping in the cabin. As long as you accept nothing of monetary value like free flights or extra frequent flier points then you are not considered employed by the airline. If you do accept anything then you basically become an employee of the airline and the good samaritan protection is GONE

Take it from someone who has rendered aid on a flight. Most recently about a year ago on a lady who ended up coding in the ambulance when we got her off the plane. You are covered by the good samaritan act and you can even point out that you are a paramedic. some airlines have advances packs in their kits which include an iv and some code drugs such as epi, atropine the like. They all have agreements with a medical facilty to provide on line medical control. I started an iv on this lady and talked to the online physician based out of I believe pakistan(ha ha ha just joking). We landed the plane and got her to the ambulance. So, yes you can render aid without being subject to the rigamoroles of going past the good samaritan act. What really surprises me is that if you are the only rescuer on the plane and someone is coding or in severe medical crisis that you would not help that person. It's one thing that when you are on the ground driving that you can just drive around the wreck but you are in a plane at 35K feet and they ask for a medical personnel and you are there, yet you refuse to help the person. I just don't get it.

AMR and Piners vote to strike in northern California
Just Plain Ruff replied to hugopreuss's topic in General EMS Discussion
Wowiee I agree with your premise but I think that you are wrong on one count. You say that you will not be punished in any way if you walk or strike. Don't be too sure. Who is telling you this? Unfortunately the possiblity of not so subtle punishment is always there. If you are considered a troublemaker or striker I'd be a little worried about retribution no matter how small. We tried to organize a union at AMR in Independence MO a number of years ago and the orgainzers were singled out a little bit at time and none of them were employed by AMR after 6 months. Good luck and I'm glad you have a back up plan. I do think that 25 meetings with management is not a high number but it is 25 meetings. Thats equates roughly out to about 2 meetings a month. If you guys couldn't get through your differences in 25 meetings then I'm worried for you guys. Good luck and keep your chin up. It will all wokr out in the end. Take care. -
This is a good idea but I think that the emergency personnel are gonna have to get in line behind me and my other fellow passengers. You see I fly every week, monday morning and then coming home thursday night. I talk to my fellow passengers and not one of them has expressed any doubts about taking a terrorist out even if it meant killing themselves. I think the sky's are safer than they were before 9/11 as I have flown about 500K miles since 09/11 and I've seen people taken off planes for making stupid statements, saying they have a bomb and what not. There's not many people who would not hesitate to gang up on a terrorist and take them out, they all remember what the consequences were when they were not taken out. If I see some dipshit mixing some type of liquid together then that 1400 dollar laptop I got from work will be a 1400 battering ram or club and I'll take the guy out, and then take lumps for it later. someone tries to storm the cockpit then I'm there leading the charge and disarming or taking him out, Air marshall or not.

Soldier, also welcome to the city and do not forget that this in only one ambulance service or area you are working in. It's prevalent all over so no matter where you go there you are. To get into this for good reasons is fine and now that you know how some of us medics act you can take the steps to prevent or keep you from becoming like them. Good luck, get your experience as an EMT and then go on to Medic. You sound like a pretty good egg.

If we are going to complain about a video game why don't we focus our efforts of Grand Theft Auto. It is my understanding that they have as a big part of the game killing people and killin cops. If we're gonna get so worked up on the WTC game here then why aren't we saying anything about GTA? Heck for that matter, any game that kills things should be held in the same regard as this one. Plus, let's see, does anyone remember the people who died not in the trade center tragedy but the ones who died in NYC who waited on an ambulance or were killed in traffic accidents or just died of natural causes on that day. Yes it was a terrorist act against our country and we should never forget that it happened but it happened and people other than those in the towers died in NYC also. We don't think about those people. We have to have better things to complain about than this game. These games and stuff on ebaums world would not become popular if people didn't point them out. the guy's a moron for putting this stuff out there but he does have that right. We also have the ultimate right not to go there and look.

AEDs in personal vehicles?
Just Plain Ruff replied to Quint7Paramedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
couldn't you put a retainer or securing device like what is on the ambulances I used to run that the o2 bottle slipped into. It could be similar to the way water bottles are secured on bicycles. -

Spock, you last post intrigued me. You have a full intubation kit yet you don't carry oxygen? Sounds Illogical!!!!!!!!!!!! -
sounds like a horror story or a suspense film.

yes, every emergency vehicle should have one. In your personal vehicle only if you can afford it. But if you have one in your car then that's great. -
Holy crapola batman. I bet he was pissed.

AMR and Piners vote to strike in northern California
Just Plain Ruff replied to hugopreuss's topic in General EMS Discussion
But if they do strike it would be a very bad thing for the people who they take care of. It would be a prime time for a competetor to come in and take over with the State's blessing. I've seen in happen in a number of areas. -
AEDs in personal vehicles?
Just Plain Ruff replied to Quint7Paramedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
Yeah, 15 years or so in EMS and seen an AED only 1 time in use but then again, I've worked rural so we never really had any that were in use. I see them in airports on a weekly basis cause I fly every monday and thursday and yet to see one used there either. I fly 100K miles per year and have never seen one used on a plane either. They are a useful item but many times they just become a paperweight waiting to be used. -

Sickbxy, you are totally correct in that there has to be more to the story than just posted in the OP. As for the CEO of AMR getting so much money, that's the nature of the beast. You pay people what the market will pay and if this guy gets all this money then that is what the market pays. He's not one of the top 500 paid exec's if I remember though. Just look at the guy from Exxon Mobile - I believe his pay was the most of any out there. We can bash the exec's all over the place but AMR chooses to pay it's highest execs that much then that is what they will do. almost impossible to change that. Besides, it's always the front line guys/gals who get the least amount. Look at any fast food restaurant - front line workers about 7 per hour. CEO of McDonalds - millions It's a vicious circle and will never be equitable -

Nate you are preachin to the choir to me my friend. a 10-19 percent pay raise. What the heck, I'm happy with a 4% increase. 19% is just cake. Where did having to earn it go in all this. A blanket 19% pay raise. Sheesh where do I sign up -
AMR and Piners vote to strike in northern California
Just Plain Ruff replied to hugopreuss's topic in General EMS Discussion
Actually I believe that they could be charged with abandonment if they strike but I'm not sure about that. I agree with you on that. There is no reason why you deny the citizens any form of emergency care. I remember the KC FD strike of the 70's, it was horrible. the police were fighting fires. Several businesses were total losses due to the refusal of the FD to respond. There was a strike in Oakland where the nurses went on strike. One of their demands which was the sticking point was lifetime job protection (ha ha ha what a crock or crap) But the personal note aside on my original post about getting all you can, DO NOT let them get everything they can at the expense of the publics safety, that's just not kosher. I also know firsthand about AMR coming in to a service and taking over, everyone will have to prove themselves to AMR and no job is guaranteed. Just something to think about. Just until this is over, avoid these two communities like the plague until a more stable form of EMS is in place. -
Ok, I'll go one that I saw happen to a partner of mine about 8 years ago. My partner was deathly afraid of spiders and another co-worker knew this. One day the other co-worker found three large wolf spiders and caught them. After the spiders had died, he placed them in individual manilla envelopes and sent them to the one who was afraid of the spiders. He sent them on 3 consecutive days and marked the envelopes with HR, Operations management and Scheduling Well to tell you that he screamed when he opened the first letter you could have heard the scream about 10 blocks away. Day 2 came and he opened the 2nd envelope and a similar scream came out. Day 3 the sender of the spiders was on duty at the same station as we were and my partner got the last envelope. I left the room and came back and my partner was asking the sender of the spiders to open the envelope. Well the guy did open it and told him oh it's just papers. He handed the letter back to my partner who opened the envelope and proceeded to jump out of his skin. That was about 8 years ago, I think the guy is still afraid to open a letter from management thinking there might be a spider instead of official paperwork.
