AEDs in personal vehicles?
Just Plain Ruff replied to Quint7Paramedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
Congrats on your first save ITX Way to go As for AEDs in personal vehicles, it depends in my opinion on the area you are covering. As for Island Medic, where exactly do you practice. Sounds like a good area. Drop me a PM sometime. -
AMR and Piners vote to strike in northern California
Just Plain Ruff replied to hugopreuss's topic in General EMS Discussion
hmmm no offense but I think getting a 10-19 percent pay increase would be a good thing. I wish I got that amount in my check but I don't have a union behind me. I hope they get everything they are asking for, and this is sincerely coming from an Ex-AMR employee -
Unfortunately sometimes you just cannot avoid getting hurt. But for those of you who have bad drivers in your rig, I found one thing that usually cured them of their hapless and irresponsible driving. What I used to do to every new driver I had, I would put them in back on the cot and show them the gentle way of driving and then show them the un-gentle way. I also had them act like they were taking care of a patient in the back and I would drive them.(you have to be careful on this one, dont' want to hurt the new guy you know). They realized that driving a couple miles an hour slower or braking less forceful usually was the wa they wanted to drive.

Here is what was written However, I think any self-respecting police officer would laugh in your humorless face if you called because somebody messed with your sirens while the rig is shut off. Go out and purchase your sense of humor back from the pawn shop. You'll make a perfect anal-retentive killjoy administrator. I may have taken it the wrong way but saying I'll make a perfect anal-retentive killjoy administrator ranks to me a insult but hey I guess others have a different take on things. But it's all water under the bridge, I've talked with Uglymedic via pm and I think that we're all right. But if not that's another bridge to cross. I said in a clarification post that the company policy was to contact LEO when anyone other than another crew from my service messed with the ambulance. If it was another crew from my service we just knew not to do that to our units. That is what was required of any of our crews. As for anal retentive administrator - I've worked with a few and they are not fun to work with. I have tried never to become one and if I came off as a holier than thou here then I apologize. Take that however you want to. You all be safe and take care. I hope this smooths things over with a couple of people. I still don't think that there is any place for pranks in the workplace no matter how harmless because we all say how we want to be viewed as professionals and people who see us doing pranks wonder how mature we are. That is my stance and I'm sticking to it. This is the last time I post on this thread unless other posts direct them to me. Take care and be safe.

Ugly medic, nice insult there towards me. anal rententive ha ha ha Well everyone let me set the record straight, my company policy was to call Law enforcement if anyone tampered with our units. We had several very bad experiences with people tampering our units in a pranksterish way. I no where advocated to fire anyone for pranks but if they got out of hand and it hurt someone like it did me at one time then you bet your arse that you would be fired. no if's ands or buts. Pranks have a place in the workplace but we are supposed to be professional and people pulling pranks that can hurt people or hurt themselves should not be allowed. If you pulled a prank on a crewmember and it resulted in an injury of a crew member then you could expect a suspension or even termination.

EMT-Is and the death penalty...
Just Plain Ruff replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
Thanks all, but what I wonder is what would have happened if I had walked her into her apartment? Could I have stopped what was going to happen or would I have been another victim? I shudder to think about it. But the Big guy apparantly didn't have any paramedic angel openings at that time I guess. -
Hey Lithium, here's a thought. This nurse apologized and tried to make amends. Why don't you invite her on a ride along so she gets first hand exposure to what you guys do. Who knows, you might just make her an RN/Medic. It sounds like this could be a good experience for you and for her. The beginnings of a beautiful friendship.

EMT-Is and the death penalty...

Scarmedic, that I agree with, but, wouldn't training these guys to kill other inmates be opening them to danger from the general population of inmates? -

EMT-Is and the death penalty...
Just Plain Ruff replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
I have no idea where this dirt bag is right now but he did go thru a lot of appeals. I never had to testify which was a blessing. This was a little over 19 years ago. -
This all goes down to the professionalism and tremendous level of trust by the public towards EMS. If we start to allow felons to hold professional licenses what is the Lay public supposed to think. We operate in a tremendous level of trust by patients. They let us in their homes, which are supposed to be their most secure areas of their world, we take care of them when they are most vulnerable and most subject to be taken advantage of. If the lay public knew that we were letting convicted felons get licenses then the public begins to question whether or not they want EMS to be in their homes. It just goes to the level of trust that the public puts in us. If they believe a person who was convicted of a crime might be on the ambulance it may cause them to delay calling 911 or just go to the hospital on thier own when they could have gotten help sooner. The argument of a convicted felon taking care of me and my not caring about it if he helped me is a good one but I don't really want to take that chance. Keep the felons away from professional certification/licensure.

EMT-Is and the death penalty...
Just Plain Ruff replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
Well let's hear it from someone on this site who's girlfriend in college was raped and then murdered in her apartment 15 minutes after I had left. The assailant was caught running from the apartment with her blood on him. He was convicted of 1st degree murder and sentenced to die. Did I forgive him? NOPE Do I hate him for what he did? YEP you bet your ass I do. Would I start the IV and push the drugs, probably at the time, due to the emotional nature of the situation. would I now - NO way. There is no way that any paramedic out there or EMT or Nurse should be administering the lethal cocktail to these people. It just goes away from all what we are taught - the original rule FIRST DO NO HARM You really cannot allow medics to be doing the execution and still follow that Ethical Rule. My opinion only of course. -
HEY ACE!!!!!!!!!!!! YO MAMMA But to get back to the thread, the info posted by Ace is spot on. Great research.

AMR taking over small company.
Just Plain Ruff replied to redbkirk2001's topic in General EMS Discussion
Move this to another topic area. Tactical EMS is not the right topic area. What I can say is good luck and AMR isn't really a bad company to work for. -
Not to beat a dead horse but at least in the state of Missouri a convicted felon cannot hold a professional license.

Windsong, you know you've worked to many hours when it takes like 5 minutes to realize that those websites can be said two different ways. Boy do I feel dense but those are funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NREMT-Basic I don't see anyone here blasting you. You are not there to do excessive scut work but you are there to help out the nurses and do things for them that you might disagree with, like get coffee and deliver letters and what not. Excessive scut work is not something that should happen but I agree with the above poster. A limited amount of scut work or "grunt work" is really expected. It was expected of me 16 years ago and it was expected of the students that i taught. It was probably more expected of the medic and emt students prior to my day. If you do a limited amount of grunt work I can almost guarantee that you will be making the nurses job a little easier and more than likely you will get to do the more interesting things, like intubate and give lots of drugs, assist with Sutures, work a code. You'll get to do that anyway but it might come faster if you scratch their backs. How can you say you are not there to make the nurses lives easier, starting an iv, giving a med, changing linens and cleaning vomit off a patient, how can you say that by doing those items you are not making the nurse life easier. She gets more paperwork done, takes care of more patients and in the end you get a happy nurse who is more likely to give you better assignments on subsequent shifts.
-
TX I love that attitude. It's a great one to have. I understand becuase when I was in my first clinical or two I also was relegated to the "Grunt work" yet I did it cause I knew I had to. I proved myself to the nurses and they proved to me that they would let me do more and more fun stuff. It just took a shift or two. If you can show them you are willing to do the grunt stuff then they are more willing to show you good stuff. Imagine, changing sheets, cleaning up patients and the like makes a nurses day and it lets them get their paperwork done faster and then they can go home faster. It's a win win situation Keep up the great attitude and you will do wonderful.

This list is quite sobering in the fact that it shows just HOW UNSAFE we are at accident scenes. http://www.lionvillefire.org/hwy_safety/Hi...y_1997-2002.pdf

Here we go again. performing skills is important but the so called "grunt work" as you put it is also part of the deal. Not to be harsh but you have to NIP that "I don't do grunt work" attitude in the bud. Every medic here did grunt work in their clinicals and most if not all had to prove themselves to the nurses before they got to do any of the cool stuff. I know of many medics who didn't get to do a lot of challenging skills because they had that attitude. I know of a lot of medics also who were able to do many many things becuase they proved themselves and a part of that is doing the "Grunt work". When nurses see you are willing to get dirty and do the work that they do everyday such as change linens and clean up "poop" then they will gradually bring you into the good stuff. The nurse who changed the rules should be re-educated and told what medics can and cannot do but unfortunately you are at their hospital and they make the rules and it is also not your place to do the reeducating. I can tell you that you are going to have to do grunt work at your job as a medic such as Cleaning the truck, changing linens and cleaning the station house. So, go to clinicals, do what they ask of you and I am sure that you will prove to them that you know more than just the basics and you will soon be starting IV's and stuff before you know it. **** On a side note - have you brought this up to your instructor and made him/her aware of these new restrictions or are you just here venting? **** on another side note, I have had hundreds of students precept and learn under me and the ones who got to do the exciting and fun things were the ones who helped make my day easier. And YES, you are there to make the nurses Jobs easier.

EMT-Is and the death penalty...

Yes I agree, I cannot believe that the State of Missouri Bureau of EMS would ever sign off on this. They are the ones who make the rules. -

EMT-Is and the death penalty...
Just Plain Ruff replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
Shedding a tear "but they are people too" But seriously, even though they did stuff that would curl many peoples toes I still don't think it's the business for EMT's and Paramedics to be killing people, yes you can sugar coat it but you are basically killing a person in the states name. There is no way that a EMT or paramedic should be doing this, plain and simple. -
well in order to get the scientific basis and studies Ace will cut and paste even if you ask him not to - (just kidding Ace)
