What happens in the truck, stays in the truck?
firedoc5 replied to fireflymedic's topic in Education and Training
I can only repeat what the others have said. Wendy was right on. Don't try to hide it. Report it. We had a "plan" that if that happened who would be alerted to it. There was a chain of command if you will. Certain hospital officials and management of your agency would be involved. I know that sounds like a lot, but it has to be done. Check with your resource hospital for their policies, and your agency's too. There might be an inquiry, or someone may just take care of it themselves. With us it would definitely be a right up on your permanent record, possible suspension for a week or two and a "probationary" period. But believe me, I've seen others come back from worse. Best thing is, just don't make that mistake. -
I thought about AAA but thought, naw, couldn't be. But good for you. Good thinking of the IV site. Her legs must have been better than I thought at her age.

physician leaves temporary tattoo on patient
firedoc5 replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in Archives
I can't remember if it was an actual incident or a joke, but, wasn't there a law suit about a doctor putting smiley faces on a guy's knee caps in surgery and he wasn't having surgery on his knees? The doc was going to wipe them off but forgot, or something. That just sort of sticks out in my mind. -
OUTSTANDING! Party on!! Have fun.

The one thing that bothers me is that these two Reverends haven't been exactly preaching. When was that last time you heard either one of them say, "JESUS is the answer to all our problems"? I don't believe that I have, ever. They only "talk" about Civil Rights and social problems. When was the last time either one actually preached a sermon on salvation? I'll stop for now.

This is the Dept. I was a voluteer at. I really miss those guys, and gals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ JFPD honored on Capitol Hill for 60 years of service By KANDACE MCCOY kandace.mccoy@register-news.com MT. VERNON —Jefferson Fire Protection District not only celebrated its 60th anniversary in May, but was recognized in Congress last week by Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19). Shimkus entered a statement into permanent Congressional Record of the United States House of Representatives on July 10. Jefferson Fire Protection District Chief Mike Huntman said the fire department was honored by the recognition. “I think it’s nice for Congressman Shimkus to announce on the floor that we are celebrating our 60th year,” Huntman said. “We don’t expect it, but when we receive a recognition like this, it’s extremely nice.” “Madam Speaker, I rise today to mark the 60th anniversary of the Jefferson Fire Protection District in Southern Illinois,” Shimkus read to Congress. “From a humble beginning, with a 5 1/2-square-mile district and a tanker that was a converted Army truck from World War II, to today’s department with modern equipment covering 220 square miles, the Jefferson Fire Protection District has been keeping residents of Jefferson County, Illinois, safe for 60 years. “It is because of dedicated citizens, willing to put themselves into harm’s way to help another in need, that our Nation is the great place that it is. Every time the department has responded to a house fire, an auto accident, a medical crisis or any of the myriad of other emergencies that they have been called upon to face, these brave public servants have reminded us of what it means to be a hero. “I want to congratulate the members of the Jefferson Fire Protection District, past and present, on reaching this milestone. I also want to thank them for the vital public service they render to local residents.” Huntman said the department has seen many changes since its incorporation in May 1948. “We’ve come quite a ways in 60 years — from one station to four stations,” he said, “and now our total area covered is 220 square miles with a little over 11,000 residents served.” The JFPD has 19 pieces of equipment, which includes engine, tankers, grass trucks, rescue trucks, utility trucks and chief’s truck. The department has four paid employees —Huntman and three captains — as well as 40 volunteers. Earlier this year, volunteer firefighter Darrell True retired from the district after 31 years of service. Lt. Ernie Collins is now the most experienced volunteer with the district, having served with Jefferson Fire since 1969. First response is important to the members of Jefferson Fire Protection District anytime they respond to a call, whether it’s a fire, emergency medical services or accident call, among others. “Our goal is to help the public the best we can,” Huntman said in a previous interview. Huntman has been with the district since 1980 and was hired full time in 1984 before becoming chief with the district in 1995. Jefferson Fire Protection District was first located on 17th Street in the King City and moved to its current location at 1600 S. 10th St. on Feb. 16, 1965. It has three substations, located at Ina, Dix and Opdyke.

Welcome to the world of EMS. Whether you get a job at an ER or not you need to at least run part time or get involved with a volunteer ambulance serv. What you learn in class and the ER, and experience in the field can go hand in hand if you are wanting a well rounded EMS education. One guy I use to teach with said to listen in class and learn in the field. But I think you need to listen and learn in the class and learn and listen in the field. You'll do fine.

Getting a head start on Algonquin College

That's pretty much how we started. One thing to focus on is bones, land marks, skin, etc. When you start with organs (remember, skin is the largest), name and placement, and that is also when physiology will really start in. Every function and the systems of the organs. Have fun... KEWL to have you around. -
Use to be these fires took care of unhealthy parts of the forests, i.e. dead brush, over growth, etc. It was sort of like natural selection. But now with the population growing in so many of these areas they are just getting in the way of what nature has always done. Like it was stated earlier, if you build there, expect these things. If people want to protect their property they need to remove all that would be burned naturally themselves. It's a lot of hard work to do so. But they can't be complacent about and let it build up and accumulate. I myself would rather fight a structure fire than a grass/woods/forest fire any day.

AZCEP wasn't calling you out, he was just pointing out an error for your benefit and others that might not have caught it. When dealing with professionals you have to expect that.

We had a practical joker in our midst. He'd done a few real doozies, but nothing like hazing. He never demeaned anyone or put them in an embarrassing, unprofessional situation. It's right to say hazing has no place in EMS or the Fire Service. If someone thinks they are being "funny" or just "outrageous" or doing something for kicks & giggles, they need to grow up. Besides, there are 20,000 comedians out of work, so don't try and take their gig.

I just have problems with people constantly talking on cell phones in public in general. You can't go anywhere without having someone that just has to carry on a conversation no matter what they are doing. And if someone is talking and having to multi-task, and not doing a very good job of it, is what really get's to me. I use to leave the house to get away from the phone, so I'm not all that thrilled to carry one everywhere I go, so sometimes I don't. And people driving and talking on a phone that isn't using a hands-free device, that sometimes just infuriates me. How many times have we had accidents and the driver explained they were messing with the radio or CD/Tape/ 8-track, whatever? Now they are trying to do the same thing with those distractions along with fumbling with a phone. OK, jumping off my little box.

YOU, THE VIOLENT PSYCH, AND THE RESTRAINTS.......
firedoc5 replied to letmesleep's topic in Education and Training
I rarely start out a lesson with "Back in the day..." Most of the time I am comparing to what is taught today with how it use to be. I don't teach that any given way is better than another. Given the scenario of being able to now use a Hurst Tool to extricate someone instead of using two tow trucks is great. But what if the Hurst Tool goes down or one not available? Would you know how to extricate someone with two tow trucks? This is only an example. That's why I like to teach what is current and what has been done in the past. The more ways you learn to skin a kat, the better. -
A friend of mine had a scare with that. Come to find out the tech had got some dates wrong and the baby was a little farther along than they thought. Everything came out fine. It's amazing what they can do prenatal now. I'll be thinking of y'all. Let us know how things go.

YOU, THE VIOLENT PSYCH, AND THE RESTRAINTS.......

I'm not here to discuss things as "point-counterpoint" with anyone. CB, are you always so "by the book"? What if a situation came up, not necessarily one that you have to restrain someone, but you just could think of what to do next and a veteran Medic is there and remembers that, "Hey I've had this happen before and we did such an such'. Are you going to look in your book and it's not there, are you going to say, "Nope can't do it, it's not in the standard of care. Haven't you ever heard of having to improvise? What about coming up with a new idea and trying it? Listen to us "old timers". Not only do we have the education, but the experiences that anyone can fall back on when need be. And don't be so ludicrous and asking about something like rotating tourniquets. It is immature. When you do that you are insulting those who have helped you in getting to where you are today. Who do you think writes and advises the books that you study so hard to be able to do what you do? Us "Old Schoolers" with 20+ years of service. And I'm not meaning this for just CBEMT. We all have something to contribute. Let's all be civil and professional. I'm sorry that I've got this personal which I rarely do and try not to do. -
Sounds like you have done all you can do, just keep doing it and transport. I doubt you carry Demerol to be used IM. With permission you could do MS IM, but I'm not sure how your resource hospital works.

It is very important to have your IV before NTG. ASA is probably the only drug I would give before having an IV established, but would still prefer it. If the pt. is having chest pain only and no raspatory distress then go ahead and do a 12 Lead, but if they do have SOB then by all means put on O2 ASAP. If I remember right I was told by a cardiologist that ASA does not have an analgesic effect on the cardiac muscles directly. But acting as a blood thinner and helping the heart to work with a little less stress can diminish the pain, especially if an MI is occurring at that time. I might have someone correct me on that, but that was my understanding from the doc at an ACLS Instructor's seminar. Be very aware of allergies and asthma. I'm allergic myself and so I can imagine how it could compromise someone having an MI.
