  3. This is my old department. I had just gone by there to say HI to a few of the guys the day before. Maybe I'm a jinx. The time I had gone by there before one of the rookies rolled a ladder truck. Two dead after early morning house fire By TESA CULLI and KANDACE McCOY Register-News MT. VERNON — Two people died in an early morning fire Thursday, with the victims identified as 32-year-old Sarah Rollinson and 35-year-old Vernon Lee “Juggy” Cutt Jr. According to Mt. Vernon Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent, an autopsy has confirmed that both died as the result of smoke inhalation caused by the fire. Sargent said the fire was reported at 4:42 a.m. Thursday, and when firefighters arrived on scene at 4:47 a.m., they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Initial reports indicated that adults and children were still inside the home. “Firefighters attempted an interior attack when they arrived but were forced out due to the heat and flames,” Sargent said. It was determined that the children who were reported as being in the home were safe, with two of them at their father’s home, one with a grandparent and a fourth, a relative, going home with his parents Wednesday night. “When we located the children, we switched recovery efforts to investigation efforts,” Sargent said. The home, located at 6 Parker Lane, is owned by Kendrick Vaughn, and it has not been determined how long Rollinson and Cutt had lived at the residence. The MVFD responded to the blaze with 12 units and 16 firefighters. In addition, Litton Ambulance and chaplains from the county were called in to assist. Sargent said the initial call of the fire was made by a neighbor who was awakened by an electrical outage. When she looked out the windows of her home, she saw the flames coming out of the residence and made the emergency call. One victim was located just outside the bedroom and the other just inside the bedroom doorway, Sargent said. The Illinois state fire marshal is continuing the investigation into the cause of the fire, although the fire investigation is centering on the basement area of the home, Sargent reported. Two firefighters went to the hospital in the early moments of the fire — one with a back injury, who has been treated and released, and the second with heat exhaustion, who is still being treated at the hospital, Sargent reported. Sargent said it took about two hours to bring the fire under control and another 30 to 40 minutes to attack hot spots remaining. “Any time you have a fatality, all the guys feel the effects of it,” Sargent said. “... Today they were unable to save lives, and it’s hitting them hard. ... We all express our deepest sympathy to the families.”
  4. Perhaps a sledge hammer?
  5. I believe rupture may be a more accurate term. I know in grade school playing softball a pitcher was nailed by a line drive and it was said that he had a ruptured testicle. I saw it happen and believe me, it made my butt pucker. And still does when I think about it. I saw the news clip of the catcher catching it, or I guess not catching it. I wondered if he was wearing a cup or not. If he was and still sustained that kind of injury, just think of how it could have been if he wasn't.
  6. I didn't think that an itty-bitty broken arm would stop Dust. Figured he'd be typing with his toes. Get well, man. Welcome to my world.
  7. Responded to MVA very late at night, rainy and cold. Upon arrival car is upright but obviously had rolled. Driver was ejected an laying under the car. Luckily it was a very muddy field. 18 yr. old female, only left arm free from under the vehicle. She was submerged in mud of at least 18 inches. Volley Fire doing a good job of digging mud, but eventually needed three porta-powers to lift car. Luckily fire/ rescue had lumber for trench rescue. Myself and one other literally had to go under car to free her. Placed on back board, c-collar, full immobilized. When placed in ambulance and started assessment, complaint of chest pain, headache, felt burning pain of left thigh area but went away. Started pt. on 12 L O2 per NRM and managed c-spine control. Starting to remove clothing she seemed hesitant. Luckily had two others with me, one gal. Removed shirt and cut bra. Never mind the foam rubber that flew. (That's why she was hesitant). Bruising noted under left breast, possibly from underwire in the bra. Removed pants. Very large indented burn to left thigh, evidently from muffler laying on her. Very little bleeding from burn. Could not feel left leg or foot. Good pedal pulses bilaterally. Good lung sounds. Chest pain increases with deep inhalation. While enroute starts to complain of mid- thoracic back pain. Not sure if from spinal imobilization, but rather be safe than sorry. BP: 120/88 Pulse: 120 Monitor showed sinus tach, no ectopy. Respiration varied 20-32. Some sternal pain but described as chest wall pain. IV NS TKO, did increase enroute due to burn. Dry burn dressings to left thigh burn. Several small lacerations widespread, light bleeding. Started to shiver with possibly start of hypothermia. What else? Bueler? Bueler?
  8. IDIOT!!?? I think not. Keep up the good work. I agree with the aspiration and possible anaphylaxis treatments. Did I miss something at first, but how long was it that she had the cinnamon prior to breathing problems or was it immediate? With the anaphylaxis there is the possibility of epiglottitis. If so, her breathing could deteriorate quickly. Watch carefully enroute. Not necessarily her chest.
  9. I'm in the same boat with long list of meds and longer list of allergies. I usually do have a bracelet that says "See Wallet". They do include a card for you to fill out, but it isn't too durable and for me not enough space. I'll sometimes just put my own list in my wallet. I don't know about other states, but I think in IL they should have something on your driver's license like they do for donor option and your blood type. That reminds me, I need to get a new bracelet. Hate the necklace.
  10. I was going to say that you must keep busy. Maybe you need to break up with these guys and just see Willy Draggin.
  11. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "Beeer" Is it true that an Irishman thinks more clearly after a couple of pints? I'm Scott/ Irish. But haven't worn the kilt yet. Like in the past few elections, I think it's sort of like voting for the lesser of the evils. Not to start a political debate, but I think McCain is the likely choice, IMHO.
  12. Thought I'd steal the appreciation thread and run with it and include all of Mel's movies. "It's good to be the King."

  15. In the past I've had DHE45 (I guess the same as DHE mentioned). It didn't' help the pain but it did help my eye sight to come back. I know a lot swear by Toroidal, but what about those of us who can't have it? Or any kind of Nsaid? Talk about sicker than a dog with no pain control. Retching vomiting, stomach cramps, etc. I'm usually limited to Demerol and Visteral. Some docs don't like it but...

    George Carlin

Saw where George is going to receive the Mark Twain Award for American Humor. It's the highest award for any humorist. They say it was already decided before he passed away and that he hadn't been informed of it yet. Too bad he won't be here to receive it.
  21. Had someone steal a portable radio. After a couple of days we thought the battery would have been dead, but the idiot was trying to use it like a CB. We had one of our gals get on and made a date with him. Busted him at the city park.

  23. Believe me, I'd sure been nervous, even scared. Only 28 weeks out of 45? Under three pounds? Did he even think of possible respitory distress? I know they had no option of where the baby was born, but there were a lot of potential problems. He must not have thought of that. I'm just thrilled that everything did work out OK. Bless them all.
  24. See if you can find out what your problem areas were and study again, emphasizing on those problem areas. You probably know it anyway, it just didn't get down to your hand. Good luck on your re-test. Don't worry, it's happened to the best of us.
  25. I forgot to mention Diphenhydromine (Benadryl). Along with Epi. and breathing tx. of doc's choice will usually get them through.
