BC PARAMEDICS NEED YOUR HELP
crotchitymedic1986 replied to Ambulance Al's topic in General EMS Discussion
You mentioned that the medics are paid substantially less than firefighters and constables, but you didnt mention what your average pay rates and scheduled hours of work are. I have never understood the logic of any of the public safety wings thinking that everyone who has a siren in their vehicle should be paid the same thing, as they are vastly different jobs with different dangers and skill sets. Could you please educate us to: Your average pay rate for EMT's and medics. The average hours worked per week. Are the EMS paid Overtime for everything over 40 hours/week ? If so, are the constables and firefighters paid OT for everything over 40 hours per week ? It is possible that the discrepancy in hourly rate is solely due to the overtime that is built in, thus making the EMS hourly rate much lower than the other two, while the annual salaries may be very close in range. -
An oldie, but a goodie: EMT Randy Rescue has not been scoring with the ladies, so he goes to the local brothel to purchase the services of a prostitute. The madam meets him at the door and asks what type of pleasure he is seeking. Randy says, "I'm just a poor EMT, so I dont have alot of money, I will take whatever women that I can afford". Madam asks how much money he is willing to spend, and Randy answers I only have $30.00. The madam says all you can get in this house for $30.00 is 15 minutes with Sandpaper Sally. He says, beggers cant be choosers, sandpaper sally will be just fine. Amazingly, when he gets to sandpaper sally's room, he finds her to be very attractive. Sandpaper Sally helps him get undressed, then she lays him down on the bed, straddles him, and begins the sex act. Randy rescue screams out in pain. "I know why they call you sandpaper sally, you are killing me, i have never been inside a woman whose kitty was so rough". Sandpaper Sally apologizes, gets up, and goes to the bathroom. A few minutes later she returns, climbs back on top of him and asks, "Does this feel any better ?" Randy says yes, that is way better, what did you do ? Sandpaper Sally replies, I just went in the bathroom and pulled all the scabs off. Anyone got one that is more gross than that ?

I doubt letters from us will change a politician's mind. If you want change, tell your medics to quit working overtime shifts or second jobs for one month. When ambulances can not be staffed, the pay will increase, but as long as your medics are willing to work for that wage, the employers will continue to offer that wage. It is simple supply and demand. -
I wasnt there, but from what I read, the patient became agitated and went to another room to retrieve the weapon. At that point, i would have followed the patient and tackled/restrain him once i knew or thought i knew what his intentions were, or ran like hell. I do not blame these volunteers for not doing that, as it isnt something you expect or are taught in school, its something you pick up with experience.

have someone with some authoriti (as cartman would say) to check out mr. vietnam vet's driver's license. 9 times out of 10, these guys who brag so much were not even old enough to serve in the military, usually the whole thing is made up. -
A gun may be too much. It is sad that someone died, but more people drowned in bathtubs last year, so we do not need to pverreact to an isolated event. But I see no reason why you could not be armed with pepperspray or a tazer. What may even be more ideal is a short "defensive" course where maybe you can get you local PD or martial arts instructor to teach you some "take down" techniques and other defensive moves.

I would keep a resume brief, as suggested, but make a note that states you will bring a copy of certs to the interview, and then do so. Make sure you clean up any internet sites that could embarass you first (myspace, facebook, yahoo personals) -- its a good idea to google your name and see what comes up

Do we diagnose, rule in/out, or just load and go.
crotchitymedic1986 replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
Its all about semantics and turf protection. The docs dont want you stealing their thunder, but EMS is no different. For instance: An EMTI can place an EOA/EGTA/Combitube in a patient's throat, therefore they are controlling the airway. Obviously with a combitube you have the chance to actually blindly intubate the patient. But if any EMTI came into this room and started bragging about the "intubation" he did last night, the medics in this room would be on him like white on rice. -

Getting back to the original question, I say all of the above. I hope you have a diagnosis in mind before you start shoving tubes, needles, and medicines into patients, but with that being said, we can not make a true diagnosis on many patients due to our inability to do labs and xrays. I hope that you do take the time to perform the proper treatment, and that you transport to the most appropriate facility. With that being said, sometimes we are a glorified taxi service. Every job has some aspect that makes the job less than perfect, otherwise they wouldnt have to pay us to show up every day. Like I have said many times, most people dont become police officers to direct traffic in the rain, but that is part of the job. Part of our job, like it or not, is responding to, and sometimes transporting low acuity calls. And as i have also said many times, be careful what you wish for, because if the only people who called 911 were people experiencing true emergencies, your call volume would drop about 90% overnight, and you would be out of work. -

jump in, the water's fine ............. many will attempt to neuter you, dont let that stop you. -
dont worry what the others think, they will thank you later. But when i was an EMT or a medic on a double medic truck and i wanted to transport someone my medic didnt, i teched the call and did the paperwork.
-
could have been, maybe you will get the opportunity to follow up and find out. Could have been a silent MI, or a whole host of issues that go with diabetes. Your gut will save you and your patients many times over your career.
-
always trust your gut. And dont back down just because a more experienced medic, nurse, or doctor looks at you like you are stupid.
-
whats really sad is the players from the 60's -70s who didnt have the chance to make big money like they do today. They have all of the same injuries, but no money to pay for their healthcare. The NFL should step up and help the old guys.
-
Yes, i think the EMS in washington dc subscribes to that theory.
-
If I remember my history, it seems that Paramedics / EMS first got started in Canada, and then spread in 3 or 4 US cities after the "white paper". Does anyone know who the first paramedic was ? I know Jim Page was the pioneer for Los Angeles paramedics, but i am not sure if he was the first medic ? Who was/is the first one ?

Another idea if you are broke right now: Make a list of 10 dates you will take her own this year -- be creative, do the unusual.
