  1. So you cite 20 cases over an 11 year period, what does that prove ? According to the FBI, the homocide rate in 2007 was just slightly higher than it was in 1950 (with some peaks and valleys in between): http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0873729.html
  2. Another factor is call volume. Most urban services are pushed to the limit daily with their call volume, and most of their calls are low-acuity, so spending an extra 10 minutes on every call to start an INT may not be good for the system as a whole. I am in no way suggesting that not treating a patient that needs it is correct (MI), but at the same time everyone that gets in the ambulance doesnt need an INT and labs drawn. Every drunk doesnt have to have fluid and thiamine via EMS.
  3. Didnt even know who that was. Nina Siemaszko was in Floundering (1994) with Ethan Hawke who was in New York, I Love You (2008) with Kevin Bacon Kevin to Charlie Chaplin
  4. Marilyn Monroe was in Misfits, The (1961) with Eli Wallach who was in New York, I Love You (2008) with Kevin Bacon Easy one if you know kevin: Link Kevin to John Beluschi
  5. why not just hire enough emts and medics ?
  6. I am sure most have heard of this game, it can be fun and challenging. If there is not interest, just let it die a peaceful death. For those who are not familiar, it is suggested that Kevin Bacon (the actor) can be linked to any other actor in history, within 6 moves. Here is an example: Link Kevin Bacon to Andy Griffith: 1. Kevin starred in Apollo 13, which was directed by Ron Howard 2. Ron Howard played Opie in the Andy Griffith Show. 3. Andy Griffith starred as Ron Howards father in the Andy Griffith show. I will start it off: Connect Kevin bacon to Lindsay Lohan.
  7. They pray to the same god and worship from the same book. Just like good old baptists who bomb abortion clinics, you have to address the fringe of your group, or the whole group suffers.
  8. Well the problem is dust, that liberals think with their hearts and not their minds. They can not grasp the concept that you dislike a group for what they do, therefore your dislike is irrational and a fear in their eyes. I have the same problem with Muslims. Until the "good" muslims stand up and confront the "bad" muslims, I will hate them all. Call me whatever you like.
  9. I dont want to air too much of my dirty laundry, but it is probably obvious why I am asking this. To those who have teenagers: have you ever drug-tested your own kid ? If so or if not, what was the fallout ? If you had the situation to do over again, would you respond differently ?
  10. Eric, the point is that the mission of the fire department has changed, and they should equip accordingly. There is no reason to send these gigantic engines, quints, and ladders on EMS calls. A smaller first responder vehicle is what is required. Of course the real arguement is why EMS is not staffed at a level to provide the same response time as Fire ? P.S. I wouldnt work a 400lb arrest on the 3rd floor. Let the coroner extricate the body.
  11. Thats what i am curious about. We know that the normal divorce rate is 50%, so is the EMS rate really any higher than that ? Some people believe we are more apt to have affairs, but my take is that people who have affairs would have had affairs regardless of where they work. Long hours and low pay can obviously strain a marriage, but there are many jobs that pay less or about the same as EMS.
  12. Very good input from all. The reason I posted this scenario is that there is disagreement over whether or not you can be allergic to an antihistamine. Some believe: 1. You can not be allergic. 2. The allergy is to the dye in the liquid benadryl 3. You can be allergic to benadryl. If you google "allergic to benadryl" you will find several internet posts from people who have sufferred some kind of reaction. Obviously, some people are confused as to what an "allergic reaction" is versus a side effect, but the more I read, the more I became convinced that some people could be allergic to Benadryl (with or without dye). So what are your thoughts, can you be allergic ? If so, do you dare give benadryl again if you know the patient took benadryl with a dye in it ? Or do you just go straight to dopamine if the steroids and epi dont work ?
  13. A common theme in this forum is that EMS has a higher divorce rate than other careers. I would like to find out if it is true. So if you are, or have been married, please take a moment to answer the poll. Thanks.
  14. A teenage female sent this to my son, who knows if it is real or not, but it seems plausible: A NEW FORM OF KIDNAPPING> Please take a minute to read this. This is very scary and could happen> to any of us. Seems like every nice thing people do for one> another can> be perverted.> A new twist on kidnapping....... From a very smart survivor:> About a month ago there was a woman standing by the mall entrance> passing out flyers to all the women going in. The woman had written th> flyer herself to tell about an experience she had, so that she might> warn other women.> The previous day, this woman had finished shopping, went out to her> car> and discovered that she had a flat. She got the jack out of the trunk> and began to change the flat. A nice man dressed in business suit and> carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, "I noticed you're> changing a flat tire. Would you like me to take care of it for you?"> The woman was grateful for his offer and accepted his help. They> chatted amiably while the man changed the flat, and then put the flat> tire and the jack in the trunk, shut it and dusted his hands off. The> woman thanked him profusely, and as she was about to get in her> car, the> man told her that he left his car around on the other side of the> mall,> and asked if she would mind giving him a lift to his car. She was a> little surprised and she asked him why his car was on the other> side. He> explained that he had seen an old friend in the mall that he hadn't> seen> for some time and they had a bite to eat and visited for a while> and he> got turned around in the mall and left through the wrong exit, and now> he was running late. The woman hated to tell him "no" because he had> just rescued her from having to change her flat tire all by> herself, but> she felt uneasy. Then she remembered seeing the man put his briefcase> in her trunk before shutting it and before he asked her for a ride to> his car. She told him that she'd be happy to drive him around to his> car, but she just remembered one last thing she needed to buy. She> said> she would only be a few minutes; he could sit down in her car and wait> for her; she would be as quick as she could be. She hurried back into> the mall, and told a security guard what had happened; the guard came> out to her car with her, but the man had left. They opened the trunk,> took out his locked briefcase and took it down to the police station.> The police opened it (ostensibly to look for ID so they could> return it> to the man). What they found was rope, ducttape and knives. When the> police checked her "flat" tire, there was nothing wrong with it;> the air> had simply been let out. It was obvious what the man's intention was,> and obvious that he had carefully thought it out in advance. The woman> was blessed to have escaped harm. How much worse it would have been if> she had children with her and had them wait in the car while the man> fixed the tire, or if she had a baby strapped into a car seat? Or if> she'd gone against her judgment and given him a lift?> I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a> life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was> going to> send this to the ladies only but guys, if you love your mothers,> wives,> sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it on to them, as well.> Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the> world we live in has a lot of crazies in it....better safe than sorry.> PLEASE BE SAFE AND NOT SORRY! JUST A WARNING TO ALWAYS BE ALERT AND> USE> YOUR HEAD!!! Pass this along to every woman you have access to.> Never> let your guard down.> ______________________________________________
  15. Actually the date is 12/21/2012, and there is disagreement about whether or not this was the end of the Mayan calendar. But on this date, alot of weird things are coming together as far as planet alignment and other events. So just like in 1999, all the conspiracy folks have decided this is the next best date for the end of the world. Read the links, its fun.
  16. Really ? run a few more calls then, because I have had several that were. Usually found by someone else after being down for god knows how long. The body can only last so long.
  17. i think doing an unnecessary IO is dramatic, but it could just be me.
  18. Amen, like i said many times, if you want to watch a rookie stain his undies, take his/her pulse ox or glucometer off his/her truck and make him run calls.
  19. Upon further review, could this be WPW ? Is that a delta wave in your very first strip ? Compare to this one : http://www.ecglibrary.com/wpw_as.html Probably reading too much into it, but worth a second look.
  20. Then I guess we need to check obama's head for "6's"
  21. You are called to the home of an 8 year old who has chicken pox. The mom had just administered the child's first dose of Benadryl (liquid, gave the proper dosage). A few minutes later the child was screaming that the itching was worse, she noticed the child's face was swelling and called 911. You arrive to find a 30kg child that is in obvious anaphylactic shock. B/P 50 palp, Sinus Tach at 140, Pulse ox 90% with obvious respiratory distress, externally audible wheezing in both lungs, using accessory muscles. Child is still conscious and breathing, but is lethargic, and has that "I'm fixing to die look". There is no trick here, it is a reaction to the benadryl. How do you treat this patient, with what you have in your drug-box right now. Obviously, some will have more options than others.
  22. Sure you can give D10 to your 300lb unconscious hypoglycemic patient who is circling the drain. Lets see: 1. you have to find your IO needle (pray you remember how to use it). 2. Then you have to find his tuberosity under all that fat. 3. Then you have to clean the site. 4. Then you have to hope the needle is long enough, and you have to place it in the right site. 5. Then you have to spike a bag, hang it, dilute your D50, let it run in over 30 minutes. If he isnt dead bythen, you now have to transport him to get antibiotic therapy for the wound you made in his leg and bone (diabetic sores heal real well). Or you could of stuck an ETT up his ass 20 minutes ago, got your refusal, and been on the way back to the station, while the patient is unglueing his booty hole.
  23. I apologize wendy, i am not use to us being on the same side of an issue --LOL -----
  24. Sorry to call BS on your BS wendy, but paramedics do not have to tech all calls. Maybe your company has a policy about what an EMTI can tech, but there is no law that mandates that a paramedic tech on a "basic call". AGAIN, READ THE ARTICLE, IT COVERS ALL OF THIS.
  25. and if it is abandonment, you are just as guilty -- the patient was in your care also.
