I can not be specific about this interview, as I didnt need to take one. But I do have general interview advice, as I know what I would be looking for if I were interviewing possible medic candidates: 1. Dress and groom yourself appropriately. 2. Be early, not on time. 3. Do not get diarrhea of the mouth. When you talk on and on you tend to screw it up. Give brief, honest answers. 4. Dont lie, everyone can spot a liar through body language now. 5. Dont say anything negative, keep your answers positive. 6. Practice answering the questions you pray they dont ask you. Think of the most difficult question they could ask you. For instance, "tell us about a real call, where you were onscene as an EMT, but wished you were a Paramedic."

Another Ethical Question

so do you consider an EMT or Doctor who uses heroin or cocaine on a regular basis fit for duty ? If you knew a particular surgeon was alcoholic or drug dependent, would you let them do your surgery ? -
Been through all of those, before you go drilling holes in your plexiglass, the best system I saw was sealed "tubs" inside an unsealed cabinet. The tupperware like tubs were probably 12 inches long, by 6 inches wide and about 5 inches deep. They placed items in the tub, had a sticker that had a tub # and the inventory list for the tub, with a seal in both ends. When the seal was broken, you just replaced the tub (from supply room). Took about 20 tubs per ambulance. All tubs were stocked the same, which meant tub #10 in any truck, had the same stock. When you seal the cabinet, you sometimes break or crack the plexiglass, and the crew has to inventory the entire cabinet to figure out what is missing. With this system, you can inventory your softgoods in less than 3 minutes (if all are sealed). It is more costly than sealing cabinets, but more functional, especially if you need crews on-duty and ready to respond quickly. P.S. All of the tubs were clear, so that you could visualize most of the contents without opening a container. If you are a 911 service, you need to start some progressive disciplinary action. Have the supervisor tell them that atleast once-twice per week, he is going to remove a piece of equipment from someone's truck without their knowledge, if they turn in a pencil-whipped checklist without finding the missing equipment, send them home. You should also have an "open supply room" or a mini-supply room that they can access 24/7 so they do not have to steal from other trucks. You can also by paint pens to label equipment with a truck number so that if stolen, it is easibly identifiable.

The Troubles Tree The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stoney silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. After opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward, he walked me to my car. We passed the tree, and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. "Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning, I pick them up again." "Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

Please add your favorite. We are all but recent leaves on the same old tree of life and if this life has adapted itself to new functions and conditions, it uses the same old basic principles over and over again. There is no real difference between the grass and the man who mows it. ~Albert Szent-Györgyi "This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. "A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. "Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on "Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'"

An "OBAMAGASM" ? Oh My God !
crotchitymedic1986 replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in Funny Stuff
I really do not think you can give credit or blame to any president, there is so little that they have control over, it is really the congress and the senate who make the decisions (ever hear of a president's budget that got passed ? Dont know why they even bother). I also remember reading a book a long time ago that was predicting one of the recessions (either 80s or 90s) that no one saw coming. It was by an economist who just looked at the history of the US economy, and noticed the cyclical pattern that allowed him to make the accurate prediction. We seem to cycle from good to bad, regardless of who is in office. But i think barak can be a motivational leader, much like reagan was, and sometimes that is enough. -

Bad driving - Fire these idiots
crotchitymedic1986 replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
We had a safety poster in our station that stated: "Bad weather does not cause accidents....... bad driving does". Snow on the ground means ice on the road, you have to drive slow. As far as the ambulance crew, they were probably driving too fast for conditions, but it may have been their jake-brake. But the guy in the car behind them was driving to fast for conditions, and following too close, no ifs ands or buts. He was lucky there was not kids playing in the snow where he slid off of the road. -
I have never been a doctor, but i played one on TV. Most of my friends who are docs say if they had it do do over again, they wouldnt choose to be a doctor. If you do decide to stay with medical school, either become a Dermatologist or an ER Doc. Dermatologist do not get awaken at 3am for acne, nor do they have to work 14 hour days and "take call". ER Docs do not have the worry of the cost of "office overhead" and reimbursement for their services (most are paid by the hour).

Bad driving - Fire these idiots
crotchitymedic1986 replied to spenac's topic in General EMS Discussion
This accident could be as a result of using the Jake Brake in slippery conditions. There is contradictory information regarding whether or not the use of the jake brake in slippery conditions will cause your vehicle to spin. When you go to the owner's manual, the instructions for driving in slippery conditions are written in a way to suggest that there could be a problem, that they do not want to admit to. http://www.jakebrake.com/products/docs/Operators-manual.pdf -

PM me if you want to talk about it --- -
This is a test that a chinese company uses for preemployment, you have two minutes to solve the problem. Here are the rules in english: There is a single mother with two daughters, and a single father with two sons, and a policeman who has a criminal in custody. You must follow the rules below to get them across a river. The following rules apply: - Everybody has to cross the river. - Only 2 persons on the raft at one time - The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence - The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's presence - The thief (stripe shirt) cannot stay with any family member if the policeman is not there - Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft. Read these directions and then click on the link below: -To start click on the big blue circle on the right (ignore the other two blue buttons). -To move the people click on them. -To move the raft click on the pole on the opposite side of the river. http://www.portalchapeco.com.br/~jackson/river.htm

Memorize this, and your marriage will work alot better: I am sorry dear, here are some flowers, please forgive me (whether you are at fault or not). -
No, that wasnt sarcasm or humor, I am just trying to follow your path all the way out. Good points, I wasnt aware of freedomhouse. But if we did accomplish your plan, whats to keep the services from just pocketing the new revenue, or spending it on ladder trucks ? How can you guarantee it would ever make it to a payraise if we are not united in our demands ? P.S. Nothing pisses me off more than this conversation that I heard over and over again throughout my career: Citizen: Are you an EMT me: Actually I am a Paramedic Citizen: Do you have to go to school for that ?

wow, i thought you guys were being really harsh. Does this happen alot ? Why would you fake someone's death, are they trying to get you to send money to them, whats the scam ? -
Very insightful, thanks. So lets say we make a four year degree mandatory by 2012, how does that then become a "reimbursement issue" that benefits our employers, so that they can pay us more. Most insurance providers do not pay EMS by what is done to the patient, but rather a base fee and mileage. We no longer "itemize" our bills, so doing more stuff is not going to mean more dollars. Or will it ?

I have to admit that i am as pessimistic as anyone, but you know, all journeys start with a single step. This forum has a very vast membership across several states and countries. If we decided to make a go of it, why couldnt we pull it together ? If my suggestion is not the solution that people can rally behind, lets find the one that we can rally behind. Suggestions ......................

I cant say for sure on that one either. I do remember in the early 90s, my employer had raised paramedic pay to something like $34-36k, I was discussing it with another medic in an ER, and was overheard by an RN who was outraged that i was now making more than she was. So nurse pay went up sometime after that. I do not know when RN educational requirements went up, or if they ever did. I know that for some reason RNs with degrees have become more popular in the last 20 years, that could be because of pay, by choice, or because thats what the hospital's want ? Not sure.
-
The educational requirements have increased dramatically since the 70's, and pay has increased as well, but i am not sure there is any cause and effect there. It seems that shortage of employees drove up RN pay, and EMS pay. I think more education is a good thing, but not sure it will drive up pay (I could be wrong). How many services currently pay more for a degree in EMS ?

In a presidential election ? According to this source, US citizens do not have a right to vote, and there are several other "rights" that are not mentioned in the constitution: http://www.usconstitution.net/constnot.html
